I don't know how good the new one is, but people really like the story. Personally, I like how much drama/conflict are going on outside of the main character. . I remember people being domewhat mixed about the dungeon and combat though. Some say 4 and 5's combat systems are straight improvement, others like the version in 3 and 3 fes where your party members are controlled by AI and you can only control their priority. I don't remember anyone praising Tartarus (dungeon) as enjoyable, though I've heard it makes sense for the story and even improve it. The combat parts are just what I've heard though, I don't like turn-based combat way back then so I either play it on easy or let someone else play it for me.

It's very-very good (in many ways *much* better than a lot of modern Persona stuff, and modern JRPGs in general), but it's also not a game that can be recommended to literally everyone for... various reasons. The thing that is important to know about Persona 3, is that it was created with a very specific audience in mind: a lonely, introverted, shut-in teenage/young adult male with zero to none social contacts who spends most of his time alone in his room playing videogames. The protagonist of P3 reflects that, being an apathetic, somewhat lazy, "I don't give a shit about anything" type of guy who prefers to be left alone and not interact to anyone (albeit for a different, plot-related reason), and the game is purposefully made to be as appealing to that target audience as possible while simultaneously demonstrating how having this approach to life is not ideal and that you're missing out on *a lot* of stuff if you do everything in your power to avoid making connections to people. So, while the themes of Persona 3 are really well handled and it's message is even more important in our day and age than it was when the game first came out, it's also full of your very typical "anime" stuff that may or may not have a negative effect on your engagement with the story depending on your preferences. It's not "awful" by any means, of course, but some scenes *can* be pretty grating at times. To reiterate, narrative-wise - including both the characters and the themes - P3 is great. Gameplay-wise... it's a mixed bag, or rather, an acquired taste. A lot of the stuff in it is a product of it's age, and while many of those things are nowhere near as bad as people sometimes complain about and can even be pretty enjoyable (I unironically enjoy exploring Tartarus for it's atmosphere and "evolving" soundtrack, for example, no matter how repetitive and boring it can be in terms of actually going through it, and having no control over your party members other than the MC, while very unconventional, actually works out in the game's favor, in my opinion, because P3 is *designed* around it and provides a lot of options for handling the AI), it certainly requires a level of tolerance on the player's part. The battle system is pretty fun and engaging (on Hard mode, at least), albeit nowhere near as complex as some of what Shin Megami Tensei series has to offer, and social-sim mechanics are also pretty good for what the developers were trying to accomplish. The game *definitely* leans much more into the latter, to be fair, and you'll spend way more time interacting with people and "living a high school life" than solving a grand mystery or fighting unknown enemies in a mystical dangerous world with your unique superpowers, so if that aspect of Persona series doesn't really appeal to you, the chances are you won't enjoy Persona 3 all that much. Lastly, P3 is a bit weird in that when people are talking about "playing Persona 3" that can mean *vastly* different things depending on the version of the game they had experienced. To begin with, there is the original P3 for PS2, that for all intents and purposes may as well not exist anymore, because literally no one is playing it and there is no reason TO play it. Then there is Persona 3 FES: an updated re-release of P3 with new content and an entire second story that acts as a continuation to the original and has it's own dungeons, and enemies, and bosses. Then-then we have Persona 3 Portable, which has severely downgraded visuals (because PSP couldn't handle PS2-level graphics), but more than makes up for it by adding manual party control, new difficulty setting and allowing you to play as a female protagonist, which completely changes most of the scenes and greatly affects your interactions with other characters (unlike how it's usually done in games, where the only things that are different are your avatar, available romantic partners and maybe a couple lines of dialogue). And, lastly, there is the recent Persona 3 Reload remake that looks amazing and is very enjoyable to play... but it also changes some stuff and doesn't have a lot of the other stuff that people liked in previous versions, so... it's a mixed bag, once again. Overall, I think that you definitely *should* try P3 - just be aware that just because a lot of other people are really in love with this game doesn't mean that you will 100% like it as well.
