The world needs more music and Aloha...Hawaiian ki o alu doesn't get the recognition it deserves ..those who know , know...I sometimes imagine the Dole pineapple driver.

this is nicely taught...this version matches a version taught by Ozzie Kotani at George Kahumoku's slack key guitar camp--a few years back, and that was also the recorded version of Liko Martin and Southern Comfort. But it's always helpful to see a slow, methodical, Zen-like teaching. The only drawback is that the song makes me sad...sad for the changes on the islands, that can ruin a beautiful, simple place. But saving the music and style offer some peace and remembrance. Mahalo.

Enjoy your videos Harry. I first started playing this in G. Then I came across Silver Threads Among the Gold in Drop C with Ledward & Fran, which is similar. Although Drop C is easier to play and pick, I like using the whole fret board in Taro Patch for Waimanalo Blues. Leland "Atta Boy" Issacs Jr taught me how to play this in Taro Patch when I first got interested in slack key while living in Maile. It was the first song I learned in Slack Key.

I live in Sunnyvale, CA. Moved to the mainland in 1979. Retired now, so I can spend more time playing guitar. I'm visiting family in November, so I might check out your Kailua store. BTW, I spotted a tab error: in the 2nd part of the 1st intro (7:00 to 10:00), The C chords in the tab are written with an open 4th string, but your finger is holding down the 2nd fret.

KCCN ....we're the station of Aaaalooohaaaa... Yes Waimanalo blues , "The freedom of Makaha , " and " Waipa'he'e Slippery Slide " Which I later learned were the " Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau" etched in my mind FOREVER ...you would have had to have been there. No place like Hawaii...I wish I could magically teleport there right now.

Mahalo Harry. I'm just going to do the short intro. Have to play this for a free gig in Waimanalo on May 5th. Haha! I've programmed my Roland GR-55 guitar synth for the tuning so I don't have to capo.

Fantastic video. I am learning it already! Would you able to explain in a video how to play "Island style" with the slack key guitar? Thanks
@genuinsanity5 ай бұрын
It's coming slow , but it's coming good. "Green thumb" very clever effective way to remember ! Slack key really captures the Spirit of Hawaii . Open tuning is very easy and forgiving , the catch is keeping the bass line going while picking the melody ...What's that 2 lines ? Before getting overwhelmed those Baroque organ players can keep SIX and maybe EIGHT lines going at the same time ! Not sure about 8 but 6 for sure playing a Bach Fugue ...those guys eat ,think and shit music their whole lives. beyond amazing . Hawaiian slack key chilled compared to that. Still takes practice and dedication . But that should be a relief and encouragement . Malama pono.

Actually everything is easy if you know how. but i know what you mean. "Baby steps" open tuning ia actually very forgiving . BUT DON'T EXPECT TOO MUCH TOO SOON or you will become overwhelmed and quit...thats what I did almost a year ago...but I'm back. Try this: Memorize the 5 chords they super easy except that damn F chord. Then LEARN ONLY ONE VERSE AT A TIME ! Don't move on until you get it ! CONSISTENTCY IS KEY EVERY MORNING when I drink coffee i practice nobody around I SWEAR TO GOD , when you least expect it WHAMMO ! something "clicks " and you are doing it ! Its a rush and doors start open ! I am a klutz with no natural riddum . If you total beginner witl take two weeks for fingers to toughen up. !) consistency EVERYDAY ! 2) one verse at a time or you get overwhelmed 3) open tuning very kind and forgiving to beginner . DON'T EXPECT TOO MUCH ,TOO SOON. Remember bruddah Harry been play fo YEARS I promise this works.
@genuinsanity5 ай бұрын
Also first thing in the morning with coffee really works for me , no distractions and " low impact " great way to ease into the day...then I done my 15 minutes to 30 minutes that's enough I implore CONSISTENCY above all else..once you start connecting phrases it gets FUN and you crave playing Also in evening while watching videos I "noodle " about experiment with different combinations of picking and chord changes while zoning on videos ...gravy on top of morning ...go slow...got walk before you run. This change everything ...i gave up , now make steady progress... DAILY PRACTICE SO IMPORTANT . Make the time. Morning coffee time becomes a GOOD habit.

Nice!!! Didn't know it was actually Nanakuli blues...learned something. Met Mr.. Kane and his wife at his house some years ago with a friend when we were interested in trying to learn slack key. I remember Mr. Kane saying to us,"boys,next time you guys come over,bring a bucket of kfc." Thus,the age old saying,never go to another person's house empty handed. It's funny how my tutu would always tell me the same thing way before I met Mr. Kane. Now I tell my kids that all the time lol
