It pioneered a lot of things that are pretty common and taken for granted in mainstream slice of life anime today but was new at the time. prerendered 3d cg classroom backgrounds imposed with the 2d characters, fully animated dance sequences, rotoscoped fingers (on a specific episode) etc etc. Haruhi is also the reason why we get lots of light novel adaptations nowadays because of how popular this show was at the time.
