I knew it was too early yesterday when I saw farmers harvesting a field. It’s always closer to when school starts but on my drive to work all the corn fields are dry as a bone and ready. That’s some pretty corn there.

Danny, Just a quick tip on drying small amounts of corn. My Grandpa always used a 4 ft 4x4 post with an eye bolt in one end to hang from rafter with a wire. He would place a row of 16 penny nails down each side of the post. Then cut off the nail head with saw or pinchers then then pull shucks back on corn and stick stem end of corn on nail and let it dry. Keeps mice away from corn and air can flow around ears.

Early yes, but still good corn, what I find interesting is people growing native corn's more and more these days, its great. Thanks for sharing.

Heavy rains here with high heat. My hay crop is twice as tall this year. Praying for extra harvest to stock up. Beautiful crop of corn there.

Danny and Wanda we are praying that the weather improves in your area. We have been experiencing very dry hot weather with horrible humidity at times in the feel like temp of 110 degrees. We are not use to this weather as we live of the Great Lakes on Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. We believe like you that the lord is coming soon. The world seems to be a world of extremes, weather, violence, economy issues, fuel prices. Right now we are paying 138.9 cents a litre for regular gas. When this is converted to Gallons we are now well over $6.00 a gallon. That's crazy when the barrel of oil is at one of its lowest prices ever. Anyways it's not about the negative things in life. We still feel very blessed when we hear of other tragedies in this world. Our prayers and thoughts are with you both. May God richly bless you for sharing his word with the world through your ministry on You-Tube.

Yep the zone change has started. The equator has changed. Everyone needs to be diligent about their Garden check it often. Planting is going to be different next year. Danny have you ever heard of people planting in jugs closing them up, then putting them out in the cold. Each one being its own Greenhouse? I have watched and talk to some people that has done this. They said it allows them to plant their plans a little earlier. Once it is warm enough they then open the jugs and plant the plant inside into the garden.

So glad to hear you caught that, sounds like in the nick of time, to be able to harvest and not lose it. That's some beautiful corn!!

Muscadines will be next. Some of mine were getting ripe last year in August. Beans, peas, okra will sprout also if it stays too wet .

This is the best yield of corn I've ever planted. My Cherokee Original white flour corn is on 15 ft. stalks,and 1/3 on the way to dry enough to hang. The Cherokee Gourdseed has ears the size footballs all pointing South. Since April,we have had 30 inches of rain. That's most of a year's worth for this dry part of the state.
@33none426 жыл бұрын
it's been 10 F below average all of July.

Ain't that a kick in the head? The way the weather is, if only it could harvest and shuck the corn for you, you would have it made. Between the extreme heat, harsh sun and the critters, I am hoping that a winter crop will be better than my summer crop.
@cofoothills6 жыл бұрын
wow - thanks for giving us the heads up about the environmental changes you're experiencing; corn that early is odd

Between the heat and humidity up here in Iowa, I thought I was gonna lose my tomato plants and Pepper plant. They look pretty spindly, but their stating to come around. Watering them 4 times a day. Cherry tomatoes are going decently-not as sweet as they should be, and my old German finally has a few green ones popping up.

Is this the first time you have planted these varieties of corn? How is your Danny corn doing this year? (I don't remember if you planted it this year or not)

MotherOfManyHorses This is my first year growing this variety of corn. I did not grow any Danny corn this year didnt want any cross pollination with it.

Am so sorry this is happening to you. God must have been watching over me this year. I planted waaaay earlier than usual and the corn just took off, I harvested it last week and it was perfect. I must tell you tho that the stalks were very short, only about 5/ft, and the ears only averaged 6/in, small for here in Tennessee for regular old sweet garden corn. But very sweet and delicious. The seeds I got from Burpee (Bi-licious Hybrid) LAST YEAR!
@mitchh91116 жыл бұрын
Is it just those varieties that take less time to mature? It's a shame you haven't any of your normal 'Danny corn' growing this year so you could really see how the weather is affecting the timeline of the ripening of its cobs.

does the field corn need to dry on the cob a certain length of time before it's ground up?
@essemsween8186 жыл бұрын
I know it's weird but at least there's been some Sun this year rather than rain, rain and only rain like last year. That really is pretty looking corn on it's cob isn't it? Is that "Sprout" a root that would produce more and would it grow if planted or is it a sort of stem that will grow more leaves?
@creinicke10002 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you have newer corn clips.. but I would like to ask you about nixtamilation of corn? I just watched a clip about long term storage of food.. and he said to make sure the corn you store has been nixtamilized(sp?). I looked it up.. it's a living processing of the corn? Supposedly this needs to be done for cornmeal to make it edible and nutritional anticipation together for cooking. I'd love your opinion and info on this since I never heard of it before. Even though I'm not a homesteaders ( city living) I thought info might help others.
@DeepSouthHomestead2 жыл бұрын
It raises the nutrition value but not necessary.

Becky Hudson yes you can eat it. Dried corn can be ground up for flour or rehydrated later ( to a point not completely.) Made into corn grits or corn pudding.
