I’ve always preferred cbcs over cgc, but the label and turn around time pushed me to use cgc. I find cbcs grades more consistently and accurately. With the new label, definitely moving to cbcs. Also, rather give my money to becket than blackstone.

I have said to many comic friends, CBCS grades are more consistent and accurate. I've seen too many videos of people resubmitting rejected books to CGC, with no extra work, and then they come back with the desired grade.

I’m glad you made a video regarding this, James. I decided about a week ago that I was going to pull the trigger and get four of my CBCS slabs re-holdered. One of the slabs (not the label) is CBCS’s older style slab, which isn’t as sturdy as their slabs from the past few years. Also, the book in that slab is a Signature Series 9.9… so I have to do it… right? Anyway, until the end of this month, CBCS re-holders are only $10, and $12 for magazines.

Honestly, the difference between the 2 companies is minimal, I like cbcs because you can send a signed book in to get signature verification , and never liked the fact that CGC wouldn’t even consider the idea , even after all this time , and all the demand for something like that. New cases just leveled the playing field . Do they get the newton rings too though? That would be the icing on the cake if they solve that problem.

Great video and completely agree. We need CBCS to step up and show the community that they’re just as good as CGC. It all boils down to the graders. Also, CGC recently opened office in Dubai. Does this mean they’re going to start using offshore resources to grade books?

I'm with you that I respected the last CBCS minimalist look. There's just no denying that the solid color made the label fade away and the book take precedence. I won't argue with value, etc, just I appreciated that it was different and looked very clean for the book inside. I'd like it if the new CBCS label finds some balance in the community.

In my opinion, CBCS has always been better than CGC where it matters to a collector. Especially when they got there new slabs a few years back. CBCS are the more consistent grader and their slabs are miles better than CGC or any other 3rd party grader. The core purpose of grading, CBCS are the leaders.....vendors/flippers like CGC because of the marginal resale value difference. I'm hoping the new label revamp will close that resale value margin. Great video.

I am in the same boat I liked CBCS old labels and they were my preference for submitting books to the new labels are ok and are still better than CGC. I just can't get over that floating silver blob that CGC puts on the slab. I also find CBCS way, way more affordable to submit to especially getting it shipped back to Canada CBCS is just way cheaper. Maybe they are close when it comes to books under $400 in FMV but once you get over $400 it's not even close, and the higher value book you submit the bigger the difference is.

My 1st submission was to CGC at SDCC last July. They were SS w/ pressing submissions which should have come back around October/November. Well, due to some sort of filing/clerical issue on their part they had to crack open, re-press, re-grade, and re-slab my books which they said would be complimentary. Then there were also multiple issues after where they charged me again for the re-press and re-grading. I would have to contact customer support after every charge. Due to the delay, they gave me $75 credit for the future. I finally received my books this morning. I might have to go CBCS going forward.

Dude this video was so accurate and relative to my personal experience. As a seller I by CGC, as a collector, I always go CBCS, never even seen a cracked CBCS case while I’ve seen too many CGC cracked cases, over generous grades assigned, and now the scandal going on with swapping books/labels. (not to say CBCS don’t crack regularly also, mileage may vary.) I think this is the perfect storm for CBCS to take over as the collectors trusted grading company while CGC tries to maintain their general population appeal before taking a slow burn to the back seat of CBCS success.

Been doing a now months long deep dive into slabbing as I catalog the collection (all raw books, nearly all 1st and only owner)... and the new slab has probably anchored me to CBCS. I don't like CGC's operation, I'm definitely not a fan of their upper management and what has clearly been a decline in leadership and craftsmanship. I agree with your assessment: CGC has more customer support because they need it. And not in a good way. In my opinion, the books I'd send in for slabbing will increase in value, either way; CGC or CBCS. What matters is that they represent a significant investment in both money and, quite frankly, sentiment. I love my lot. They bring me a great deal of joy. I'd rather send them to someone I have greater faith in. That's worth more than the money, to me.

I think part of the problem is the current economy. People are hesitant to make huge purchases at the moment. I know that will change, and I only have myself as a data point; but I do hear other collectors talking about slowing down. It's disheartening to hear the price is comparable. But just now on Comic Link, the first appearance of the punisher amazing Spider-Man 129, 9.8. Just sold for over $28,000.. how about the amazing sale November 20 of amazing fantasy 15 5.0 for $70,000 heritage auction. I keep saying when I look at the prices of the miles morales variant I cannot believe people were paying $40,000. They must be totally out of their mind totally insane.. you can get a copy of amazing fantasy 15 instead Incredible Hulk 1 the first appearance of Iron Man, whatever. Hot take: My favorite label for any collectible out there right now - PSA. Yes, PSA, the one that looks like it was made in Microsoft Word by a nuclear regulatory agency in 1989. That is a label that gives ZERO F***S about whether or not you like how it looks. And I think it's that sheer disregard for aesthetics that conveys the one quality that I wish I felt from any of the comic grading company labels - Authority. As a collector, buyer, and seller, what I want is to feel confident that my items were examined and graded by a sober, competent professional, and for that to be expressed via a small, unadorned label that looks vaguely reminiscent of my 8th grade report card. But what CGC wants to sell me is a tiny picture of Todd McFarlane's signature right next to Todd McFarlane's actual signature. I know I'm in the vast minority here. The market has spoken and it wants custom labels and color matching and exclusive this-and-that. And it makes sense why the companies focus their energy on that. Training staff is hard. Adhering to consistent standards and providing excellent customer service is hard. Changing the font on a label and putting pictures of Spider-Man on them is easy.

I have more CGC than CBCS by a wide margin. That is because of resale value in case I want to move something. That being said CGC is garbage. Their grading has been horrible in the last year or two. I recently won a 9.6 CGC book on eBay that I had to send back. A good closeup of the book in person told me the book wasn't a 9.2 let alone a 9.6. The seller didn't want to take it so I challenged him to having me resubmitting the book. Should the book keep the 9.6 or get a 9.4 I keep the book and pay for everything. Should the book go below 9.4 he keeps it and pays for everything. The seller wanted no part of it and took the book back. I've looked at several other books at shows and have been astonished as to how bad CGC has been grading. No consistency of any kind. That doesn't even count all the books they've damaged, cracked cases, and Newton rings. CGC is poop!!

I'm very confused why anyone would even care or pay money to a 3rd party that is just giving their own opinion of a grading its not like its been documented and backed up by an insurance company or copyright so its just a scam to scam people for grading, am I right or wrong?

Don't have to switch teams, I've been with CBCS from the moment I got back into the hobby. They are the only company I send comics to for grading. The only time I ever even buy CGC slabs is when they are drastically cheaper than CBCS ones, and even then if I think it would benefit from CPR then I immediately send it to CBCS for a press and regrade to get it out of that CGC case.

I do think the new CBCS label looks much better than its predecessor, and it also looks better than CGC's current label. I would have no problem going with CBCS. But I don't press & submit my books. Everyone that I work with won't go near CBCS, so unless I decide to get into yet another hobby (pressing & cleaning) that I absolutely do not have time for, then I don't see myself getting any slabs any time soon...but I would certainly buy one a book in a CBCS slab. But I gotta disagree with you on CBCS ever overtaking CGC. Well....I don't think you stated that as your belief, but I don't think it's ever going to happen.

New CBCS labels look great in person. But I still don’t like their certification number and letter combinations. Sometimes the B looks like an 8, and the 5 looks like an S, and vice versa. Also their grader notes search is buried at the bottom of their website.

I love the new cbcs look, but as a buyer, there is still the perception that cgc is the more accurate grader. Right, wrong or indifferent, buyers like myself trust a cgc 9.8 more than a cbcs 9.8.

The quality at cgc is crap I've slabbed over 75 books this past two years and the case issues and loose books they say they won't reslab ...I sent 3 books back 3x and they wouldn't fix .... I would like to use CBC's never have yet but I can't risk losing 20 30 percent on a sale :(

The new labels are nice, but the pricing is very close to CGC. So, I'd stick with CGC for now... especially if you already have a bunch of CGC slabs.

I’ve honestly lost all confidence in CBCS. Them making all those new cards for 9.9 and 10.0 necessarily mean they’re going to be over grading comics. I wouldn’t go near CBCS anymore.

Has CBCS "dethroned" CGC. hahahahahaha. That's funny. After what the Batman 1 CBCS 4.5 sold for recently, safe to say CGC is still the Action 1 of the comic investment world, and CBCS is a distant second like Tec 27. The look of the slab is important, but it's far from the reason CGC still leads in why books in a CGC slab sell for more.

Once the "old" crowd dies out.... CBCS will be top..... CGC is a horrible company and it has shown over the years it's downfall will happen. CBCS slabs are better looking and quality any how. :)
