You are absolutely right about the bags and buying them from the artisan directly. Many companies do give ownership shares to their artisans. This one Megan’s gotten into doesn’t and I do not believe that they are paying the wages they say they are paying and then turning around and selling a bag for eight or $900. The bags are beautiful and now that I have seen them I absolutely will go on Etsy and buy a bag directly from the artisans because the bags on Etsy are just as beautiful as the $800 bags on siesta collective, which is not a collective

Many companies who don’t give ownership give in other ways too. They help the artisans establish independence by investing in them and their community. Just paying a few artisans extra doesn’t help as much as building a school, offering scholarships, building facilities like a clinic or store. Many companies instead of just taking advantage reinvest in the community. Definitely don’t buy from people like Cesta who are just using low wage labor to get rich. It encourages other companies to use people like this.

I'd love to see an investigation to make sure there's no child labor involved in these products, as well as direct testimony from the "Rwandan collective" members on what they are actually being paid. If the Wage, $350, is per week, then it is for the number of bags each makes per week. They would probably have to produce 'x', amount per day, peace work, so the more they make the more they earn. If they only work 5 days, and I doubt that, and they make only two a day, unlikely, they would be paid $35 dollars per bag. On ytube there videos teaching basket weaving, 2 hours to make a basket twice the size of narkles.
