You know, peppers are actually perennial. If you prune that pepper plant back, dig it up and pot it, then bring it in for the winter, it will be beautiful next year. I have several different types of peppers that are four and five years old.
@mistymountainmiss3 ай бұрын
Do you plant them back into the ground each Spring?
@coffeeinthegarden59943 ай бұрын
I do the same with most of my pepper plants and it allows me to have mature peppers a little earlier..lol
@kimjohnson57423 ай бұрын
I've done this, too. It would be wonderful to see next season.
@leaholifield80523 ай бұрын
@mistymountainmiss You can. I just left mine in the large pot after the first potting, and moved them outdoors in the spring. I repot them every couple of years. You have to prune them back pretty severely. There are plenty of videos on KZbin that will show you how to prune them back for the winter.
@leaholifield80523 ай бұрын
@coffeeinthegarden5994 Yep. It also allows you to grow hybrids without having to purchase seed every year.

I always like the late season, red jalapeño peppers, best. Mine seem to have thicker and meatier walls with a little more fruitier flavor, in late season. I cold-smoke them for a couple of days in our old smoke house, and let them dry. Excellent in chili powder. In winter, I cure and cold-smoke pork bellies for bacon. ALWAYS use my dried jalapeños in the brine, and added to the hickory smoking wood. I only smoke bacon on the coldest days (below 20 degrees) to offset the heat from the smoke. I have a separate firebox that also helps keep temps low. (I never let the smoke house get above 36 degrees)

My scientific assumption this year especially whatever the fazes the sun is going through it seemed brighter this summer. I put sun shade cloth over my tomato plants and they did great compared to past few years. I had peppers that got shaded and they did great, the rest seemed like they suffered and did lousy. I'm shading pepper plants next year.
@louhollar73513 ай бұрын
Yes, my shaded tomatoes did so much better than my direct sun ones. I have some Asian bell peppers that have been doing great since cooling off.

Get some milk to cut the heat. ❤ I love Mrs H, but you both need to know that I'm watching and I'm saying " don't take a tiny one! Don't do ittttt!!" Mrs H... you're a little stinker! I think you set that sweet man up. The sounds he was making off camera while you were talking about the peppers was pretty funny. Poor guy - clearing his throat, whooo-ing, so stoic while his lips burn & quiver. Ya gotta love him! I'm sorry you had to go thru that on camera Mr H, but I'm happy for you for the "real poppers" that she'll make you later. It'll be worth it & we'll all want to see them & hear your review of the finished product. But get MILK ready - NOT water.❤❤❤ Bless your heart! Cute couple... you remind me of my late husband & I when we were young. We had such good times together. I had several jalapeno plants that produced mini peppers this year. I started getting these peppers back in July. It was the hottest tiny jalapeno I ever ate. My daughter laughed at me. After eating 2 of them I had to go cool off, sweat city from those peppers. I did save some seeds from that plant for next year. I noticed mine looked like a bush with a small tree trunk. I cant remember where I got the seeds from. They turned out to be the smallest jalapeno poppers. I definitely recommend this jalapeno plant. I actually dug up one plant and placed in a container and prepared it for winter inside so I can get a jump on growing season next year. Happy eating y'all ~ enjoy. Made the best cowboy candy and Jalapeño infused oil.

My friend has pepper plants that she over winters in her greenhouse. some are 5 years old and produce great peppers. it gives her a jumpstart on her peppers by producing earlier. she put them in a 5gal pot and cut them back a bit. I was thinking you could have done that with those beautiful tabasco plants also🌶🌶🌶

Peppers are always going to be smaller when you don't prune the plant back to its largest center stem. Because, I think, that pepper plants are such beautiful plants, we just let them grow naturally. I only prune 2 of each plant. The rest, I take off the first blossoms, then let them grow naturally. Those peppers are always smaller, but more plentiful, than the pruned plants. They are shorter, bushier plants. The pruned plants have less peppers, but they are much larger peppers. The plants grow from 6' to 8' tall with large peppers from top to bottom.
