Hi. I had calaloo seeds and stems last year that I threw in a pot of red dirt. I didn’t see them grow at all. So I took some compost and mixed it in. Then abandoned it. So in the winter I Just covered it. I thought it was rotting so I just left it. Then I added dark dirt to it and mixed it in this years spring time. I thought nothing was growing so I threw in sweet pepper seeds in the dirt and saw some little green sprouts a following year later - this year. However, i noticed that the plants were growing robust and wondered why I couldn’t see fruits. I saw a white flower on 1 and the other had thick stalk. I even thought it was not as green as the other plant because of lack of sun. To my surprise one day I saw the seedling that looked like a calaloo. And lo and behold, the tall behind FULL plant is calaloo growing next to bell peppers.😁

Lovely calaloo. I heard you talk about stink bugs. What's the remedy for them? What would happen if you cut all the stalks just leaving the plant to spring again?
@homeandgardenfixandtricks69384 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZzVlJWEndakepY click this link to watch my video on how to treat stink bugs. If you cut them too low the plant can die or take too long to regenerate hence you need to leave enough leaves and stems for easy regeneration.

I saw in one of the comments that you are growing Amaranthus Viridis variety. I dont know what kind "Cows Tongue Callaloo" seed I purchased in Jamaica is, but very few sprouted last year so I let them go to seed. One plant had a tinge of red in the leaf, it grew the tallest. The seeds gathered from this plant sprouted the best this year. Out of 80 seedlings only a dozen are plain green leaf, the rest are variegated red-green but all are doing well so far in our longer Canadian summer days. I will try a few from cuttings to see if I can extend the growing season. Two question: 1-Will the red-green be bitter or tough? 2- Should I snip the tops of the new plants at some point to promote branching or just make the first harvest cut above the second or third node once it reach 10-12" and allow it to branch naturally? Thank you for your videos, I just discovered them!
@homeandgardenfixandtricks69383 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear that you have been growing callaloo successfully in Canada. To answer your first question, no they won't be bitter its just as a result of cross pollination why you are having those variegated leaves. Any callaloo can be tough just harvest them early before they get too fibrous. To answer your second question: yes removing the apical shoot will promote lateral sprouting so yes you can go ahead but if they are in an advance state now just wait until the first harvest. There is no weight or wrong way with these things just do what works best for you. It would be helpful if I can see them to make better comments and then I could advise you better. You can send some photos to me at homeandgardenfixandtricks@gmail.com

@homeandgardenfixandtricks69383 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you are having difficulties. Beetles can be controlled by 1, scouting your plants daily and remove them manually, 2. Use neem oil to spray your plants, 3. Use a fine mesh around your plants to prevent insects from visiting them off possible. Hope you can implement at least two of these recommendations.

@@homeandgardenfixandtricks6938 I am looking forward to your new video. I'm growing amaranth for the first time in north Texas and I'm not sure if it's growing slowly or not. I build my soil with rock dusts, worm castings (from my own worm bins) and chemical-free compost. I do add some ocean/fish fertilizer and trace minerals after the plants have grown at least 4 inches.
