That heat issue is tough when you have such a big turbo in a tiny engine bay, but man the sounds and pulls must be worth it 💪🏻 Rad video, felt like an updated-throwback kinda thing. Def dig it.

I noticed your jump staring procedure... Connecting the cables: 1. Black cable from donor battery minus to a clean metal point of the receiving vehicle. 2. Red cable from donor battery plus to the battery plus of the receiving car. 3. Start donor engine, start receiver. Disconnecting the cables: 1. Take off red cable from receiver battery. 2. Take off red cable from donor battery. 3. Take off black cable from receiver car. 4. Tack off black cable from donor battery. With this procedure you make sure both vehicles have the same electrical level of ground/minus before adding the plus cable. This is important in order to avoid sparks and/or electrical spikes/overcharge in the receiving vehicle and it’s electronics. Damn nice car you’ve got, BTW... -Me envious? You bet! 😂

Really enjoy the "old school" videos as you call them, LOL. I agree with you about the mods and I have stock suspension on my Abarth but I'm getting Bilstein B14's on my car come spring 2018. I'm looking at about .5" for the front and about 1.0" in the rear and that's it. I just wanna lessen the wheelwell gap a bit and make it feel more planted. I mean it's a short wheelbase car with 40 series tires but I know it can be better. I don't mind how the ride is now but at high speeds it's not as confident (I don't drive over 100 mph but up that way it's sketchy) As far as brakes go, well, when it's time I'll be getting better pads and new rotors all the way around, along with new fluid and that's it. I thought about a Wilwood BBK and while it's $900 for the front, which isn't bad, for how I drive my car they work just fine. Even my yearly drive in the Smokey mountains they perform great. I don't ever seeing getting a bit turbo like that and if I were to change it around it would be that middle one you showed us in the previous video. As you showed us, that turbo called out the clutch and it had to go, so one thing leads to another there! I mean the clutch will need to be replaced at some point but I'd rather wait till it needs it and upgrade accordingly. Thanks for all the great work Stef, looking forward to the future here 🇺🇸

Get the bc racing coilovers instead of the b14 Bilstein. They are adjustable, so you can set it on soft when driving around town and to firm when hooning it during a roadtrip. The saying about suspension is: buy cheap, buy twice.

@madfiat89327 жыл бұрын
Comments based on my own 250ish HP Abarth. Brakes: The rear is squirrelly no matter what on these cars. I changed to R1 rotors and Hawk pads and had a lot less fade when hard on the brakes. Not as much bite - bigger discs would probably help. Turbo: I have a turbo upgrade with a GTX wheel and it's similar to what you describe. Big lag down low, but once boost builds it is a rocketship. I would say the only negative with this, is it reduces the kind of fun that you can have in town under 40mph. You're constantly in a state of "Boost is about to hit ... and now I'm past the speed limit"... Out on back roads or highways where you can wind it out, it's a blast. But it constantly taunts you to wind it out. The stock turbo rewards you at much more reasonable speeds. I would say that anyone who does 90% of their driving inside the city limits should not change the turbo to a bigger one, or you will be constantly seeking out opportunities to use it. Suspension: From what I've seen with friends in the community, you're SPOT ON with the suspension. Everyone I know who has had coilovers basically hates the ride. There's not enough suspension travel on the Abarth to be able to go that low on coils. Myself, I upgraded rear shocks to Koni Yellow, lowered the rear springs just slightly, installed chassis bracing, and swapped the rear torsion bar for a 30mm unit, and that pretty much set the suspension to a sweet spot for street use while inspiring confidence in the corners. Better yet, when Hurricane Harvey flooded my apartment parking lot, I was able to get the car out before water got in - if I'd been lowered that would not have been possible (it was that close).... What would I do different in my own Abarth if I had it to do again? I would not go so aggressive on the turbo honestly... For the street, power at 3000 RPM is much more valuable than at 5500 RPM. To be honest.

+Alvin Brinson great insight mate!
@bsd1037 жыл бұрын
You can indeed fix the squirrelly braking on these cars. The rear torsion bar should have helped a little, but you also need to do struts up front (koni yellows work, crank up the rebound a little so the front end doesn't dive), lowering or "leveling" the car also f's with the braking/handling, it was engineered with that rake for a reason. The next step is to increase your rear braking power with either a caliper upgrade or with more brake proportioning to the rear, that will help stabilize. The front struts alone should make a considerable difference, and of course make sure the caliper slides are very well greased.
@bsd1037 жыл бұрын
Also turbo-wise the garrett 1446 that comes on the abarth stock in the US is perfect IMO. With a good intercooler and intake the car will make 250hp and close to 300lb-ft with that stock turbo and the power kicks in at 2500 with next to zero lag. Definitely don't want to make this car work to spool like you said - 3000rpm is more important than 5500.

Alvin Brinson I want to thank you for your input as I just got an Abarth two weeks ago and have been watching these videos to see what I'd want to do with mine. At the moment it is completely stock the only things I would want to do in terms of performance mods is lower it slightly maybe an inch at the most, get the horse power and torque up without having to switch turbos, and better brakes to handle all that. Any recommendations or things I should look at changing to handle those things please let me know I'll take all the help and info I can get!

Alvin Brinson also I have the 2012 US Abarth

I ended up buying a 1.2 Fiat 500 because I didn't want to worry about turbo, etc. But, the only thing that would change my mind would be having an Abarth performance in 'normal' Fiat 500 body. I think 'retro' look and Abarth performance would be the best combination.

As far as heat soak goes, have you tried using a turbo jacket and/or heat shield?
@StefABtv6 жыл бұрын
just need to find the right fit for my car. not sure it will fit as the turbo is so close to the chasis and it already had to be bent to allow the turbo to fit. the original heat shield area also had to be cut out to allow the turbo to fit lol
