Having watched this again, there's one detail about the Clockwork Androids I really like. Or an old speaker powering up, I like to think the androids only had so many words available to make sentences with which is why they never explain anything to the doctor "we needed the parts" "she is not ready" all fairly basic words that would be programmed into a repair android "we turned the crew into bio components to keep the ship running" would be alot more complicated

Throughout series 2, the doctor always seemed to imply that he loved Rose, but he didn't seem to care about her at all in this episode. This episode was indeed brilliant thought out, but the whole Madame de Pompadour and the Doctor thing didn't make sense.
@natalieybarra52074 жыл бұрын
thank you! not just series 2, you could see the Doctor falling for Rose in series 1 as well, but yes it was heavily implied... actually it was fact because the writers, David himself along with Christopher Eccelston, all said that the Doctor loved Rose but this episode he easily falls for someone that he only met that day. It cheapens the entire romance he had for Rose.
@deanwicks12783 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I completely agree and that's why I never bought into the whole romance when I first watched the episode. I guess you could argue that with Mickey joining the Tardis, the Doctor felt pushed out and that he couldn't now feel that way about Rose so he tried to turn his attention elsewhere.

I haven't seen the original series, but in most of the modern show he's portrayed as very minimally psychic. However he frequently bumps into humans who are much more psychic than he is. The old lady on the bus who won the lottery every week for example. There's a good chance that Mme, Pompadore was actually just a little bit psychic herself.
@christopherbennett58584 жыл бұрын
It kind of makes some sense when it comes to her life. t the time she lived in, Madame de Pompadour was considered part of a trinity of powerful women in Europe. The other two being Archduchess of Austria Maria Theresa and Russia's Empress, Elizaveta the 2nd who was succeeded by Catherine the Great. In those times, people didn't seek alliance with the King. They went to her. Considering how many royal marriages were due to alliances, the role of the Mistress has been romanticised to being the person the King truly loved and someone who had influence over them.

Also remember that even after making the silly decision to use the fireplace, he still had a way out until he read the letter. But the doctor is smart enough to know that the events only become fixed once he reads the letter. At that point, it's schrodingers letter. It could contain Pompadour's recollections of their travels together. He *still* had the option to go back. But he opened the letter and fixed the events, thereby meaning he can't alter them. But until he read the letter, he was free to simply set the Tadris and zip back again. Nothing the King had said at that point is incongruous with the possibility of further adventures. Its only the contents of the letter that confirm there weren't any. So why did he open the letter rather than at least trying to zip back in the Tardis first? So I guess my question is just *Why?!* One mistake, I can grant. But two like that, right after he's just had his "Oh shit" about the first one? A good ending, but kinda holey due to the rules about their timey whimey space stuff Dr Who has set up, both before this episode and after.
@chancethefapper45282 жыл бұрын
Would have been interesting if he was simply so excited and thoughtless that he accidentally locked himself out of seeing her again (by reading the letter). You can then have it reflect in how he treats Rose (realising he neglected her in this episode and may not always get that chance). It would feel like an early example of the "Time Lord Victorious" arrogance 10 develops and link to the bigger theme of Season 2 being the Doctor's "mistakes" catching up to him. This season's final villains being the Cybermen (who he introduced the idea of parallel worlds to), the Daleks (who escaped him ending the time war) and Torchwood (literally a group founded on correcting the Doctor's mistakes) But that would stretch the runtime so I can see why they wouldnt have included it.

@DoctorWho2002 At this point in the series, Rose is firmly with Mickey, so the Doctor, not wishing to come in between, is moving on. And anyway, I feel Moffat later on pretty much established the Doctor's character as polyamorous (or bigamist, depending on your point of view) considering the whole River Song storyline, being married to multiple people at once, etc. and I don't actually mind it. Seeing how big his hearts are and how old he is, I really don't mind him falling fast and hard for people, even for multiple people at once. I also don't mind another regeneration of the Doctor being asexual. It doesn't bother me. (Provided we get an interesting story with good characters.)

My favourite Doctor, Paul McGann’s 8th, was the most psychologically complex, tortured and troubled Doctor, but he was also the most mystical; he sometimes almost has access to a kind of telepathy, but of course it doesn’t really work ^^ sometimes he just knows things. But he was also often a victim of amnesia, there must have been a trade-off, he was beautiful but perhaps fragile. I suppose that’s why he had to become the War Doctor.

Its the ending the makes it so good in particular, its not often anymore in Who that we get a sad ending which 'could've been avoided'. Rant ahead, sorry: I absolutely hated this episode. Totally didn't make sense within the context of the story arc. We've seen the relationship and chemistry between the Doctor and Rose blossom over the last few episodes. It's clear that he loves Rose, a girl he has a history and special bond with. In the previous episode, he even said _he wouldn't just leave her like that_ . Yet in this episode he suddenly leaves her for a woman he only met a handful of times, (on one day!) without even thinking twice. Once you know Steven Moffat wrote this episode as a 'response' to The Time Traveler's Wife, a book he was apparently obsessed with, you can see this episode for what it is. His attempt to make his own little version of a story he admires, while completely ignoring the character development of the show it was for. He tried to make the Reinette/Doctor relationship just as deep and romantic as the one in his favourite book, but it's impossible to achieve that within one episode, and it feels completely forced to me. Reinette telling the Doctor 'I've known you all my life' rings false. She literally met him twice before as a child, and only for a few minutes. The Doctor being that broken up about her death wasn't believable either. Moffat tried to create the idea that they knew each other really well by including the mindreading part, but it totally feels like cheating. They still barely had any actual experiences and history together. They were still only vague acquaintances at best, and sure, they were super attracted to each other, but that's still not good enough of a reason to choose her over Rose. This whole episode just seems like one of Moffat's typical fantasies/ideas about what romance is: insert an 'intelligent', (I'm not talking about the actual Madame de Pompadour, who was apparently super intelligent, just Moffat's writing) sexy woman with sassy one-liners, write some flirty conversation, and bam, you have yourself a romance. Meanwhile it's a completely surface level, one-dimensional relationship. I wouldn't have minded this episode _as_ much if it appeared somewhere later in the show, with Martha or Donna, but even then, I wouldn't find it believable. PS: Also, Madame de Pompadour was a total bitch to Rose for no reason, she only tried to help. If Moffat meant to make her character likable, it sure didn't work for me.

To be completely fair when it comes to the mind-reading and why she's able to go back into his memories while he is going through hers. The line she says after he lets go of her face is a door can be entered both ways. She was not able to open that or do that without him first opening that door. I mean have you ever found a door that you're able to walk through. That you can't walk back out of? And the fact that he says that he's opening a door to put doors on the memories she doesn't want him going in that would indicate he's just opening a way for both of them to look inside their brains without knowing it.

They needed to be able to control the factor of how old person's brain was that they put into the ship so that the repair would last as long as the ship lasts theoretically. Two they needed someone who could both be impulsive and be able to be so orderly and in control Like a Lady of court. And then being robots they more than likely would have relied on the stories passed around on the ship hypothetically maybe someone talked about her in that time giving them the idea to go find her and use her brain for the ship.

And another note when he breaks the time window he mentions not being able to use the Tardis for a reason. I can't remember the exact reason but perhaps the reason he wasn't able to use it and had to break the time window is the same reason he couldn't use the tardis to go get her. I'm not sure if that would apply because I can't remember the exact piece of dialogue. Anyway I do love your videos keep making more content! ❤The only question that's still bugs me about this episode however is why the Clockwork robots thought that lady pomade was the same the Clockwork robots. Although perhaps they're just referring to her as being close to the edge of the ship thus close to the Clockwork robots age. But it's still a piece of dialogue that's very haunting.😰

This episode has everything. Humor, horror, mystery, drama, tragedy, sci-fi, period piece, sadness, twisty bow tie ending. All compact. Great writing. My fav new Who episode.

In the Fourth Doctor classic serial 'The Image of the Fendahl', if memory serves, I believe it is established that in the presence of a time fissure humans could develop telepathic and precognitive abilities. This would probably be the most likely explained Madame De Pompadours two way link with the Doctor. Also telepathic contact was an established ability of the Time Lords in the classic series, to varying degrees.

Claire Season 1 was when telepathic contact of timelords was revealed back in the 7th story with Susan communicating with the Senoritres

I think the Doctor didn't go in the tardis to visit her because they do establish that having lots of time travel in one place can be dangerous. landing the tardis in a precise point is not that reliable either so there was a change he could bump into himself again, and bring in those bat things from fathers day again.

Mental connections or whatever were a thing in the classic series, but I believe it was only ever shown between Time Lords, and not Time Lord to human (See the Three Doctors)

his grand daughter even gets in on the mind reading thing, but she's given dialogue that shows she doesn't like using it, so yes, all the way back to the first doctor, the time lords have mind reading

Great review, I like this story too, back when Moffat wrote good scripts. Love to here your thoughts on School Reunion where spoiler alert Sarah Jane returns.

You got that right, Moffat was the only one to make sympathetic Rose in Series 2.

He should have used the tardis not the fireplace in the end also why did he think he was stuck all he had to do is remember to go back in time a rescue himself creating a very small time loop where he saves Jeanne gets rescued by himself then past self goes off in his own tardis on the ship with rose and Micky to rescue himself while future Doctor, Rose and Micky takes Jeanne her to see the stars. Possibly she becomes a new companion for a bit as it would have been interesting to see how a famous historical figure reacted to the Doctor's strange world and other planets. All the time, knowing that for time to continue as normal it could only be a temporary thing.

My interpretation of why he didn't go back to get her was more of a psychological one. Pompadour is a pretty famous historical figure, whisking her away might have had consequences and that somber moment probably made him come to his senses. Plus it was a reminder of the mortality of humans and we know how much he hates saying goodbye - he probably didn't want to deal with that again, knowing that her lifespan was even more limited than the humans he has as companions in modern day. He liked her way too much and knew in that moment having her with him would end in disaster.

the tardis is actually less reliable than the fireplace as shown and explicitly stated at multiple points throughout the series. when using it the doctor has very little control over where or when he ends up.

one of the top 5 Doctor Who episodes of all time. When I accidentally chance upon Dr. Who in season 10, and see this total mess of a show that lacks even one redeemable quality, I remember Girl In The Fireplace, and recall that it hasn't always been so.
@mjudec4 жыл бұрын
Why didn't he use the TARDIS? Well....probably some mumbo jumbo about timelines and part of events as per "Rose" but really it's because the emotion of the ending worked. One could imagine that he used the fireplace as was convenient and quick, but then when he arrived after she died he'd created the event where he missed her, so returning in the TARDIS would create a paradox.
@thedude4k Жыл бұрын
I feel like this episode would have hit way harder in season 3 or even 4 because shes kind of another rose it would make so much sense for him to almost fall in love with another girl after rose only to have her snatched away again.
@TheAstip4 жыл бұрын
I never really liked it due to the romantic undertones - probably because I was half obsessed with Tennant and/or 10 and Rose being together.
@j.m.marshall6695 жыл бұрын
He couldn't have used the TARDIS to go back to when he left her choosing a star as when he went back to the 18th Century through the fireplace he became part of events, stuck in the timeline, it's like what he told Rose on the Game Station when she suggested going back to last week and warning them. Sad fact is he was too late, if he went back for her it would have negated the whole reason why he traveled by the TARDIS. Think it's known as a causality loop. Chronomechnanics can be....complicated, so we'll settle with wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff

Why didn't the Doctor fly through the mirror with the Tardis instead of the horse?
