The only reason characters say things in certain ways (shouted, whispered, screamed, etc) is because they are experiencing some kind of underlying emotion. As a reader (and writer) I'm much more interested in showing and exploring and feeling that underlying emotion than simply using a dialogue tag as a crutch to avoid doing so. Why did they shout or scream or feel the need to whisper? Let me see that instead.

Man, thanks for this video I actually wrote something for the first time. I mean, not really. All the writing I used to do since 2021 was by roleplaying with friends. And sure, it was fun, but I always wished to do something more. Like write actual pieces, as a little hobby besides drawing. But I always got insecure about my abilities and compared myself to my writer friends. Today I wrote a scene between some of my characters, with around 760 words. And sure it isn't a lot, but to me it's a meaningful start. My writing of course ended up very shitty- lol. But I don't care, I kinda had fun and I know this is just the beginning, so I can't just expect to be writing like Shakespeare. Pluuus English is not my first language. Thank you so much, today I made it be day one!

I'm going to throw out my opinion on the motivation problem. Obviously it goes without saying that this is just my personal opinion and your mileage may vary, but in my personal experience this comes down to 2 sorts of problems. Firstly, burnout due to forcing yourself to keep to some sort of schedule when you're tired. In that case what I typically do is set a timer for just five minutes (something that seems manageable) and force myself to write for that period of time. Write anything. If you write a bad sentence or paragraph, then at least you have a better idea of the direction you're trying to go (since that wasn't it). I might just get a single sentence or a paragraph. When the timer is up, I re-evaluate on whether I want to continue or not. Progress is progress regardless of whether it's a tsunami or it's drip fed. The second issue, I find, is that you're stuck on a particular part of your story and aren't sure how to proceed. In that case, I think the problem is that people tend to think of the writing process as linear. I have to write scene 2 following scene 1, that sort of thing. When I get stuck on a particular part, I just write some exposition like "And something happens here" and pick up from where I know I want the scene to end (Or the next major plot point). Nothing says that you have to write everything in order. It's perfectly fine to jump around and come back to fix things later on when you've had a chance to mull it over - especially in the first draft.
@KierenWestwoodWriting
@KierenWestwoodWriting Күн бұрын
Good tips there or sure. The nonlinear thing especially feels like it wouldn't occur to newer writers, but could be exactly what they need to get out of a rut. The five minute timer approach sounds like a smart idea as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Originally, planned to create a game but since at my current assets, my setups are just not good enough even for a starter game-making apps. Very old device. But now I am making a new path for it. I am planning to write a novel so I can plan the story for the game by getting feedbacks and foreshadow my game mechanics and stuff. I think this is the path that may work and I am not afraid of failing.

As far as the music goes, book one of my fantasy novel was written entirely to Us and Them - London Philharmonic Orchestra just played on repeat. It got to the point that as soon as I heard the ticking clock at the opening, my mind would instantly switch to "writing mode". Book two however took a dark turn and I found the ambient music of Cryo Chamber (I highly recommend checking out their music here on KZbin) fit the mood well.

I am currently working on a draft of my story for 2.5 months. It's a story I have been thinking of writing about since 2017. And it's based on a true story that happened in my life. I guess I just would like to know your thoughts on writing story that's based on true story and life experiences and what would I have to pay more attention/what would be challenging in doing this kind of writing

I haven’t really tried it myself so can only give you my best guess I’m afraid! I’d say it’s worth staying as faithful to the real life events as you can, but also not being afraid to use some artistic licence if needs be. If things need to happen in a slightly different order or a little quicker or slower to make a clearer or more engaging story, do that. It’s a fine balance I suppose, like all things writing!

I usually give to each of my main characters one of my biggest quality paired with one of my worst flaws. It makes it easier for me to "know" them and to write about something I struggle with. Also, I think Tolkien said that Faramir was directly inspired by his own personality. To be honest, it's my favorite character also.

Great advice! Ive found commonalities along the way with people and writing styles as well as in context of content creation and content consumption. A few things: great writers and people who have been writing a long time will write in a style in which the reader automatically will have a vision attached to what they are reading. So any in scenario, if you're creating a vision, you're already set the groundwork. Another trait commonly found amongst writers and which is why reading is really important is the most important asked question which is why? Curiosity creates great writers, which they tend to find unhidden links to everything in this world. Another factor is not to het overly attached and create an emotional bond with your writing because then after you will fall into a pit. And lastly, having an open mind and broadening your horizon on everything. Once you have a set belief on any given topic, you then decimate your curiosity into judgment.
@KierenWestwoodWriting

With regard to authors being reflected in their own stories, I've never been aware of this as I'm reading, but I remember being very surprised to discover after finishing the book that E. M. Forster wrote himself into A Room With A View. He saw himself as the very unappealing, dislikeable Cecil Vyse, and I've read that one or two other famous authors wrote themselves into their books as the most socially awkward character.

All art is a reflection, reaction, or rejection of our life experience, it can't be otherwise. Everything a character does in a story, whether the author would endorse it or not, can only exist in context to their own experiences and moral framework. I think this is what is meant when he says, "every character is a representation of yourself", not that every character is like you, but that every character, no matter how much you twist them around, ultimately stems from your world view. But it's not about what we commonly think about as a "self-insert". Honestly I don't think it's something to worry about over much, other than by being aware of it gaining more control over how we bend, twist, spindle, or mutilate our worldview in service of a character. Ultimately though, we'll always be chained to ourselves, the best we can do is lengthen the chain by broadening our experiences.

If anything, I have way too many. I think it comes down to reading widely, and not just fiction, but history and other non-fiction. I don't write historical fiction, and I make sure to mix and match to avoid making my content derivative, but this helps. Which lead to the next point: mixing and matching ideas. Try to bring many ideas together. And think beyond themes; plot and character and even atmosphere are also part of this. I am working on a novella that I started because of the atmosphere of an album cover by a metal band: The Xun Protectorate by Khonsu. Just be creative.

I tend to be a pantser, especially where characters are involved. I have general ideas about both them & the plot (or lack thereof), & only really come to know the characters as I write them, finding that at a certain point, they will take over & write themselves (when I hit the zone, I guess), though sometimes I do get frustrated when they start behaving outside of what I had planned for them. The novel I am working on now will have an ever-expanding number of characters, so I am excited about seeing how this plays out. I do listen to a wide variety of music, but usually am more tempo based all depending on the scene I am writing (high action combined with Eastern European gypsy music or Cumbria, whereas slower scenes might be something like Birth of the Cool or Debussy, I do prefer complicated harmonics & melody lines for dialogue). Excellent video & lots to think about.

EDIT: Sponsor is not an Ai service. I was loud and wrong. Only leaving this up because others might think it is. Glad to be wrong on this. original comment: The Ai cover "art" sponsor is a really bad look. Why would I read a book whose cover already shows me that the author doesn't care about artistic integrity and is fine with real artists being exploited by a soulless algorithm? Why would I assume that their writing isn't also Ai? Pay an artist or use a photo. Don't support Ai services who steal from actual creatives. Artists of all disciplines have to support eachother or none of our fields will survive this.
