Just the other night a movie called "The Harvey Girls" showed on Cox 93 a couple nights ago. I thought about your video as the movie began. What a way to travel. First class all the way. It'd be nice to be able to spend a night or two and experience it.

Ah yes, the Harvey Girls, starring Judy Garland. Yup, that's a classic and brought the name Harvey House in front of yet more eyes. Most people don't know today know what the Fred Harvey Companies was back then and what they are today - Xanterra - operators/owners of so many places and railways.

@@BackRoadsWest1 I can't name all the big names that were also on the credits rolling by, but there were some biggies. The Harvey House is legendary for those they served. We'll never recreate anything like it again. Or could we? Instead of train travel.. air travel maybe. Or would it take too much effort, planning and more importantly money. I've said more than once I was born too late to have enjoyed some of the greatest things, such as this, and long distance train travel. Sure you can still travel by train, but it's not the same. (sigh).

Never heard of a “Harvey House” before. That tile floor from 1911 is amazing. Love trains - thanks for sharing!

Google the name. They once were all over the place. There are other well-preserved ones in Needles, CA and one turned into a fancy hotel in Winslow, AZ. All built by the Fred Harvey Company, which still exists today as Xanterra.

If you study railroad history you will discover that Fred Harvey operated the food service for the AT&SF first as station restaurants ( Harvey House) and later dining car service. The Harvey House operated long before the 1920's.

Been aiming to visit Barstow. Relatives live nearby in Redlands. Just purchased a property of all places, Trona too! So one day I definitely like to take a side trip here for sure to check it out. Perhaps during the Winter or Spring time when it's much cooler!

Brightline West not planning a Barstow stop seems weird. Leaving the I-15 median at Barstow to swing around the north side of town to use the existing station shouldn't be too hard considering how much of that would be over open desert land.

Am thinking Amtrak doesn't service the rail there. They may use it by leasing it and stop there to take on passengers as well as letting them off. Amtrak really owns very little rail track in America. Southern Pacific may own it and lease times out during a day when Amtrak can be on that rail.
@BackRoadsWest15 жыл бұрын
According to Amtrak's website, they still service this station. You can purchase a Barstow to L.A. ticket for $38 and it picks up at 3:45am. The tracks in Barstow are owned by BNSF. Amtrak actually owns quite a bit of track across USA, especially in the East.
@TheDrloboski5 жыл бұрын
@@BackRoadsWest1 I understand. When I hear the word servicing that means to me high-railing it once a week required by FRA and responsible for all repairs and make them accordingly. Other rail companies actually own about 95% of all rail used by Amtrak. Loved the video and I love Amtrak.

I worked for Amtrak the summer of 1988 just before moving from SoCal to Utah. We ALWAYS stopped here enroute to Chicago via SLC. It was pretty much derelict in '88 except for Amtrak's little corner office. I'm very glad to see it's been restored to its former glory (mostly). A lot of the big old train stations across America were nearly abandoned hulks back then. Kansas City comes to mind... In Salt Lake, there were two. They've been repurposed pretty much. Not entirely lost. It's really a shame we don't value rail travel in America like elsewhere. I used to live in Holland where I'd say nearly everyone (even car owners) find rail travel convenient at various times, if not always.
