Timing and proper storage are the keys to the success of how long your sweet potatoes will last. I show you how to harvest them from Florida's typical sandy soil garden and I tell you the easiest way to "cure" them.

CANNERS:
This is similar to the old canner that has lasted me for decades. It has the weighted jiggler which is easier to maintain the pressure with less hovering over the stove to make sure it’s at the correct pressure: amzn.to/42fonwJ
If you can afford a bigger one, it will be worth the investment if you plan to do a lot of canning. This one doubles as a water bath canner: amzn.to/3N9foJp
PRESSURE COOKER FOR MEALS:
Please choose a stainless steel pressure cooker, not an aluminum one. Old aluminum pots are pitted which indicates that aluminum leached into the food! This one is similar to mine. I cook dry beans in the pressure cooker and then use it to also can pint jars. amzn.to/3MGTWKh

I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.

I didn't get as many this year. as other years, but--- I planted vines later by clipping them off other vines.

I did both. I started them early in dirt for slips. Then cut some vines later and started roots from them. Those did not have as long to grow, so the potatoes were smaller. With the foliage dying on all of them, that taught me to get them in the ground asap after my main Spring crop is harvested.

@@debbiesorganicgarden I actually cut some of the vines off after watching one of your videos! I just started it too late for our season here I think. I started some slips in some jars. I wonder if they will last ovver the winter! What do you think? I think I could put them in the ground in April if I protect is from late freeze.

@@A.LeaBeallArt I doubt they will last over the winter unless there is a potato underground. It that gets frozen, it won't grow more vines. I get volunteers because I miss some. Even small ones will sprout and grow vines. But my ground never freezes.

How often do you water? Looks like a great harvest 🙏🙏

I do the finger test. I stick my finger into the dirt up to the first knuckle. If it's dry, I water. That time of year, it usually rains often enough. Florida summer is our rainy season.

I think you are right if they are harvested in the Fall. An example is carrots. I wash them, then dry them for a day or so. Then I store them in the fridge because carrots are harvested in early Spring here. They would not last in the heat of summer.
