Audits are often carried out by one of the Big Four audit firms. Many of whom can be "bought". Plenty of evidence of that. The whole system is corrupt to the core.

WRT a potential breakdown, it depends what the cause is. When the market broke down in 2008 due to the financial derivatives malfeasance, EVERYTHING went down...even my gold. Have a good garden and a big freezer because you can't eat your gold :+)

There is plenty of supply to meet normal demand for precious metals. Significant increase of prices increase if there is panic buying, otherwise price will trend toward production costs.
