Thank you for this series Mark. I’ve been working with a coach here in the us, and with these video’s of yours have helped me play sub 80 in back-to-back rounds now. The stats and thinking that you’ve add to my game are MUCH appreciated!
@Mboogie69 Жыл бұрын
As a player that breaks 80 about 50% of the time, I find my biggest mental hurdle is getting off to a good start because my tolerances are so tight to hit the target of breaking 80 that it’s deflating to get off slow because it’s a lot harder to get shots back when birdies are not that common. The benefit of being a lower hcp player though is I know I’m capable of hitting good shots and have memory of them vs when I was a higher hcp and feeling uneasy over shots all the time and hoping for a good result. So mental game/goals change throughout progress

Absolutely. I really need to work on my mental game because of this . The margin for error is so thin , if I double bogey one of the first few holes I have a tendency to get a “well this round is screwed” attitude and it takes a lot of my enjoyment out of the day . Maybe I should see a “ golf therapist “ ,😂.
@Mboogie69 Жыл бұрын
@@lakedog3616 I hear you. Lol. Although, I have got a lot better at not letting a bad score/round ruin my day on the course. Ultimately, I’m the only person that cares about my score, but they care about my company.
@TramSpotter649 Жыл бұрын
It seems your first mistake (mental hurdle) is thinking your "tolerances are so tight". It is actually a negative thought. Even very good rounds include poor decisions and poor execution of shots - so the tolerances are not really that tight - after all, you are allowed to get up and down from time to time, and sometimes even sink a long putt. It is better to think that today is a new adventure and let's see what I can do with this shot; this hole; into this wind; in this weather etc.

One of my best rounds and lowest scores, 2 over, started off with a double bogey. You have to stay in it, one shot at a time, and keep pushing.

I think watching your videos over the years and learning to manage expectations has helped improve my mental approach too. My last round I 3 putted 4 of the first 6 holes because I showed up right before tee time and didn’t practice putting and they were all 40+ ft first putts. Let my frustration out and reminded myself that was a result of my tardiness and statistical variance and proceeded to shoot my season best score by 2 shots still!

Great series on breaking 80 Mark. It’s perfectly pitched (for me) as I am regularly shooting low 80’s but only very occasional high 70’s. Desperate to get to the point this statistic reverses. I have to say the mental side is my weakness and all the points you make resonate. A lot of your recent work has been the best you’ve ever done and I, for one, really appreciate your hard work.

Remember…. Your golf score doesn’t define you, as a person. The way you carry yourself DOES. Don’t take it so serious. Golf is hard. Learn to laugh off a bad shot, and just enjoy the day with your friends. I’m near scratch, and I had several rounds in the low 80’s this winter. I realized that bad weather, bad lies, horrible greens, and too much clothing makes it very difficult to score. Now that all of those variables are starting to get better, I still realize that I’m gonna hit some bad shots, and even have some bad rounds. After years of playing this game, I’m ok with that.

I played a medal today and lost my head on the 3rd as I left yet another wedge shot 10 yards short of the green. Threw my toys all over the place and lost interest in the round after making a double. Shot an 88 off 7hc. Ridiculous now I think of it but in the moment I feel so much pressure not to mess up. 🤦♂️

This aspect of the game has been huge for me. I've never been a good golfer. Never taken a lesson, and for years have made the same mistakes over and over. Struggled with consistency. Despite that, my expectations were through the ROOF for insane reasons. I used to be a real rager, getting so angry at myself and cursing my existence. Looking back on that, I am embarrassed for myself and for whoever witnessed my behavior. No more. I have made the conscious decision to enjoy the game no matter what happens. My actual score may or may not have improved despite this effort, but I'm actually enjoying myself more and remembering the good shots more than the bad. It's a VERY important part of the game and I agree with you that it is not discussed enough.

One of the things in golf is there is only one person to blame and it’s yourself. I try to take the rough with the smooth, plenty of times a poor strike actually turns out ok, I try to remember that if I then get shift bounce. I’d like to think I never play / behave in a way that it soils another players game or their enjoyment.
@samuraichicken9248 Жыл бұрын
@@guyr7351 It's also key to remember that you cannot control the outcome, only the process. You could hit the drive of your life, only to hit a tiny bare spot on the fareway and bounce into woods. Can't be too upset if that happens! 😂

I would also add a shot from 100 yards that you cant see land. it might look good in the air and on line but don't expect it to be witihn 6 feet when you get to the green. It might be 25 feet away or in the rough. Try not to get too disheartened and lower expectations.

Mark, should we include a hat spin as part of our pre shot routine?!! LMAO!! Love your channel. Question for you coming from a mental midget...how do we not allow slow play to affect your game. I find that if I am waiting on nearly every shot and especially a prolonged time throws off my tempo...but it may just be between my ears. I find that slow play is the MOST consistent of my mental detractors.

Whats the max handicap that you think should be shooting in the 70s every time out of curiosity?
@gtsimmo1 Жыл бұрын
Seeing as PGA tour pros will still shoot in the 80s and miss a cut such a handicap doesn't exists. We can all have bad days or just have brutally horrible conditions. However, to consistently score in the 70s I'd say 3 at most. Remember that handicaps are calculated from the best 8 of the last 20 rounds. I'm at 6 so my better rounds are in the mid 70s and bad rounds are mid to high 80s. My true average of the last 20 rounds is actually spot on 80, so at a 6.handicap I'm actually shooting in the 70s less than half the time (average is skewed because of the worst rounds0.

Totally do this. Have played a par front 9, looked at the 23 Stableford points on my card and promptly tripled the 10th. Did something similar the other day. Cruising after 6 holes. Sometimes starting out playing garbage helps out because you think the round doesn't matter and it takes the stress off. I went bogey-double-bogey in my HS league championship and completely stopped giving a $hit. I finished 6 over and in 2nd place.

@stuartmcinnes2903 Жыл бұрын
This has a huge impact on scoring but in my opinion there is more emphasis in amateur golf to get round as quick as possible rather than in the least amount of shots. In those situations it’s so important not to be influenced by others to hurry up if you’re trying to gather your own thoughts. It may be there needs to be a split in the draw of serious golfers playing after the social ones in competition. 🤷♂️
@markmaioli4 Жыл бұрын
Or could it be that the golfer who feels rushed is the one that is not ready to play when it's their turn and are the reason the others in the group are hurrying to catch up with the group in front of them ...🤔
@stuartmcinnes2903 Жыл бұрын
@@markmaioli4 Only relevant if the group has lost ground already with no reason. Taking time to reset when you’ve had a wobble shouldn’t take much longer than most other tee shots. It’s one thing being ready, completely another if you’re trying to get over dropping 3 or 4 on 1 hole and still trying to score your best for the rest of the round.

My thoughts have always been I cannot turn the clock back after a bad shot. Therefore concentration is now on the next shot, forget what's gone before. Take your medicine and don't compound what is ONE bad shot, by turning into TWO or more bad shots. Just play the next holes as you would within your parameter, dont try and chase the lost shot. Also!!! If its a course I'll play again....Then I know I should be able to play it next time in at least one shot less........Someone please tell Tyrell Hatton 😂
