I'm sure some people would blame it all on "wokeness" or whatever, but the truth is the proliferation of cable channels and the rule change that allowed ITV regions to bid for franchises solely on how much money they had (as opposed to their creative plans for the region's future) has led to a race to the bottom for British television. As with so much that's shit about this country now, you can blame Thatcher, and her cronyist relationship with Rupert Murdoch.
