I would have dropped XE naming, first gen was a disaster with drivers that never got any better. I bought a handheld 3 years ago with Intel XE and it was miserable up until games started requiring DX12 full support and refused to run altogether. While both Vega8 and later 680m were perfectly fine.

It would be nice if you could limit the RAM and power to be the exact same for a more fair comparison. Also Lunar Lake is supposed to be significantly better at lower wattages, so maybe that's where Intel got their "16% better performance". Still, it's great to have competition in the laptop space (unlike desktop CPU...).

4:16 why are there lines connecting the data points on this graph? those are discrete data for different systems: the lines would suggest to me that they are related data for a given system through time
@ZSchrink6 күн бұрын
The way I was reading it was that it was more of a convenience to see whether it was a big difference between two categories or a small one. Sometimes the dots are so close it looks like they're roughly horizontal, but with the line, it does make it easier to see if it's going up or down even by 30 or 40 points. I'm aware that the numbers exist, but just from a rough glance without having to read things, it gives that data for the small differences easily. That said, I do agree with the sentiment of your message. Disparate data shouldn't be connected.

@brandonchan5620 For months prior to launch they were claiming the M4 was going to be 4060 fast. Now that it's out, they're still in the comments claiming 3060. At $599 USD, it's a dead heat with $350 780M systems, ignoring all the compatibility layer issues that is...
@JohnWilliams-gy5yc6 күн бұрын
@@drewnewby Yes, you can find 7840HS TSMC N4 around $370 but it's barebone. M4 iGPU rated 4.26 TFLOPS FP32 which is slightly better than 12CU 780M. Of course, one can argue they can go with 7840HS with a little cheaper but M4 CPU side is way better if you don't need more than 16 GB ram.
@drewnewby6 күн бұрын
@JohnWilliams-gy5yc They're not bare-bones, but nice try. You cannot compare FLOPs between different architectures, amateur hour, do research. I've already compiled results from multiple sites and channels. The base M4 has great single core performance, but is behind the 7840HS in multicore and iGPU performance. There wasn't enough die space on the SoC for more, even at 3 nm. Do not expect the 16 GB to be enough, it's "unified" aka shared. Not good for any app or game on compatibility layer, which is most. Single core benchmarks, and Metal based tests are really confusing you guys, it's a shame.
