Excellent stuff. I like the way you don't just list the advice, but also offer slight alterations based on your own ideas and experience, like changing the key word in number 6 from repetition to perseverance.

Thank you 🙂 It's encouraging that my input is a benefit to it, I always like to add as much value as I can. Hopefully even if other writers don't quite agree with me, it'll get them thinking critically about their own approach.

Thank you for the advice brother and kind words. You are right, you wont feel so alone in writing once you realize other people are struggling to write as well. All the hopes and Blessings to you brother and your writing. Thank you for sharing Murakami’s wisdom as well. Ill run to write now and write to run. Writing and running on the side of the egg.

Since Murakami seems to like Franz Kafka I think the idea of a garage might be somewhat inspired by Kafka's story The country doctor: "One doesn't know the sorts of things he has stored in his own house", the doctor explaimed after a monster came out of a dark pig sty... House represents one own's being, if not the subconscious to be more precise. If you are empty, you can't create anything fulfilling.

I like the advice in this video Kieren. Especially the first one, which is something I’ve been wondering about at the moment with my current novella.
@KierenWestwoodWriting3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! Yeah that first one is really simple but valuable advice I think. It can definitely help you avoid over-egging an important point.

Really enjoyed this one-thanks, Kieren! Just in case this is helpful for anyone, I work on multiple stories at a time. I can definitely see the merit in immersing yourself wholly in one story - so all your thoughts and dreams are running in the same direction - but that's not what I've done up until now. It might be different for novels, but certainly writing short fiction, I find flitting about when I get stuck really works. Almost like my subconscious works on one while I'm consciously working on another.

Thank you for reminding me to read more Murakami! The advice about target audience made me think of the book I've read recently that deals with this subject. Hallucinating Foucault by Patricia Duncker is a beautiful depiction of love between reader and writer. Highly recommend.

@@KierenWestwoodWriting I really liked the point about focussing on the audience, but bearing in mind the audience should not be as many people as possible. I think it's important to write what matters to you, like you said, as that will come across to the reader. Passion shines through when it's something an author cares about imo

Simple, practical advice for writers, without getting into the specifics of style, theme, or technique, where nearly all writing advice goes astray.

Hye, KW, thanks a lot, it'was a great video, so helpful. I am an aspiring writer, who started writing. I think, a writer can write more than one, if the themes are different, if the themes are the same, may be our ideas may be divided and we may not be able to do justice to the characters as we want them to be or to develop. I would like to add another point on '" share your dreams'" is that may be that, the writer must share the dream of changing the people or the world, or certain things politically or socially or anything that's not so right, bcz, most of the time you cannot tell the concerned VIP's directly, or for that matter any issue that cannot be voiced directly. just like Jonathan Swift has done in Gulliver's Travels.😊God bless you and Good Luck
@KierenWestwoodWriting2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I agree with you. The 'share your dreams' tip I think is definitely one that might be different for every writer. Writing to change the world definitely fits though I think!
@MeredithPhillipsWrites3 жыл бұрын
If you're ever in doubt that your writing skill has progressed, take a look back at the very first thing you started writing. I can almost guarantee the cringe level will be very high and you'll be able to appreciate how far you've come! I hate the 'share your dreams' advice only because it's so hard 😂 Consarn it, can't I be an accomplished writer without sharing my stuff with anyone?? I was so nervous the first time I shared something with a group, but it's easier now. And it's part of the process, so at some point you have to get used to it.
@KierenWestwoodWriting3 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with looking back, it does give you some perspective for sure ☺️ I know what you mean, sharing doesn’t really get much easier for me. It always feels like what I’m sharing isn’t ready 😕 but nothing ever is!

I don't think I agree with the second point. When I write for a while and notice that I'm running out of gas, I stop writing and start working out. It has been the most helpful way to help me come back. I'll do some lifting and calisthenics, and then play a half-hour of Minecraft or Valorant.
