With regards to the Adidas collaboration. I just think each party had diffrent expectations on how this was supposed to play out. I also think their was an expectation that Mainline people would be primary consumer for it when the truth is it was the essentials crowd

Yeah you’re onto something. Adidas FOG became expensive Essentials, but without the additional value to justify the additional cost.
@skut92 ай бұрын
I absolutely agree, but also, I personally look at Yohji Y3 before FOG because of the creativity and detail that comes with most pieces. You can even argue that a good chunk of FOG Essentials found it's place in a mostly middle aged and older crowd (which isn't a bad thing at all, and I could be wrong)
@richardpye7492 ай бұрын
I've just picked up my first FOG Essentials pieces this summer, couple of tees and one of the football shirts. Completely outside my normal stuff but the price was really good and I wanted to add something a little different to my wardrobe. As with many popular brands and style in the West, they'll come in and out of fashion so quickly but JL and FOG seemingly got a much longer run than most. The pandemic was probably responsible for that but it certainly spawned a host of copies and imitations. Appreciate your take on this as always.

Essentials killed the luxury fashion appeal of FOG. However, they're likely making way more from essentials than mainline and will continue the diffusion line.

The problem with the mainline is that you have put together a full fit with mainline for it to work. Then it only works on a very specific shape of person. Product shots look great, reality not so great.

It's a good thing I watched till the end because I was going to ask what's the difference between Jerry style of design and Yohji's style, but you explained it beautifully. I was once also a fan of them but they got too bland for my liking even though I'm huge on Yohji but he does mix it up with color's and art here and there. Jerry needs to pop it up with a little bit of color and character. Even A Cold Wall adds color even though their storyline never seems to change or even their design language remains the same but their's character in their design. With the shoeline I didn't pay attention until you showed me, man's been making the same shoe😂😂

I take these topics with a grain of salt. It will always be ppl you can’t please. Some who can’t do what you do will always have the most to say. Instead just go where your personal style is and allow those who appreciate the design do what they do. It’s way too many designers to over critique one designer because they’re staying true to its aesthetic.

I I guess I'm in the fan category of FOG, but am incredibly casual fan. My style is based in traditional menswear (suits, pleated pants, dress shoes), so I never man on wearing FOG, whether mainline or diffusion. But I do check in on their socials every so often to see what's new, because I really appreciate their silhouette. And I appreciate that the colors remain consistent between seasons, because I think that's part of the point. Less focus on colors, more focus on shape and drape. And I love brands that are incredibly consistent, essentially just releasing iterations of the same pieces and the ideas that inspired them. Castalantic and Sillage are two examples of that in my mind.

Jerry was in his bag during 6th collection and 7th collection. 6th was a maturation of everything he was doing before, and that price point was still crazy for a lot of it but could be justified at least by the fact that it was unique. Its a lot of pieces from that collection that were distinctly FOG, and if you wanted that look you had to buy into the brand. 7th collection is when Jerry first introduced the idea of suiting and formal wear, and again it was cool because it didn't feel like a normal take on that style of clothing that we could go somewhere else to get. Like the slim trousers with the attached belt is still a banger. After that, I think Jerry got caught up in trying to fight brands like MNML that were making cheap knock offs of designs which led to him introducing Essentials as a take down brand where he basically started bootlegging himself. Smart in the short term. Biggest mistake imo was moving mainline FOG further and further into formal wear. How many suits and chunky sweaters can anybody buy? Jerry needs to get back to having fun like he did before 6th collection, but doing it with the knowledge he has now on how to manufacture pieces in high quality. Where is the sports inspired stuff, and all of his interests in vintage tees/art? Thats completely gone now

From a design standpoint, I think Jerry has been stuck at the drawing board since 2015/16 in terms of tweaking some of his minimalist concept designs that end up getting produced and still look like.....concept designs (if that makes since). Not a bad designer but very complacent and bland. and another issue that I've had with his style throughout the years isn't the quality, but the pricing and minimalism. I love good minimal pieces, but when you can find some of the same quality for a cheaper price WITH MORE COLOR VARIETY, FOG easily becomes an afterthought more often than not. It's gotten to the point that shows/stores that showcase mainline FOG have people walk right past the brand and go for other brands that provide more variety.

I wouldn’t even say obscurity. Reggie has mentioned this in his other videos, but staple Japanese brands are staples because of the sense of community the brand has and therefore the brand loyalism that the consumers of the brand have in return. If you’re talker older Japanese archive like beauty:beast, lgb, i6w9, backlash, then yes the name somewhat thrives on obscurity, but even then they also have extremely tight knit community and brand loyalism.

The issue i think with FoG (and most Western brand with a cheaper diffusion label) is that in fashion perspective the cheaper diffusion overshadows the mainline. We see this with Polo's numerous labels. CdG kind of fell into the trappings a few years ago when the heart logo was meme'd out in the fashion world. As someone who wears a lot of Yohji and grew up loving the punk/grunge scene - on paper, FoG is supposed to be my answer to my designated designer, but his mainline pieces are expensive and Essentials plays it way too safe. Yes, Yohji has diffusion labels as well but at least I can easily integrate S'YTE and Ground Y in the more high valued Yohji lines without sacrificing quality. Ultimately, I like Jerry and FoG but I hope he at least follows the Yohji approach where we can see a S'YTE equivalent to FoG where the brand wouldn't have to sacrifice design ethos. He's also at the mercy of marketing towards a Western market where experimental fashion enthusiasts are niche. I think he should do what Virgil Abloh did and test his market in Asia (like Hong Kong) then take steps from there.
