The “science” comes from testing bikes on drums which deforms tires differently than flat surfaces. That would be like extrapolating your data from riding 100% on a speed bump.

Just curious my man, why not 28c? I’m on 25c and can’t wait til next year on 28 maybe even 30c
@fede12752 күн бұрын
It is to achieve the best aerodynamic transition between the rim and the tyre. The wheel width would need to be slightly larger than the tyre profile. With the Vision at 25mm width, this is best achieved by a 23c tyre. Now I have the Winspace Lun Hyper R45, 27mm wide and I use 25c tyres. If you want to use wider tyres for more grip and comfort, to keep the same aero transition you need to use very wide rims. Some say they roll faster, same say they are less aero as the surface increases.

Great reviews, absolutely love that you show the helmets on and the information is gold. Thanks a lot! Quick note, I find those helmets are all more suited to someone with a small head, aesthetically that is. When I wear these helmets I find they look like they're just sitting on top of my head creating too much forehead space/visibility between front of helmet and sunglasses. I find the Abus/Canyon Gamechanger to be like this also. I have a large oval head and found the Canyon Airbreaker to be a great find/fit. Subbed btw!

Disagree that you have to ride a super slammed bike to go fast. A 300w ftp rider on an endurance geometry bike is gonna destroy a 250w ftp rider on a slammed race bike any day - the gains in the bike are always gonna be marginal by comparison. I'd go one step further and say a rider on an endurance bike who can hold their arms horizontally on the tops for hours is gonna be way faster than someone on a 130mm stem + high saddle to bar drop race bike who can't hold the horizontal arms position for more than 5 minutes at a time without back, neck, and shoulder pain
@tongotongo31437 күн бұрын
Yes exactly. Lower stack can even make it worse, because it forces to use steeper arms angle and that’s aerodynamically inferior to higher stack but lesser arm angle.
@fede12757 күн бұрын
Okay, let me rephrase it: if you are riding upright you will be inevitably have more surface exposed to the wind and your legs will fatigue more to achieve high speeds. If you can maintain a smaller area that catches the wind, you will be getting higher speeds more easily with less fatigue on the legs. Usually this is achieved lowering the stack and moving forward to compensate. Of course you can't do anything if you are uncomfortable. Low stack and long stems are not uncomfortable by default, the whole position need to be consistent.
@tongotongo31437 күн бұрын
It isn't that simple:). Lower stack doesn’t provide you a position with less frontal exposure by default. What it could possibly provide just steeper arms angle and more weight on your wrists. Besides that the femur angle plays role in generating power and fatigue. If you aren’t Matthew Van Der Pol or Pogačar riding aero bikes from the age of 10, most likely extreme aero position will make you weaker and slower. That’s why when you started riding aero bikes younger guys started to smoke you on your cafe rides.
@fede12757 күн бұрын
@ I could follow you until you mentioned someone smoking me on the rides...
@tongotongo31437 күн бұрын
I didn’t know that until you said that in your video. Cafe riders aren’t an indicator of anything. I just want you to ride as fast as it’s objectively possible, and in order to do that you will need longer cranks (180mm), and slightly shorter and slightly upwards pointed stem.
@cyclingunboxed7 күн бұрын

Your 54-40 front chainring will be a challenge on the steep climbs... with a chain catcher, I have replaced my inner chainring for a 34, now a (54-34), as we have loads of hill where I live, leg strength exercise I have recently been working on which helps.
@fede12757 күн бұрын
Wow, from 54 to 34 there is a big drop. I used to run 53/36 and it worked fine with an 11-30 cassette. I can still manage 40 in the front and 34 at the back, but yes it needs good fitness.

re: crank length. when i got my power meter magene cranks i went down to 170mm from 172.5 and instantly noticed the improvement with my cadence.
@tongotongo31437 күн бұрын
Yes, with shorter cranks you need to push with more power, so you are forced to use slower lighter gear, and then you have to spin faster,… This way your powermeter shows bigger numbers, legs move faster, and shorter cranks allow you to spin fast comfortably, all sounds good for a newbie coffee rider wannabe… Except your bike goes slower than it would with longer cranks, but who cares about how fast the bike goes, the most important are power meter’s numbers and cadence:)
@doctorscoot7 күн бұрын
@ but nah, because some rpm x some gear ratio x some outside diameter of wheel = some speed. Regardless of ‘power’.
@doctorscoot7 күн бұрын
Also note I didn’t make mention of my power output. I made mention of my _cadence_

“Some gear ratio”:):) There is a big difference between 50X19 and 50X13
@doctorscoot7 күн бұрын
@ yes but at *some rpm* do you not understand simple mechanical engineering? What the optimum rpm is for _any_ individual is biomechanical and dependant on that individual. There is no independent ‘faster gear’ or ‘faster crank length’.
