Excellent presentation. Great work. Not many people can present systems like this clearly and concisely with a good demonstration.

Yes, values other than 250 ohms will work as far as enabling HART communication. If you need a precision 1-5 VDC drop for 4-20 mA of signal, however, you'll need the precision 250 ohm resistor. As far as what resistance values are allowed, I'll refer you to the manual for the transmitter. The allowable envelope of resistance values differs depending on the specific model of transmitter (based on its minimum terminal voltage and the loop supply voltage).

@brickboiler Yeah, one of my students decided to add a little "bling" to her Fluke 87.

Does the loop resistance need to be in the power supply circuit?

The voltmeter is connected directly in parallel with the transmitter.

Hello Professor, where are you putting the terminals of your voltimeter in order to measure the millivolt signal that the HART communicator uses to digitally "talk" to the transmitter? (Note: if my question is worded incorrectly, please correct me, thanks)

its seem that the hard needs an AC signal to comunicate, what about if we use an AC power suplly? is it work ??

hi,sir my question is can we use HART with 250 ohm in series to communicate with transmitter..or only parallel combination is required

Can I use a 330 ohm resistor instead of a 250 ohm resistor? Or 220 ohms? 250 ohm is non-standard as you know. I can't get ahold of 250 ohm in time for this commissioning. THANKS!

In real world, where should the loop resistance to be wired? At the DCS cabinet? Thanks.

ok thanks, so without 250ohms resistance the digital AC communication will no work, because the DC voltage will have a low pass filter wherein it will not allow any AC voltage
