Harvard's Deep Ties to Slavery: Report Shows It Profited, Then Tried to Erase History of Complicity

In the final part of our Juneteenth special broadcast, we look at Harvard University's recent report detailing the school's extensive ties to slavery and pledged $100 million for a fund for scholars to continue to research the topic. The report documents dozens of prominent people associated with Harvard who enslaved people, including four Harvard presidents. Harvard commissioned the study in 2019 as part of a wave of schools reckoning with their pasts and the ongoing legacy of racial discrimination. "Harvard's ties to slavery begin with the founding of the institution," says MIT historian Craig Steven Wilder, author of "Ebony & Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America's Universities." Wilder says that while this history is not new, Harvard worked for decades to erase its complicity in slavery. "We're really only beginning to reconcile and to really struggle with the deep ties that this institution has to slavery," he adds.

after going down the rabbit hole of some research that i was doing, i ran across an article that shows the main road in my city is named after the largest slave owner in this county that i live in. All of the roads in the main part of town are named after slave owners. I posted it on one of my social medias and i cannot find my post or the article anywhere now. there is definitely an intention to distort our memories.

Agreed. This kind of wide-spread, systematized inhumane behavior in the early modern era can usually be tied back to capitalism and it's phase of "primitive accumulation". And later to imperialism and the division and re-division of land, peoples and resources by the powerful and wealthy. It's a sick system, and it needs to be changed.

The OSS psychological profile of Hitler described him thus: "His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it." This is actually a smart way to go about this and something pretty much all Americans would get behind. It’s only when they target white people *as a whole* that it becomes a contested issue. Which is reasonable, as for all we know that white person’s ancestors could’ve been avid abolitionists who fought like hell for civil rights. It’s less about the money and more about the principle of just blanket shaming like that. But that’s how the state and media do - frame things in a way that will elicit emotional responses from both sides, creating more division, more anger and hate, more distraction from their sadistic games. They were slime then and they’re still slime now.

Whether it happened in 1610, 1975 or 2022. It doesn't matter. We as a nation should take responsibility for our nation's past crimes against humanity. And we must NEVER ever forget. Paid by tax money? So even the black people should pay taxes for the "reparations"? Or are you going to hold the "elite" responsible that like to hide their wealth in offshore accounts or big "charitable organizations"?
@spadesmaster2153
@spadesmaster2153 Жыл бұрын
@@halloola3636 The country that took millions into slavery and currently have their offspring subjected to systemic racism and plagued with a plethora of ills is still here. The "American Govt" owes reparative compensation to descendants of slaves. Did you know it took the Haitian Govt 122 years to completely pay off reparations to France for reasons which were literally asinine? America threaten her with sanctions if she did not, so it is only just for America to pay descendants of slaves over the course of the next 122 years until it's paid in full!

@@halloola3636 America is the country, I made that clear... and why would children of slaves pay taxes on reparations? Something that's intended for them? I am confused about your elitist question. Whom are you talking about when it comes to Elite? Right now the argument is for America to pay. I do not know whom you are referring to when it comes to those of whom are among the Elite, but ultimately all will pay whom had a hand in enslaving my people!

Maybe the Harvard’s 11 billion dollar endowment can be cut in half and the money spent on building affordable housing in predominantly minority low income neighborhoods. That’s enough to buy over 15,000 low cost housing units and rent them at rates less than 80% of median rent, and still make back most of the investment over time.

Seriously??? All this money does not need to be spent on a no good report. Just give the money to the people. With say, the Japanese that was kept locked on compounds here in usa. USA government didn't waste money on a useless report. They "PAID" those people for the few years they were kept in compounds. The people who worked sun up to sun down, has relative that is still waiting for what was promised to the ancestors that never received the beast if burden and the acreage. USA government still to this day will not do the right way towards those peoples.
