With the Mr Beast thing, it's great that he's helping people. I think the problem people had with it was the video was way too short to cover the subject matter. If he had paced the video a little bit (maybe even made it into a short series of videos), he could've raised awareness of different types of visual impairment. Maybe even interviewed the people a bit more so that people see more of the human side of it. But because it's just 8 minutes a large chunk of the video is focused on blindness but not really the people behind it so much (+ their experiences) and counting down as people are treated. After the fact, he tweeted about how he thinks the government should help these people, it probably would have helped if he had included this commentary in the video even if only briefly. But that's just my two cents, happy for the people who were treated.

Mr. Beast is not self-aware and that’s part of what creeps me out. How can you do the surgery video and not be like “Oh by the way capitalism makes it so that if you don’t have money you don’t get healthcare.” It’s just a weird benevolent savior billionaire thing. On TMG podcast he said something along the lines of “You would do anything for money, every person has a price for any action” like deadpan and it was just unsettling

It’s business not entertainment. The monetization is what makes the money to do the things he does. You have to grow up and see how getting things done doesn’t require a huge show of political correctness. As for his emotional detachment, I’ve always considered there to be a possibility that dude is on the spectrum.

Agree with you both to some extent, and yeah he’s quite clearly on the spectrum. Goes without saying. Also, side note: I spoke to a guy at my work yesterday who paid £7.5k for that same surgery 7 years ago (yes, in the UK - apparently he had to get it done privately if he didn’t want to sit on an NHS waitlist for literal years). Apparently the surgery was really painful and worked for like 6 years but he can’t drive now as the lenses need cleaning up and potentially changing. He’s got about 30 ‘floaters’ in each eye stuck to the lenses which need vacuuming out again. So it’s awesome that the surgery exists but at least some of those people who got the surgery in that video are likely going to need it again in several years time.

To me, the thing about the Mr. Beast video is that him granting sight to people makes it very obvious how helpless people are to resolve their own problems because of how the system keeps them down. So, even if what he is doing is objectively a good thing it reveals people's own powerlessness which is painful to accept. Further, there is anger in the knowledge that the government could be resolving this issue but isn't. I think this is clear as there isn't this response to his other videos that are just silly where he is giving away money.
