I have read Wind Up Bird, Kafka, and Norwegian Wood. After you find his “rhythm” very enjoyable reading. Just be prepared to go to a place far away, but also all around you.

@@afsha321shaikh Good for you! The Wind Up Bird Chronicles and Kafka By The Shore are, to me, very different from Norwegian Wood. The style is Murikami for sure, but the story’s metaphysical adventures are mesmerizing. Murikami leaves you questioning what is real, and what is just our own perception of every day. I started studying English under the influence of Haruki Murakami. He says you need to read The Great Gatsby in English in order to fully understand its content. I like The Great Gatsby and I want to be able to read it in English.

Fitzgerald is definitely one of those writers whose language enhances the reading experience. Very jazzy sentences. Great vocabulary. I once started reading This Side of Paradise and I simply couldn't stop.

I stumbled this wonderful writers work through serendipity. Interestingly enough, right around the time I decided to have the audacity to write a draft for novel. He is right, resolving to do something as simple as writing in my journal everyday motivated me to begin working on a novel. So, I've been writing in my journal for 2 months now and are currently a week in on my novel. I write 500 words a day for now. But, I do want to increase it to 1,000 words.

Have you checked out The Artist's Way? It's a good creativity program kind of book. I got as far as chapter one but it got me started writing in my journal every day, at least 3 pages, and that by itself has been such a good change. I'm glad you found something that works for you--can't ask for much more!

it seems to me it really is just finally getting into a habit that gives your the opportunity to grow even 1% better at something everyday. It seems so slow and arduous a task, many give up, but it seems that if you push through that urge to quit and take an easier path you will finally find some success. The fact that this insight is repeated by many of the most successful people in the world speaks volumes I think.

I started with his running book followed by a number of short stories swiftly followed by Norweighn Wood and Kafkre Shore - which I loved. He is also very skilled at writing mudane events and activities in a very satisfying and enjoyable way. He is one these writers whose writing seems effortless. Murikami is someone who needs to be read, not described.

I enjoyed this video, but was confused by the use of the word "manuscript" in it. It states that Murakami says he writes 20 manuscripts per day, as in 20 separate pieces of fiction/nonfiction? That doesn't sound right. Obviously, he's an incredibly talented and prolific writer, but does manuscript here mean "page," or something like that?

Wikipedia defines a manuscript page, and style; 10 or 12 pt, double spaced, seems to equal about 250 words per page. So I think this quote means writing 20 pages of 250 words = 5000 words. That sounds plausible in 4 or 5 hours of work - especially if he's in a kind of meditative state while writing. Although it is a lot, unless you have a really clear plan of where the story is going. 3600 x 250 = 900k. I guess it's possible that it took 900k (of work) to get to a first draft he was happy with (i.e. writing a lot of dead end ideas that he threw out, or found better ideas later). Conventional wisdom says that a story will have a lot of scenes that get rewritten or replaced in order to have great scenes all the way through, just like a sculpture removes lots of unnecessary material. Of course, the downside of word count goals (for new writers) is that it can be tempting to waste time writing a lot of crap, just for the sake of the word count, and pretend to have made progress (which I have often done). I don't know if Murakami writes a lot of crap to reach this daily goal, but regardless, he comes out with something he is happy with at the end. I suppose we don't know if each 'page' is connected. He might write 20 different individual ideas of 250 words, and then weave them together in revision into scenes and narrative. So my comment wasn't much help at all, really.

I've read Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball, A Wild Sheep Chase, Dance Dance Dance, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Killing Commendatore from Murakami. I would say the last one really gripped me and even though The wind-up bird is one of his most famous ones, the commendatore had something that wouldn't let me stop thinking about it even months later. His very first work Hear the Wind Sing is also incredible. It is raw and unpolished and it was also the first book I've read from this author which immediately made me fall in love with his writing. I think reading his first and his last book would give a great introduction to Murakami's world

@@lera8577 I think his books tend to tell the same story at different stages. So for someone just starting, I'd recommend either Kafka on the Shore or Norwegian Wood. The first is his most best explorative/weird book while the second is his most normal book. I'd recommend the first because why not go for him at the height of his 'murakami' depth, instead of going for him deliberate writing a normal books, good as it might be. I personally started with sputnik sweetheart and definitely don't regret it. But that's my journey.

I knew that this is how Murakami writes his novels: calculated, systematically, superficial, random pointless storys with some nice random thoughts, allegories and metaphors, pseudointellectual, random anecdotes (probably about the things that Maurakami has been dealing with at the moment), sex of course, unfullfilled desires, existential thoughts, kitschy fantasy "magic" (whoah, AMAZING). That is why I do not like his novels.
