Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Music Superstar Jackie Evancho
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Jackie Evancho, is a highly popular and beloved singer-songwriter who became a worldwide sensation at the age of 10 years old when she dazzled television audiences in 2010 with her beautiful, angelic voice, on Season 5 of America’s Got Talent.
Since then, she’s had a phenomenal multi-gold and platinum career, with 9 studio albums, 8 of which went to number 1, 3 number 1 live albums and DVDs, 30 top 20 singles, 3 highly acclaimed PBS concert specials, and 3 EPs, including her latest EP just released, entitled “Solla”. She’s performed with some of the biggest names in music including David Foster, Placido Domingo, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and many more.
She has had many firsts in her spectacular career. She was the youngest top-10 debut artist in US history, as well as being the youngest top-5 debut artist in the history of the UK, and she holds the record for being the youngest platinum selling solo recording artist in history. Her albums have been on the Billboard Charts for a cumulative total of more than 500 weeks. She’s performed at the top concert venues in the world, and she is also the youngest person ever to give a solo concert at Lincoln Center in New York City.
And now, at the age of 24, our guest has moved well beyond her life as a child prodigy, and has evolved into a mature singer-songwriter, expressing her unique brand of creativity and artistry by telling her truth musically, most recently by collaborating with Smash Mouth’s founding member and principal songwriter, Greg Camp, who produced her most recent EP, “Solla”.
Throughout her career, music critics from around the world have been falling over themselves searching for the appropriate superlatives to describe our guest’s amazing voice, using words like “magical”, “miraculous”, “flawless”, “celestial”, “superhuman”, “angelic”, but I think Gia Tolentino of The New Yorker magazine said it best when she described our guest’s voice as “supernaturally blissful”.

Beautiful inside and out, with a refreshing honesty of her journey through the labyrinth of the music industry. Jackie's music is on a level only a few have occupied, and I will never get tired of hearing not only the near-perfection in her voice, but the heartfelt messages in the lyrics. We are privileged to be able to be a participant in this musical and personal phenomena. Thanks, Harvey for this interview, and to Jackie, of course, who agreed to appear.

I’ve been a huge fan of Jackie’s since she first captured our hearts on AGT. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to have her on our show. A real “pinch me” moment. But I wasn’t expecting a real friendship to be formed - and yet that’s exactly what happened!! Jackie is the daughter I always wanted. I think you can feel the love in this interview. Jackie has not had an easy life (no child star has), and given the brutal realities of the music business, she’s not having an easy life now. But her loyal fan base (which obviously includes me) will always support her.

I have enjoyed her performances since 2010 when she first appeared as an amazing preteen voice, and by age 11, her voice was so complete she was an amazing voice of ANY age. I watched her vocal growth through her teen years, her movie appearance and an impossibly long list of special events. Performing as Kitty on The Masked Singer was key to what has followed, because it seems like her breakout from a Shirley Temple sort of life. Behind the scenes she has had many of the ups and down of adult life where not everything is all smiles, butterflies and puppies. As a grandfather of two young ladies of Jackie' age, I've come to expect her to try new directions and start showing her own judgements. Based on what I see, she's making good progress and I expect to see her transition several more times. Butterflies only transform once. Young adults keep transforming well into their 30's. It will be worth watching her as she takes new and newer directions. At least she is living and growing each year and NOT living the same year over and over.

It was the KZbin submission of her concert performance of Panis Angelicus at age 9 that got her the live audition on AGT. Perhaps you mean that she made vocal progress from age 8 when she was posting home made videos on KZbin and recorded her first album, Prelude to a Dream.

Probably the best interview of Jackie I have ever seen, thank you. One thing puzzles me, Jackie had THREE of her own 1-hour solo TV concert specials on "Great Performances". They received record ratings, and one even hit the #1 spot of the music DVD chart. Yet, they are never mentioned in interviews, or most of her bios. Is there some kind of restriction against mentioning them in her publicity, or even talking about them?

This was an extraordinary and informative conversation. It's wonderful to see Jackie looking healthier, happier and even more beautiful despite her struggles. The topics you chose and questions you asked were on point and pertinent to her career development and her growth as an artist and as a delightfully humble and sensitive young woman who has endured many challenges. I'm impressed with your extensive knowledge of her career history. She is such a unique artist with a magical voice. So proud of her for what she has achieved and given to the world. I recall her having said as a child early in her budding career....."I want to use my voice to help make the world a better place". She has accomplished that in many ways. Thank you both for a fascinating and enjoyable interview.

Another great interview. I discovered Carousel of Time and The Debut through this interview. I had already had several earlier cd's. But I think these two showcase the utter greatness of her adult voice. I can't stop listening to them. I did not like her newest Solla. I found it over produced, not melodic, doesn't do her voice justice. But I understand her need to discover herself. I question the advice she currently is getting including the pseudo sexualized way of dressing. As I watched the interview, I wondered if she was anorexic and discovered later through a web search that she was. I hope she finds and makes peace with her true self and doesn't allow anyone else to define her and her singing. But I suspect she has a challenging journey ahead and I hope she is able to heal. The interview was so skillful that I could sense her current distress. She is truly one of the greatest on the planet...it is impossible to imagine how her child self, navigated her worldwide celebrity. And how that affects her sense of who she is today. Your interview was gentle and compassionate.

No one is advising Jackie. Her management/label allows her the creative freedom she demands and supports her work. She dresses the way she wants, and no one defines her or her singing. Solla is entirely written, composed and co-produced by Jackie about her health and personal struggles. It is a "brutally honest" (her words) and courageous album (EP). She is absolutely adamant about being her "authentic self" expressed through her music, and her intention is that others will relate to her lyrics and know they are not alone in their own struggles, whether it's mental illness or personal relationships. The songs are not meant to showcase her vocal prowess. For herself, Jackie considers songwriting a "therapeutic endeavor" and an essential part of her healing process. She has something to say and is putting it to music for the benefit of others as well as herself. Jackie said in an Instagram video, "My goal for the future is that the majority of music you hear from me will be my own, because that's where the true passion is for me.... Writing and releasing my own music is something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember". But, it had been stifled by the demands and pressures imposed upon her by the industry as a classical crossover cover artist to do what she was told, to sing what she was told and the way she was told. Now, as an independent artist since age 18, she is finally doing what she really wants to do for herself. And she says, "I don't need everyone to like me or the way I look ". Listen to the lyrics of "Get Out of My Life". Presently her music is in the Alternative pop genre because as she said, "it's the way I write". But she will not be limited to any particular style, saying it may later turn out to be classical or even opera depending upon how she is inspired. Time will tell what she comes up with next.

Oh please Jackie! Don't EVER us America's Got Talent type things to measure your talent. It's a for profit cattle call, an opportunity for the judges to be seen and run their big mouths. You have a gift, I have 2 of your albums and I;' retired, a fo'rmer instrumental music teacher, and I get away with singing in nursing/senior homes for money and fun. Not to worry. For Jackie, her appearance on AGT Champions was for the fun of it and the comradery, not necessarily to compete, as she had said some time ago. She is extremely grateful to AGT for having initiated her career and has a nostalgic attachment to the show. Actually, she was invited to perform for the Champions Finale as guest performer, singing "Somewhere" to promote her latest album at the time, The Debut. Her "audition" performance of "Music of the Night" from her second album was more a token performance than a serious attempt to compete. Jackie has a unique connection with AGT in having been guest performer more often than any other past singer contestant, considered it's prime representative because of her success. It has served as a platform for promoting her albums and career. Her first guest performance, by indirect invitation from Simon Cowell, was "Nessun Dorma" from Dream With Me on Britain's Got Talent at age 11. That was followed by another performance of "Nessun Dorma" on AGT. At age 14, she performed "Think of Me" from her third album, Awakening. At age 16, she performed "Someday at Christmas" from her album of the same title for the AGT Christmas Special. Jackie took advantage of another opportunity to promote herself and gain exposure by performing on World's Got Talent in China at age 18. She sang her own Puccini Medley of "O Mio Babbino Caro/Nessun Dorma", and to demonstrate her versatility she sang "A Million Dreams", a song from the film, "The Greatest Showman", which is on her Broadway album The Debut. With her guest performance on AGT Champions at age 18, Jackie was apparently finished with AGT, having moved on with her departure from Classical Crossover to Folk Pop/Rock, releasing her Joni Mitchell tribute album, Carousel of Time, and now pursuing her career as a singer/songwriter/composer and producer of her own music.

SHE SHOULD BE PERFORMING EVERYWHERE! HER BOOKINGS SHOULD BE BACK TO BACK! Singing at Trumps inauguration should have been supported by everyone. She wasn't singing for Trump, but for the Office of the President. She sells herself so short and I wish she would break out!!! She shares the same net worth as Darci Lynn, another highly talented performer that deserves everything she has. However, Darci seems to be stuck in the same rut. She is a ventriloquist and that's what she does. But, she is so much more! she is a fantastic singer but she refuses to break out of her ventriloquist shell and just sing. There are so many venues that would be LUCKY to get someone like Jackie Evancho. The Smith's Center for Performing Arts in Las Vegas, NV. is one. Either Jackie is not confident enough to sing or the SCFPA is too stupid to have her! It seats 2050 people in Reynold's hall and It would be packed every night. They also have two other smaller venues and a jazz room but you can forget about those, they would all be in massive over-flow! I was so pissed that she didn't win AGT that my lamp became part my T.V. and I swore off AGT as rigged. Then she didn't win The Mask and I knew it was rigged! There is no way that she comes in second...ALWAYS!

You are right about Jackie. Unfortunately her career as an adult has not done well because she insists on singing and recording her own compositions, which so far have not become hits. She could and should have been the female Josh Groban but she won’t sing the songs that people want her to sing. She is also struggling with an eating disorder, which worries me terribly. Please pray for her.
@cl9786
@cl9786 Ай бұрын
" Either Jackie is not confident enough to sing or the SCFPA is too stupid to have her!" Jacki has performed over 190 solo concerts nation-wide since she was 11 years old, and in 10 other countries at the finest music halls in the world (most recently the Tata Theater in Mumbai, India last week). Recall that she is the youngest artist ever to have headlined Lincoln Center NYC with a solo concert at age 11. She certainly does not lack confidence. She remarked often as a child that "The stage is my home....It's where I'm most comfortable". She will be performing in concert on December 3rd with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at the Davies Symphony Hall. Jackie's primary interest is writing, composing and producing her own music as an independent artist. Her Nashville label, Melody Place Music, is very supportive of her songwriting endeavor having released her EP, "Solla", and before that, "Carousel of Time", allowing her the creative freedom she demands. She was under the thumb of Sony Music Entertainment almost her entire career. Sony was suppressive and dismissive of her input with regard to how she wanted her music produced. She left Sony following her 7th chart-topping album, Two Hearts, to take command of her career, her music and her image, releasing her 8th chart-topping album, The Debut, under her own recording label, JE Touring Inc. Listen to her original single "Get Out of My Life" which is a protest against "all those people telling me as a child that, in order to do what I love, it must be perfection....I must look perfect, sound perfect, speak perfectly, behave perfectly.....and that I'm worth nothing if I'm not perfect....." That pressure had led to her eating disorder at age 14/15 trying to measure up, in her mind, to impossible demands and expectations. You get the idea that she wants nothing to do with a major label again. Therefore, her future and success as a singer/songwriter depends upon her own efforts, with the support of her present label and co-producer, Greg Camp, pursuing it in accordance with her own vision and in her own time frame. She has earned the right and freedom to pursue and manage her interest in whatever manner she chooses, answering to no one. She says she is happier with her career now than she has ever been....."Thrilled" that her first single, "Behind My Eyes" made it to radio nation-wide, hitting #17 on the Adult Contemporary Top 50 Chart. She said in an interview not long ago with Lindsay Parker (Yahoo Entertainment), "When I make music, my concern is with myself and my fans. If I'm proud of the project and my fans enjoy it, that is all I hope for.....I don't have to have everybody's approval." She said in an Instagram post: "Classical will always have my heart, and I will probably always sing it, but it was (for me) time for a change...I hope you love both." In another post she said, "Writing and releasing my own music is something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember. My goal for the future is that the majority of music you hear from me will be mine, because that's where the true passion is for me". Jackie, in my estimation, is the most versatile young female vocalist of this century. My best wishes for her in pursuit of her life-long dream as writer, composer and producer of her own music. I thoroughly enjoy her compositions and anticipate more to come. Jackie would be pleased if some of her fans would stop telling her what they want her to do and embrace what she is doing for herself.

Now I have heard that the reason that Jackie lost, was because of her age, she wouldn't be able to take full advantage of what the winner of AGT would be asked of, in terms of concerts appearences and other events that the winner is required to attend. Otherwise she would've won. Now I don't know if that is entirely true, but I suppose it would make sense. Because her getting second, didn't make sense to anyone at the time. Especially Michael Grimm who was as shocked as the rest of us.

It doesn’t matter that she came in second. She became a superstar!

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Yes Harvey, I'm well aware that she became a superstar. That doesn't mean it ceases to be an injustice. It just softens it a little. Great interview btw. One of the best introductions I've seen.

Thanks Harvey. I have to say, I'm more than envious that you had the opportunity to speak with one of the most extraordinary people I've ever known. And having the honor and privilege to call her a friend no less. Very envious indeed.

Jackie's performance on The Masked Singer should have pushed her adult career forward several steps, but it was right at the beginning of Covid, which prevented any kind of public appearances. By the time things opened up again the momentum had been lost.

Exactly. She’s struggling because the vast majority of her original fan base don’t like her original songs. And she’s not acquiring a lot of new fans.

The nationally-organized, orchestrated, and co-ordinated attack on [then 16 year old] Jackie is one of the most appalling things I have ever seen.

Someday I'd love to watch an interview with the performer that embraces President Trump proudly and doesn't give in to the left-wing agenda.

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Ask yourself, what kind of people try and destroy a child for singing at a civic event designed for national reconciliation, just because they didn't like the results of an election? Right! The same kind that are so addicted to power and money that nothing is sacred and no one safe from their ambitions.

The national anthem performed at a presidential inauguration, a civic or sports event, etc is a tribute to the country. As Jackie said, "I got to perform, not for that president, but FOR MY COUNTRY". That is exactly what performing the national anthem means at any time or place, and by whomever in whatever manner.

Jackie Evancho despite some continuing fears did her nation and herself proud as one of the few historical inaugurations Anthem singers. Despite an attempt to terrorize all the performers, by some political reactionaries at the time. Backlash to performers who were not political then or now remains gratefully subdued.

I wish she would focus on getting well. She is an adult woman with a 10 year old body. It's disturbing how frail and how she looks older than she is. I've said it before many times unless she gets well she will be the next *Karen Carpenter* who passed away at the age of *32* . What a loss it would be for the world. Get Well Jackie. Put your health first.

I disagree that she looks older than she is at age 24. I think she looks great. And, she IS focused on her health, doing what she can under the care of a therapist. She knows Anorexia is life-threating and a can be a life-long battle. But, she is not going to give up the most meaningful thing in her life. She said songwriting is a "therapeutic endeavor" essential to her healing. Karen Carpenter died most likely because she ignored her eating disorder, even denied it until it was too late. Jackie did the best thing she could have done by announcing it to the public and seeking professional help.
