Great video Kevin. Takemoto's loss is crushing but his genius will never fade thanks to the amazing productions he touched. Nagato's shift from impregnable wall to all-too-human and ending somewhere in-between is an incredible journey that Disappearance is able to capture (in part thanks to timeline shenanigans) but in particular I've always appreciated how Disappearance's use of Kyon's self-affirmation as a means to affirm Nagato's personhood makes this both of their story. Can't wait for your next project.

Glad you enjoyed it! I've always felt for a very long time that The Disappearance was Kyon's film but was quite baffled as to why they made the mystery seem so 'complex' when it was plainly obvious to us. I really think Yuki is the centre piece of the film, but of course Kyon has the biggest impact.

I *love* the Endless Eight for this reason exactly. The Endless Eight took place over, what, like *five hundred years*? I.....just......it's unfathomable experiencing that. Several times our mortal lifespans just repeating the same two weeks. Over. And over. And over again. And not telling anyone right when they restart, every single time, because your creators won't let you. All Yuki did was edit the last *one year* of that life for one subtle change that made a massive difference - who could blame her?

Yuki didn't glitch. She fell in love. And even though it started from the very beginning... it solidifies during the Endless Eight. I always thought that Yuki NEVER said anything to Kyon of being in a loop not because she is only an observant... but because she really enjoyed Kyon stopping her in her tracks to ask if she is okay or even attempt to pay for her masks. When you look at it like that and then watch the movie; it's heart breaking... but it is masterfully done.

During the part where the SOS Dan falls asleep during the train ride back from sheer exhaustion, Nagato slowly edges herself toward Kyon. Inch by inch during every loop. While the gang reels from the terrifying truth, Nagato is nodding in satisfaction in overcoming her anxiety over the 15,498 chances she's been given 😆

I watched this movie 1st hand, I had no clue about the series. It was a winter night, Rain was pouring and I decided why not watch a 3 hour long movie, about mystery, because that's what it showed on Google review. I always loved to watch long movies so this one was perfect for me. I just read the synopsis of every character in the movie and I just watched it, wrapped in my blanket, shivering, well couldn't relate to the movie anymore. The plot was great, but what was even better was that I saw it in 360p, so it looked way better to me as it complimented the art style and the colour tone of the movie, dry, dull and cold. The movie taught me a big lesson, you will never know the value of a time, until it passes and becomes nostalgia. Ironically, watching anime movies in the late 2019 and early 2020 made me realise I was having the best time of my life, while I was living in it. Good old 2019.

You can watch the Disapperance of Yuki Nagato which is a spin off series of whatif Kyon chose the live in the world Nagato created. It's an okay series with slice of life and romance as its theme but not as fun as the Haruhi Suzumiya series though. Oh and it gets better at around i think ep 10 or 11 where the old yuki sort of manifested inside the new yuki.

I cant believe it took KZbin 3 years to bring this video to me. Regardless, I agree with you. From the very start to the finish. Even the part where you said You didn't find the show as incredible as most others. I'll be frank, for the longest time I wondered how it'd have been if Kyon decided to stay instead. So when the Yuki Spinoff came out I was really happy. Because even though main timeline Yuki couldn't have her wish granted and find peace/happiness, there's a version of her that did.
@michaelkerpan42004 жыл бұрын
I see this not so much as a story about what Yuki wants for herself -- but as a story of her deep friendship (maybe even incipient love) of Kyon. She has developed enough empathy to sense the distress Kyon suffers from Haruhi's antics -- and she sets things up to give Kyon a choice. She does not rig things to ensure she winds up with the outcome she may have preferred. Rather she sets things up to allow (no -- force) Kyon to make a free choice between a Haruhi-centered life and the sort of peaceful life he professes to want (which could possibly allow Yuki to have a more central role). I suspect she knows Kyon will most likely choose Haruhi's world -- but she was willing to risk everything to give him a fair chance to escape it -- if that is what he really wants to do. A remarkable character, really.

As someone whose all-time favorite anime character is Nagato Yuki, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video you just made! I watch this movie at least one time per year, so you can probably tell how important it is to me, which is why it fills me with joy to see people still talking about it in 2020, especially after the tragedy that struck KyoAni last year. Although, I would personally argue, that this movie is as much about Nagato as it is about Kyon. It is their movie and about their journeys as characters throughout the show, something which had been built up on since the very beginning. I often see people criticising the movie for not having Kyon's big monologue moment at the time when he pressed the enter key, as they think it is about his "choice" and therefore believe this big moment in the movie completely misses the point, however they cannot be more wrong imo. I definitely share your opinion that the whole "Kyon's choice" scene (but as you correctly pointed out, it should better be called "Kyon's affirmation") is not about him making a choice, but about him truly admitting the truth to himself which had been present from the start of the movie, but also him truly beginning to recognise and appreciate Nagato Yuki as her own person. Just like him thinking since the beginning of the show, that the world with Haruhi's crazy powers is very exciting and worth living in, he had also known from a very long time that Nagato wasn't what she made herself to be: "A soulless Interface with no desire and personality on her own" however, just like him not acknowledging to enjoy Haruhi's world, he never truly acknowledged Nagato being a person on her own, despite knowing both truths for a very long time. So, his character arc in the movie isn't about him making this choice, like many believe, but about him finally acknowledging and completely admitting the truths which had been present from almost the very start of this series and then actually owning up to his negligence of having failed to do that much earlier, as it had brought Nagato to the point of wanting to change the world. Like I said, Nagato Yuki is the one anime character I love over pretty much everyone else, so I definitely thought a lot about her journey in this movie and what led her to this point and how much the conversation on the rooftop meant to her. I was very happy, when you pointed out how her eyes glistened when Kyon apologised to her, because it is probably one of the most emotional moments in the whole movie for me, even if it only lasted for about 1-2 seconds, because yes, this meant the world to her. It was something she needed for so long and Kyon actually apologising made me appreciate him as a character and his growth much more. As you said, "Kyon's affirmation" was there to lead to the actual scene that delivered the true message of this movie, the rooftop scene. Emotions and empathy, that is what this movie was all about. I apologise for my ramblings to be a bit all over the place. Again, thank you so much for this great video. I had tears in my eyes while watching, so I think you truly managed to capture the essence of this wonderful piece of art, which is still up to this day the piece of media the most important to me since at least 10 years...

Excellent analysis. I agree: “Disappearance“ was Yuki’s story more than anyone else’s. I always thought Yuki’s break was inevitable. One element I’ve never heard mentioned: At the start of the series, she’s got the power and knowledge of a cosmic god, but only three years of experience at being a human-and those in complete isolation. So her entire life at North High has been an exercise in “faking it,” like any adolescent but multiplied immeasurably. Endless 8 gave her more time (centuries) as a human, but even more isolated than before. If not for the ties she had built with the other SOS members, and Kyon in particular, I think she would have simply destroyed everything.
@metronome77994 жыл бұрын
She could've possibly gone that route but I kinda doubt she would've just destroyed everything, that's counter intuitive to her reason for being on earth. I like to think that her programming acts as a sort of "anaesthetic" that keeps her apathetic and following orders, putting a damper on the pain or will to resist. her job is to just observe after all. but it was a mix of the brigade influencing her along with the stress of her job (literal centuries of mundane boringness) that acted as a catalyst to push for her own desires, she's gentle. However if she lacked the connections she made, she probably would've just continued following orders while burying the resentment. she wouldn't see her feelings as important enough to jeopardise her entire mission
@tenhirankei4 жыл бұрын
I love when Kyon has Yuki tell her superior what he'll do if she's removed. Threatening to tell Haruhi about her own power having her do something outlandish to free one of the SOS brigade is scary enough! Maybe she'd reduce the Thought Entity (did I get it right?) to a balloon animal.

I watched this movie for the first time about a week ago. When I finished, I remember telling a friend it should actually be called the Nagato Yuki movie. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the character and I just had to watch the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki spin-off show right after. (Thankfully i like regular old slice of life so I did enjoy that lol) The movie really made me feel for Nagato. In the show previously it hadn’t even occurred to me that Nagato could even feel emotions. But it also makes sense. She was done with all the crap she had to deal with. (Ahem- the Endless Eight...) She wanted to live a quiet happy life in a normal world, as a normal girl. You can’t help but sympathize with that.

It seems like to me this anime has three main messages it is trying to portray, each with its own level of subtly. The first of which is the one you mentioned in this video; empathy. Everyone took Yuki for granted. They saw her as someone they could push their problems onto but also someone who isn't normally worth paying much attention to. It is only until the end when Kyon is able to realize the emotional stress (errors) that she's been building up this entire time due to the 600+ years she was forced both by her master and by her "friends" to be the isolated observer who nobody acknowledges until they need something. While Kyon selfishly chose his desire for the old world over Yuki's closure, he at least was the only one that occasionally recognized throughout the anime that she did indeed seem to harbor some emotions in her eyes, and most importantly the only one who could understand how she feels and therefore decided to let her know how important she really was to him. The second point is simple but once again one that is portrayed subtly. You don't know what you have until you've lost it. From the very beginning of Kyon's adventures with Haruhi he seemed to find it a bother. Kyon always wished that Haruhi, and therefore the world, would just be normal. However when he is granted his wish one of the first things we see is his panic and fear when he realized that Haruhi along with his other friends are either missing or normal humans. It is only until he is presented with the choice between the two worlds that he has to actually perform some self-reflection and comes to realize that sure while Haruhi was usually the cause of his snarky remarks, he still greatly cared for her and the fun world which she created. Finally a message that is often portrayed in anime is that there are certain qualities we have as children and lose when reaching maturity. Perhaps in order for us to live a happier life and one that isnt so boring we should retain some our childhood sense of wonder and desire. Haruhi is practically the embodiment of this (although for her it reaches an unhealthy point of obsession). From the beginning, Kyon tells us that he use to dream of espers, aliens, and time-travelers but after growing up has left all that childish stuff behind. He constantly complains when the things that Haruhi brings into existence don't conform to his mature view of how the world should be. But be this as it may when given a choice of a normal world or his original world which is filled with these strange existances, he chooses the latter saying how much more fun it was. I've probably gotten of couple things wrong due to my terrible memory, but in my opinion, these are the three main points that the anime was attempting to convey. One of the numerous things that makes it such a masterpiece is that there are so many connections that can be drawn between so many things. The writers have made it so that even if you don't notice one of the messages, chances are that if you are paying attention you'll be able to find one that you relate to.
@roxolp6043 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said, but I'd like to say that I believe the film isn't about Yuki instead of Kyon, but about both of them together. The ending of the film where Kyon walks up to the club room affirming that he is now an active defender of this world, which is a shift from his outlook prior to the film. I've also been reading the books lately and the events of this film have a noticeable impact on Kyon's character, while he still complains, he fully acknowledges that he is having fun, and in the 2 novels I've read past the events of the Disappearance, has referenced the events already several times. I think the Disappearance is a huge turning point in the series and its due to the impact it has on both Yuki's and Kyon's characters, as well as the impact it has on their relationship.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya was the first Blu-ray I ever bought. I watched it as long as my PS3 worked. It’s an emotional and animated masterpiece. I immediately related to Yuki, and she became my favorite character in anime. I Endless Eight was the greatest buildup in anime series I have ever experienced. It was a bit painful to watch the same story unfolding 8 times. Then you realize our poor Yuki has been living those 2 weeks for almost 600 years. And she remembers it all! And she left the choice to Kyon! Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies playing in the background as Nagato changes is always emotionally striking. Thank you for acknowledging this masterpiece.

A beautifully succinct analysis, with which I completely concur. Thank you. There are a couple of points I'd like to draw your attention to. If you note the books that Yuki is seen reading throughout the series, and even in the film, they all have relevance to Nagato's journey towards her 'becoming' Yuki, the individual. Also, if you recall in the episode 'Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody,' Haruhi's message to Orihime and Hikoboshi is 'I am here.' This is effectively echoed in the actions of Yuki Nagato on the night that she alters the world. She is seen gently waving her hand in the air, as if calling to someone or trying to attract someone's attention, i.e. she is saying 'I am here.' It's therefore fitting that when Kyon kneels before her towards the end of 'Disappearance' he's acknowledging Yuki for who she is and not what she is. Thank you once again for your video.

I can't even put into words how i felt and still feel to learn that Yasuhiro was one of the ones lost in the fire. it just hurts still only way i know how to say thank you to him is to enjoy my favorite series. and i feel like Yuki is the most important character in the series as a whole the movie did a beautiful job showing how important she is.

I think the thing about Nagato beign forced to live 600 years reliving the endless 8 over and over again contributed for her snapping.

I guess all of us felt sympathetic towards yuki at the end of the movie but unconciously, it transmitted its message in a subtle way but i kind of felt like yuki's pain which i couldn't understand at all was finally understood, after watching your video

Good vid. I love this movie, and Nagato is the best girl in anime. Many scene of this movie is beautiful. Like the rooftop scene, the Asakura ballet, Kyon speech and Kyon touching Haruhi face. Too many great scene make people also forget the other like Nagato bitting Kyon arm and when Kyon asked Nagato to wait for him in the clubroom. She answered yes. If someone watch Clannad after story, they know this scene is comparable with Nagisa choice to be with MC even she know the future with him look like.

beautiful video. i just wonder why you never once mentioned the almost endless summer repeats yuki went through in the endless 8 arc.

The thing I loved about The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya was how well it ties into probably the worst part of the tv series being endless eight. As a viewer you suffered through those 8 episodes and honestly its hard to sit through, so as a viewer you can relate a lot to Yuki's mindset being she remembers all of the time loop which is what leads her to change reality to this. We then get to see a different Yuki whos a lot more human compared to the original reality.

You really need to read the novels to understand that, just as the time-traveler(s), esper(s), and alien(s) knew more about Haruhi, they also knew more about Kyon.

While this movie analysis made good sense, it also forgot the fact that it was originally based on the actual Light Novel first and foremost. Those who had read the Light Novel would know that this particular arc is actually about Yuki Nagato trying to make Kyon choose between which world is better-- one that is normal, or one that is not. Nagato even had to disobey her seniors just to make this one particular chance for Kyon to make a choice, simply because she knows he is the only person closer to their idea of a "God" (Haruhi) who can help bring in a genuine "reaction" that her seniors badly needed. But in hindsight, it's also Nagato finally possessing a tinge of emotion from all the things she experienced, even as an observer of Haruhi and those around her. Kyon would later understand this in the Novel, and gives particular attention to Nagato after the Disappearance of Haruhi arc.

This movie is one of those rare stories that depending on how you look at it, has a good ending (finding Haruhi, the brigade members, and returning the world back to normal), and the bad ending (Yuki Nagato being unable to live a normal life).

Indeed a great analysis good sir! Very in depth. I my self just finished the series just a few days ago for the very first time and even thoe the episodes were very enjoyable (endless 8 got a bit irritating) the movie is what really gave the series that final piece to be a great anime worthy of a watch. You realize and feel very bad for poor Yuki. I know I was very late for the watch, but am glad I did and went into it spoiler free which helped in the enjoyment.

It's always interesting to see people experience media many years after it's release. When I saw Disappearance when it first came out, there was never any question the film was about Nagato. It was hotly anticipated as "Nagato's Arc" by fans. Nagato's longing for a normal Life was so engaging that it got it's own spin-off series. How bizarre that in the years since, the conversation had shifted so much to other aspects that the core of the story had been forgotten.

I know why I feel like I understand her so much, because Yuki and I are the same kind of person. From your analysis, it sounds like the movie paints how a kuudere/danders feels. Even though we don't show our emotions, it affects us that much more and so it means the world to us to be recognized.
@BossVongola104 жыл бұрын
As for me, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya's foreground is the Nagato story as in your understanding. However, background is about Kyon, not only true desire for entertainment but Kyon's role and place in the world, his true identity.

Thabk you for talking about yuki because that's exactly how it felt to me when i watched it. Although of course the film itself doesn't show that directly since it also focuses on haruhi and kyon's choice, so that's why you're video was awesome

Your analysis of Yuki Nagato is so absolutely spot on. However I think there is one point in your video I have to disagree on. Disappearance and the original series is absolutely Kyons story through and through. The series shows us who and what Haruhi is and her relationship with Kyon, she is the embodiment of Kyons existential desires. Disappearance contextualise what Yuki is to Kyon. Your amazing point about Yuki being the deus ex machina also applies to Kyon he more than anyone has solved a lot of Haruhis shenanigans he was the man who ended the endless eight. Yuki is Kyons innate mundane persona the simple life, a visual metaphor for the life he always asked for but never truly considered its implications. Haruhi and Yuki and two sides of Kyon and both retroactively serve Kyons arc. Disappearance fully realises Yukis story and purpose in the narrative however to say the movie is about her is too far fetched, we also need to take note about that fact that almost every shot in this movie feature Kyon and his pov is our only perspective of the story because its the only one that matters. The Entire Haruhi Suzumiya story IS Kyons story.
@NSSpaser4 жыл бұрын
For whatever it's worth, I totally support your viewpoint. When I rewatched the series years after I first experienced it (and read through all the light novels), I realized that there was this huge subtext of Kyon and Haruhi developing their relationship and growing as people, and that just helped me appreciate all the effort and detail that went into the animation and story.

I always think the disappearance of Nagato chan is actually a world that Yuki have visited a nd manage to gain inspiration on having a normal life

In the novel, Kyon once compared Nagato to the club like Nitrogen to the atmosphere. Given how truly significant they were despite being unnoticed, that analogy really fits.
