Harvard Law School LL.M. Centennial | Plenary 1: Judges and Judging on Int'l and Supreme Courts

This year, Harvard Law School celebrated the centennial of its Master of Laws program with an event that brought together hundreds of the program's alums from around the world. "LL.M. 100: Transforming Lives and Law Around the World" took place over two days in September and featured keynotes, panel discussions, and plenary sessions.

THE FINAL JUDGEMENT • The Supreme Court rejected the plea for queer persons 'right to marry • The Court unanmously agreed that there is no fundamental right to marriage • The judges unanaimously refused to give legal backing to same - sex marriages under the special Marriage Act • By a 32 majority , the Court held that queer couples do not have the right to adoption or the right to form civil unions • All judges agreed that transgender persons in heterosexual marriages have the right to marry under the existing legal framework

The law guides,protects ,and restricts in all of us from birth to death in a myria of ways. For example, the law dictates what we must do if we wish to marry; it establishes certain obligations to husbands,wives , and children. It tells us how close we can build our house to that of our neighbor or how much rent we must pay our land -lord . It demands that professionals such as doctors and lawyers maintain standards of competence. The law re-quires healthful conditions for work -ers in factories and specific structural regulations in the construction of buildings of our rstates . The object of law is enforce standards of social behavior so that fair-ness prevails and conflicts is avoided .When disputes occur,the courts provide the means to peaceful settlement. This law functions as a part of government and is backed by the power of the state.
