📖 Here is the text from the ESV:
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now din the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

"God did not send his son into the world to condemn [my name here], but that [my name here] may saved through him" - absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing that! It REALLY hit me

Thank you so much! I have really enjoyed this Bible study. I really hope you do more of them. I love how you are going through them in such a meditative and prayerful way, instead of simply explaining the meaning of the passage. May God bless you!

I usually feel emotionally inclined to just skip over these and not “bother” with them, but I then I listen anyway, and there’s always something I needed to hear...Especially in this one. God as a speed-trap cop...yeah, I’ve been struggling with that for a while.

Blew me away, I was just studying this text, & to hear..."Jesus was left alone with her"...of course, but never thought of it as Him being without sin, as to why !! & a "caution"..rather than an impossible expectation, & in the midst...wow, still disciples there...I'm going to put myself in that scene!!!!💞💖🙏🙏thank you!!!

Matt, 3 of the Catholic Bibles in my home, do not use the word ,midst, but rather," left alone with the woman standing before him" & " with the woman still standing there"...harder to understand how disciples could be included there still, even though I found one that says " midst" ...& find that teaching intriguing...

In context..."all the people came to him"....so at first I assumed men for some reason, then on meditating...figured there were other women there too?? Thank you for this particular study @ this time!!!

This was a great bible study, thank you for the videos. The analysis that Aquinas gave, just of the world 'midst' was so motivational to meditate on Gods word.

Matt, because you’re not moving around a lot in the video, you could set the camera to manual focus if it’s capable.

In the entire study, there is no mention that this story (vs 1-11) is very controversial. It is widely accepted that the overwhelming evidence points to 'added later', and therefore: spurious.

Hi matt. The feast of tabernacles includes atonement for sins. That's the feast they were at in previous paragraphs. They had to write their own sins in the sand. [Midrash] the law required the man and the women to be stoned together. Everything you said is right just a 1st century view. The older people had done more sukkots and the atonement / without sin hit them quicker.

This was a pretty good reflection, since you did the study in a quasi Ignatius lexio style tho, I think you may want to go the route of St Bruno with the word study since you tend toward a Thomistic bent of mind.. don't you think?

Do these things: (each occasion) pray first that The Almighty Father opens your heart and mind to His Word. Then read/study the gospel of John (about six days). After that read/study the book of Romans (three to four days). Use a hi-liter to mark verses which stand out to you. Write notes in pencil. Let this be your beginning, amen

I wonder how the text in Greek would have informed Aquinas concerning the single word elements as opposed to the Latin.

It seems to me the saving power of Christ comes not solely from his death and resurrection, but from practical lessons like this. To be honest, if the only reason Christ came was to die and be resurrected (for purposes of fulfilling Old Testament prophecy), then there should be no reason why he was also a moral teacher. The saving power of his death and resurrection ought to be sufficient. Why, on top of that, give practical, moral teachings?
