The 'BACH-bow' bit refers to Michael (not J.S!) Bach who invented it in 1990. There are earlier experiments with VERY curved bows and some musicologists theorised along these lines for performance of early polyphonic music. But there is little evidence - the hair tension has to be low to follow the curve of the four strigs. Rostropovich experimented with his kind of bow on the cello too.....

Great to see and hear this live performance. Apart from the swapping from a traditional bow to a round bow, also coordinating all 4 fingers synchronously must be a true challenge. Thanx to TheDoctorIgor for uploading this video.

@laketroutdeepdown How could anyone dare laugh at such beauty. I beleive that the viola is so underated while the violin is so overrated, it truly is such a shame no little amount of people don't enjoy the rich and wonderful tone of the viola. I think the violin squeeks while the viola sings!

Reason why I never liked Bach is because of how chords are played on modern violins. Even coming from the best players like Yehudi and Heifetz, they sound like angry wolf crunches. This video is the right way play chords and sounds much better than the modern interpretations

This was the encore for my last public performance and I am prepared to sell the Schweitzer Schroeder curved bow I am using in this video

The bow your teacher is talking about is probably not this kind of bow, they're probably talking about a late 17th early 18th C model bow! They aren't as curved and you hold them further up so the notes naturally taper more

A long time ago I listened to Otto Büchner playing JSB violin sonatas and partitas with a rundbogen, that's the first time I encountered this phenomenon. Being a lover of baroque and baroque instruments, I found it interesting but not appealing. The violin sounded like a 'squeeze-bag ' when all 4 strings were pulled at once. The idea is rooted in the thoughts of Albert Schweitzer that the score should be performed as it is written - taken litterally! - and is very foreign to Baroqueplaying.

it's stupid to not talk about the curved bow in the tags, as it's one rare feature of this interpretation, and i've been willing to see such a bow played on viola for a long time and couldn't find it... For anyone interested, bach.bogen.pagespro-orange.fr is the only bowmaker i know who makes thtat kind of bows.

Wow that's a wierd bow

That this new invention may appeal to players or composers of contemporary music is quite a different thing, but to call it a Bach-bow is a bit far-fetched.

The high valve trumpets (really cornets) are called "Bach Trumpets," (not from the brass instrument company of the name Bach). Natural Trumpets with finger holes (for intonation) are called Baroque Trumpets (but did not exist in the 17th-18th century). Misnomer are common in the music industry. Just saying. On the other hand there exists Paintings, Engravings, etc, of musicians with such an arch of the bow.

Very funny old bow whose principal charm is being able to play 3 and 4 stops... unfortunately dry uninteresting performance

must be the most uncomfortable thing to play

Sorry, I don't like. Sounsd boring. As a violinist, I agree with David Boyden, differently from Scweitzer, that is not possible to sustain (or just play) certainly passages, exactly as originally written by Bach, even with this kind of bow. After Boyden, for example: a finger that is trilling a note cannot play an untrilled note at the same time; two notes cannot be played simultaneously on the same string; nor can they be played simultaneously on two non-adjacent strings; some notes, also, to play in the precise rhythm indicated by Bach, may involve impossible kind of finger scratches... I recommend this lecture.

apart from his bow his whole interpretation is really boring and average imo...
