Harvesting and Processing Black Walnuts Our Adventure

This is the beginning of our adventure in learning how to processing black walnuts. They grow abundantly in our yard and in most areas central thru the east coast of the United States. Its always good to have and know how to utilize wild food options. After going thru this I have some great advice: number 1, a pressure washer would just blast all of the hull off... We don't have one.... 2, wear gloves and old clothes because black walnuts stain everything. 3, cutting them open is a slow process if you plan on doing a ton of them...... We will be borrowing a pressure washer from someone next time.
I am excited to crack these babies open and try some out. If you have ever processed black walnuts please let us know how you went about doing it.
On Garden and Grease we share our experiences with developing our backyard homestead. I collected several alids bags full of black walnuts. They are a pain in the ass to process, but now I have a TON curing. I also have a nice haul of butternuts. I’ll have to give you some. They are far superior in flavor in my opinion (though black walnut is great for baked goods.)

Yeah I really want to get my hands on a pressure washer it would make this process super easy. Might look for a used one online. I would love some butternuts
