I have 4 strawberry patches and they’re all pumping out tons of fruit this year. I am picking morning and evening and can’t keep up! Just a few simple things are helping me bring in healthy, beautiful berries:
1. A focus on soil health by refreshing spaces with compost each season
2. I keep birds out with nets, squirrels out with motion sprinklers. Toy snakes work too! Just move them every few days so they think they’re real.
3. I pick at half-blush so they’re not as tempting to critters.
4. I don’t remove runners and daughters so new plants can take root. I’ve read strawberries burn out after 4 years and need replacing anyhow!
5. I grow in guilds to form allies between varying plant types. I use strawberries, blueberries, valerian and dandelion. This year I’m adding borage!
I hope this helps!
