It’s not that the protection layer didn’t form, it’s that you let too many of the leaves turn brown before you harvested. Each set of leaves is a layer of protection around the entire bulb. I usually let only the bottom three to four sets of leaves turn brown before pulling to cure. Otherwise you end up without the layers of protection like you saw.

The information I get from garlic farms when I bought seed garlic says that garlic should be harvested when the bottom 2-3 leaves die off, leaving several green leaves still on the plant. I always do that, and I get a nice fully wrapped bulb that lasts for a long time. Once in a while I have had a few plants turn completely brown, like many of yours have, and I had the same results, separated cloves with no wrapper that had to be used first. I live in an area that people say you can't grow hard neck garlic because it's too warm, and they won't form bulbs. I vernalize the seed garlic for 6 weeks in the refrigerator before planting in November and I get great bulbs, which are ready even earlier. This year my garlic scaped in April, and I harvested in May.

Ah. Glad to see this video today. I've started using this channel as a yardstick to know when I still have 1 more month to do whatever they are doing. Planting in April? We'll see about May. Harvesting in June? July it is. Planting a second sow in September? Next May....

I am jealous. Last October I planted 16 garlic cloves. This was my first time really gardening past having a planter on a stairwell, so I didn't think to put netting up or anything...my yard is host to a lot of chipmunks and bunnies but I thought they weren't supposed to like garlic. In the very early spring I noticed one clove had been dug up, so I replanted it and proceeded to also plant kale in there and put up some netting because I knew at least the bunnies would go after the kale. I start to see some green stalks growing in the areas where I'd put garlic. Not enough. Hrm. A few weeks ago, I realized those green stalks were actually weeds. Not garlic. There is no garlic. Some varmint or other absconded with it all. The kale was just fine, thankfully. Actually, if anyone wants to come over, I can totally host a salad party because there's more than I can handle!

Some years ago, I just bought grocery store garlic, and did not know anything about hard neck or soft neck etc. I have had hoards of garlic anytime I want some. A friend gave me elephant garlic a few years ago, and it is good too. And the Egyptian walking onions are doing fabulous... I have other onions also. I am trying leeks this year, so far they look like green hair. My chives are great... Last year I had a large wheelbarrow full and a large box. I shared it with lots of friends.

Had a weird issue with my fall planted garlic(only 2 plants) this time. They sprouted quickly and survived the 17F winter and didn’t die back in the cold at all. However, from the frost onward, the garlic was fused into one solid stalk. Like imagine how a bamboo grows - one thick stem with no offleafing. It didn’t grow taller, only slightly thicker, and looked very sick. In late spring I manually tore the leaves open(like tearing apart string cheese) to see wtf was going on inside and found that MULTIPLE leaves had been trapped inside the outer ones, crushed and coiled tight like springs never able to emerge. This is gross, sorry, but it was like the garlic leaves were ingrown hairs inside the outer leaves, it was the darnedest thing. Anyways basically I’m here to soak up all the garlic knowledge I can for next time. 😂 gonna be going back through your and Jacques’ garlic vids! One day 🤞

For emergencies and natural disasters Garlic-shaped dream house …etc The vast garlic fields I think that's the Guardians' grand dream.🛡🗡️ The garlic in this video is like a crystallization of earth and sweat. Apparently professionals use horse manure and straw to pile up the soil when growing vegetables, but do you have any horse manure nearby? 🐎💩🙄💩 Even if you bring a horse, you still need to feed it carrots, so you can't fail to make carrots, and so on.I've been thinking about horse poop since the day before yesterday.

It depends on your zone, please don’t get frustrated when you see others harvesting plants “early” in the season. I live in Long Island, New York , zone 7B and planted the garlic last October 2023. I just harvested a few today. Still have three containers of garlic that isn’t ready to harvest yet. Possibly later in July. So only go by your zone to determine harvesting time. Happy Gardening all! 😊🙌🏾❤️
