It's always nice to look good on your bike, but ultimately what is most important when you are out for 4-5 hour rides is how comfortable you clothing is and how it performs in varying weather conditions. I have found, for example, that while Rapha clothing is stylish , it doesn't perform as well as higher tier Castelli. So I don't use it anymore. Thank you for putting together yet again an excellent video. All the best for the upcoming festivities and the New Year.

As ever over priced brands making mugs out of guillible consumers who will leap onto latest trend. Paying £150+ for a short sleeve jersey is madness. Wear what fits and suits your budget and is comfortable. That's it really. I still don't get what it is with some people who think that their existence depends on how many people they can attempt to dominate over such trivial things as what clothes or what bike others may have/use to get outside. Actually, that's one of the main reasons I stopped riding with groups . Might revisit that but, for now, I'm having too much fun riding on my own. Not saying that's for everyone. If you're someone who's always had a strong sense of personal style that will of course carry over to the cycling clothes you choose to wear. Some of it is expensive but you can buy in sales, buy secondhand, and get plenty of good new stuff on Ebay which is what I did when I started road cycling. I may be a London cyclist with a nice road bike who wears Rapha but I started on a £50 road bike 20 years ago wearing my gym clothes so try to avoid stereotyping us that way. And I don't agree that you can't mix brands, it's not that deep, what's important is that I'm comfortable with what I wear and I'm riding my bike.

Hi Federico, I live in southern Spain Altea, I'm half Irish and half Italian (Frank Miele). The pro teams have been here for a couple of weeks now training, they set the trends. You're right about the socks over the bib tights it started a couple of seasons ago. Big at the moment are all black bibs and tops with colarless gilet worn open of course! striking coloured neck buffs and socks as a highlight to the black. These are pure roadies. However, the gravel riders as you say wear muted colours with obligatory bar bag and tan walled tyres. I now wear Alé cycle clothing, it's excellent quality very stylish and reasonably priced.

When we first started racing cycling, we were proud when we could wear professional team clothing. Back then, racing cycling didn't involve so many shifts. It didn't matter whether the pants matched the jersey exactly or not. It had to be professional clothing. That also had its appeal and was of course much more individual than the current fashion. Not better, just different. This fashion thinking didn't exist back then. Because it was primarily just about cycling. Of course I try to adapt to today's fashion, but individuality is definitely missing today. Everything is more or less a so-called “one size fits all”. In principle it doesn't matter whether you wear clothes from this brand or the other. Everything looks more or less the same. I hope you understand what I mean.

These clothing rules are ridiculous. Wearing head-to-toe in the same brand is the equivalent of wearing Adidas track suits and trainers all the time 🤢. Those that spend a fortune on their look are the only ones who want to be judged (positively). Unfortunately, no one cares, especially non-cyclists. Wear comfortable, functional kit. Label envy and ubervanity needs to go. It makes the sport worse, not better.

The terms _fashion_ and _cycling_ do not belong in the same realm. Of course you can mix brands -- I do it every time I ride. The clothing I wear for cycling makes me more comfortable, and how it look is how it looks. I admit to enjoying all the various jersey designs, but I buy functional yet inexpensive ones with a focus on visibility and/or clever messaging. When I was a kid, I rode in cut-off jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt, and I was faster than most. If you're kitted out in cycling "fashion" and a kid dressed as I was blows by you, how do you look now?

Small wonder that brands who pitch a medium price, whilst still producing good quality products, are taking the top priced brands down. What happened to cycling being a sport for the everyman? Cycling brands shoot themselves (and the sport as a whole) in the foot by going the exclusive route.

It’s just a part of human nature. Unless we’re all forced to as a part of a dictatorship, no one is going to want to wear the same thing, at the same price, with the same name. Although I don't own any of their clothing, you have to applaud Rapha for being a style brand rather than a fashion one. According to the excellent book on their 20th anniversary, "The Extra Mile," it was all about an aesthetic inspired by the Golden Age of Racing so beyond clothing there was so much more: publishing, travel, organized rides, clubhouses, and events like the Women's 100 and the Festive 500. All the other recent pricey brands are just pale imitations. Cycling clothing should be comfortable and functional and it's your money and your choice but if you are paying 300 GBP for a jersey you should spend the money on therapy instead. Still, looking good is maybe better than being fast! Great video, Federico, but that socks-over---no no no. Also, if I wore all black kit I would be run over here in less than an hour cycling on the road.

I habitually do ride mixing, rapha and pas. Depending on the type of ride, I do feel going outside any respective brand allows more flexibility or specialisation. A well worn comment, repeated on an ongoing basis re pas is that they are an expensive “fashion” brand, rather than primarily cycling brand, and even, disposable fashion, Cf. cheap disposable fashion clothing one buys from zara, h&m, muji or latterly shein. The difference being, while those brands manufacture for peanuts, the pass on some significant savings to the customer, and then, if garment falls apart within a couple of years or so, it’s no skin off anyone’s nose. This is however the nexus of extremes that pas or others operate in, which is leveraging their aesthetic intelligence, regards the appearance of the object, combined with a product, which in terms of wear durability and robustness, is, off the top of my head, perhaps, a customer rrp at ~10X the price of manufacture. In one sense, it literally is the emperors new clothes, and they milk it for everything (or should that be, inordinately, well beyond what) it’s worth. The cycle of new releases every few weeks is relentless, for example. I want to criticise them, and I do, but equally, I can’t resist purchase on occasion either. I do believe too though, that pas will be conscious that now is :their: time, and connected to this zeitgeist, and that just as was observed with rapha, their star, like others, rising inexorably, for some time, will peak, and will fall off that peak of popularity, market appeal and esteem. I feel like pas are super conscious of this and, for the time being, are set on making their hay while the sun shines. The blurb about being made by cyclists for cyclists is a conceit and is a redaction of a more accurate description, maybe, made by aesthetically conscious, design talented cyclists, and, at the highest retail price to manufacture cost feasible, to the sucker cyclist consumers who will pay that top dollar for that product. But, is it, or any product solely the physical entity? Isn’t it a lot of other psychological value too? You pays your money, as they say.

I use a a cycling short and old longsleeved shirts from my time aa a soldier, when it's cold a vest I got for free from work. I don't see the point of being more aero when I won't get paid for it or want to do a long distance. Only problem I see is that I am wearing clothes that are meant to not be seen, so that is a bit of a security concern. That being said, I like your style.

I find the clothing trends quite overwhelming and intimidating. Seeing big groups wearing the same kind of kit looks weird and a bit cringe to me. There's a huge accessibility and inclusivity issue as well as a lot of these brands have a small range of sizes.
@lorjon68

If you find trends overwhelming just don't pay any attention to them. Big groups like to dress similar to increase bonding. All real cycling clubs have a team kit for example the same as in all sports. I think you are really overthinking all of this and the best cure for that is to just get out and ride!

I wear mainly Le Col and Siroko which are about the only brands that accommodate my body shape. Not the cheapest but can be purchased during sales offers quite nicely. I have to admit, some of the kit coordination is nicely done and looks the part but I for one cannot justify the costs of some of the kit prices. Maybe when I drop some 30kgs and can afford a 10K road bike, maybe just maybe.

The real value was when some brands just started, then the prices were realistic and good value. Once they become established rarely anything below 100 Sterlings. You can buy quality suit for 200-500 Sterlings in London! The same technology, the same fabrics, and the same quality. Buy just on sale, and in low season.

A bib shorts shouldnt be more than 150€, a jersey not more than 40-50€. Maap, rapha and all those fancy kits. Theyre all cheaply made in asia or south america. Theres no reason for them to be so much more expensive. Siroko, van rysel and ekoi are the best brands to get stuff for a fair price. Its all instagram that makes people want to buy the expensive kits. I do agree they look better than all the club kits or random stuff people used to wear a few years back. The modern helmets also look better than the over the top aggro “aero fins” helmets

I've spent thousands of dollars on Rapha clothing, casual as well as cycling stuff but last year I tried some ASSOS Winter garments and discovered they work much better. Rapha seem to always be sold out of the items I'm interested in, also there is the fact that they closed their US distribution and it takes longer to get my orders. I can actually get packages from China quicker sometimes. One more complaint about Rapha is with their Merino Wool products, I've purchase several items and every one of them developed holes after the first use. I wash my stuff by hand, not in a machine but it still got holes and for me I won't wear stuff with holes in it. So Rapha have almost totally lost me as a customer. Guess I have to shop around more for Jerseys because ASSOS jerseys seem to be geared more towards racing. I don't like jerseys that have logos and racing stripes that resemble stuff the Pros wear and I think the basic black looks good. No socks on the outside of the pant though. Not a good look. 😉

I´m guilty. I started build my own bikes on cheap frames from China and branded the frame on the downtube with "Kinakol" (Chinacarbon) just to annoy fashionistas and sneaky snobby riders. Today I´m riding S-works, wearing Pas Normal, Rapha and other brands I promised myself to never wear but I never judge anyone riding a bike. To finish it up, in the beginning I rarely or never received any greetings or the like from snobbish cyclists. Today it's almost like I've changed sides and feel that some who are now where I was at the beginning are almost distancing themselves from me because they have the same idea about the bikers in fancy brands that I once had. Believe you have to look beyond the lycra.

Not only is this fashion outrageous, I think they have gone too far with the prices for what it costs to buy cycling gear nowadays. it’s incredible what it costs for a jacket, a one piece outfit, a pair of cycling shoes, etcetera… Since when did the sport of cycling become a luxury sport ????

Good episode. Ironic but true. Especially when you pay a lot and become a moving ad for them (big bold brand on the kit). Personally, I prefer brands established since a long time ago, and with minimal branding (including Van Rysel bibshorts since they are quite good and well priced), black or iridescent shoes (easy maintenance). I thought all those kits must rely on one important thing: athletic P H Y S I Q U E. Why spend a lot and still look unsightly? Look at those Peacocks at Pitti Uomo, trying so hard to look clownish. Should L’Avvocato aka Sig. Agnelli have been a cyclist, he’d have worn anything he likes and people would have gone “ohhh! ahhh!” Ciao! 👌
