While the optics were fantastic, the overall user experience left a lot to be desired when we first checked out the Pimax Crystal headset a few months ago. In the time since there has been quite a lot of work going on behind the scenes to improve the experience, so today we're revisiting by installing the headset from scratch on a brand new PC to see how things go!

I am so glad you reviewed the Crystal again, this latest video user experience was EXACTLY how mine was. I too laughed at the bad English, eye tracking calibration crashed once but everything else has been very good. Occasionally DFR with OpenXR has caused an iRacing crash a few times and sometimes the PC won't recognize the headset which is easily fixed by simply unplugging the usb cable and then plugging it back in again. Other than that it's been a really good headset. I also highly recommend the studio form comfort strap and additional headstrap back foam (Quest 2 back head strap foam works for it) which drastically improves comfort and stops the side to side wiggle. I hope you do another follow-up video with the wide FOV lenses once they are available (they are testing them as we speak). I think those will be a game changer that will separate this headset from the Aero.

Hey. The battery is super easy to take out if you don't try to push on both ends at the same time. Just do 1 side at a time. The one you got out first will not click back so don't worry. Also if you wanna test DFR just keep in mind that with the current update there are still some bugs. Like Minimum DFR is actually maximum. lol. Also the sliders to adjust brightness and contrast is broken and cant make anything darker. Only brighter ( when using all channel sliders. You can change individual colors tho (rgb)

Being new to VR, l decided to buy the crystal, it was a bit of a learning curve understanding all the settings, steam vr, pimax client and open xr, pretty simple once you understand it all though, loving it now, switched from windows 11 to 10 which seems so much better for VR, currently using steam vr 2.05 which has soughted a screen flicker l was getting in game menu's, bought the Apache headstrap which really helps with comfort can wear for hours now no problem, cooler also than running triple screens, the usb hub has made the battery a complete none issue, lucky enough to have 4090 PC l built for VR so sims like Automobilista 2 look fantastic at pretty much max resolution.. Think it will only get better 😊

Oh yeah VR takes a lot of tuning to get it just right. All systems are different and needs to be tuned to your system. Would suggest a couple things. First under the device manager's USB controllers. Make sure in the properties on them, on the Power Management tab that all of them have the Allow device to save power is unchecked. Also with a 4000 series card make sure the Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is ON. What games do you play on it?

Automobilista 2, Half Life Alyx, Resident evil 7 and ms2020 so far, have found having HAGS on in MS 2020 causes massive stuttering, no problem when off, thanks for the advice, will check device manager for the usb power😊

@@colinwright7242 I was also getting bad stutters when I first got my 4080. Found out I did not have the Resizable BAR enabled in BIOS, on top of that I could not enable it. I had the SSD installed incorrectly on the motherboard. I had to reformat the SSD I had Windows on, just to install it correctly. After I was able to get the ReBAR on and HAGS on, everything ran smoother than ever. DLSS also gave me the correct boost in games.

Great video! This shows how much they take reviewers seriously. You are to the point and honest. Nice to see issues dealt with as I have bought a used Crystal. The seller bought a wireless headset to replace it. I am into flying thus prefer the cable vs wireless. Also the FOV and image quality are important. I like to tinker as much as fly so plug and play vs plug and pray is a non issue for me. Sounds like Pimax is a company that listens and in it for the long haul vs the companies that dropped VR in the last few years.

Thank you for spending your valuable time on this for a second attempt! At the moment, the Crystal seems to be the best sim VR headset available, although many of the upcoming competitors will be catching up soon. The Quest 3 is already reported as being pretty close, clarity-wise.
@sirgriffinman
@sirgriffinman 7 ай бұрын
That is just not true. It's basically impossible for that to be true. The Quest 3 is a great device and is an improvement over the Q2, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to be as sharp and clear as a Crystal for many reasons. 1. Resolution is SIGNIFICANTLY lower on the Q3 that the Crystal. 2. There is compression over wireless and even over the wired USB C connection which will cause artifacts and a less clear image.

I've not finished your video yet but my experience has been flawless with the Pimax Crystal. My system MSI Z690 Edge, Intel 12900K,G.Skill 16GB DDR4, nVidia RTX 4090 - all watercooled) My previous headset the HP Reverb G2 1.0 is garbage compared to this one (I had to replace the cable twice) Visuals are amazing and comfort wise even with motion its fine for my head shape. One very important asset of this headset which is completely overlooked by every reviewer (not VR geeks) is that you do not need more than AA x2, why? BECAUSE the visual clarity is so good at 100% that you gain a lot of performance by turning down this setting. Baiscally you need x2 because it can clear or smooth the jagged edges. In every sim I'm able to max out almost every graphic setting @ 120Hz and 100% resolution. Even with ACC I get at least constant 110 fps *FXAA gen5 enabled only. Iracing and AMS2 work great at 120 fps and 120Hz with full resolution. Only rF2 is difficult as I'm not familiar with the graphics tweaks. I run the crystal with PimaxXR with OpenXR and not SteamVR. The only thing i don't like is the reminder to setup the room each time you reboot the headset.

I don’t understand all the complaining about the batteries. It’s so basic. I haven’t had any disconnects with the computer either. Something like that could be so many other things. It’s definitely not the most plug and play headset, but the complaints I hear are so general. Like, if the complaint was “dynamic foveated rendering doesn’t seem to be reliable enough in MSFS to give me an appreciable fps boost over normal FVR” then it’s something useful to read. General whining is so useless.

Impressed by the VR hype going around, I tried to give this experience another shot. Bought a PICO 4 on EBay for 300 € with the Geek stuff, and can’t tell how satisfied I am, especially for the price payed. Supposedly the Crystal will be better, but for 6 time the price? A more improved VR set has to wait for the RTX 5090 to be released. 😊

@@grzegorztomasiak I have had no issues with my pimax, but I also only just got one. It seems that with anything pimax they start out very rough and then they fix it in post. Not a business model I like, but its also why I waited so long to buy one. That and the vareo was simply not worth getting a new GPU for it given they only support AMD. Now that being said, going to wimwilms comment, no the Pimax is not really worth the difference in price. Its worth it for those who are at the enthusiest level, but not for the average person. For me, I do a lot of flight simming, and the VR headset is the cheapest thing I own for that process. Am using this in conjunction with with hardware to for flight training and the visuals are a very important aspect of that. I absolutely am enjoying this purchase, but this is no more worth it than a 1,000 dollar bottle of wine. If you are not into drinking or wine, a 1000 dollar bottle and a 100 dollar bottle will pretty much be the same. It would be a complete waist to go straight for the 1000 dollar bottle. Someone who is very into wine and expensive bottles would appreciate the differences. In other words, don't start out with a $2000 headset. Start out with a $150 to $300 headset and you will be blown away. yes the more expensive headsets are better, but they only marginally improve your enjoyment. My 150 dollar lenovo explorer I started with was 85% as good as my valve index was. Compared to the pimax crystal, the index is about 90% as good as the crystal and the lenovo explorer is about 60% as good as the crystal. Now remember that the index was a gen 1.25 headset, the index was a 2nd gen headset and the crystal and the aero are gen 3 headsets. A pico 4 is probibly about 95% tyo 98% of the index. You have a few tradeoffs that creem the index ahead, but the 2 should be very close to each other. So I hope this gives you a reference as to the value proposition. Stick with your Pico until the crystal resolution becomes standard.

Just got one yesterday. Started setting it up. Ran into a problem where the IR wasn't working for eye tracking. Pulled the lenses off like they explained and found one of the contacts missing for the ir, also the black background had bunched up in the screw hole for the lens and was damaged, making it hard to screw the lens back in place. Support was back to me next day with a response for the lens. They'll be sending me a new set. Another issue I'm having is my USB is going crazy with it. The two USBs from the headset cable to the hub does not work as the headset powers up briefly and immediately shuts off. Plug the 3.0 into the computer (2.0 needs hub for power) and got it up but getting random disconnects from other USB devices. And when I shut down the headset all USB devices disconnect and reconnect. Brand new PC build 13900k/4090/Z790MB/32GBDDR57200/1200PSU

There are several USB devices in the headset, so you need to know what USB ports you are using. It matters in which port you are sticking them into. Mainboards usually have 2 USB controllers, that are connected to different output ports. You can use a software like "USB Device Tree Viewer" to check how your USB ports are connected, and try to choose a port where you have controller that its not over utilized.

I still need to do more research (and I have plenty of time before I can afford one), but I keep going back and forth between this and the Bigscreen Beyond. Given what I intend to use them for (a couple flight sims, mainly XWVM and X-Wing Alliance; and privately watching 3D movies. Yes actual movies, not the "other thing") I think the Pimax might be more money than I should wisely spend, but it sure does look like a capable headset in case I decide to use it for more in the future.

I got a replacement one which in itself was a painful process. I'm still not happy with the replacement unit, the whole experience has been awful - I would not recommend this unit to any of my friends. Even today, the eye tracking doesn't work and I'm still getting the "Calibration Failed - cannot detect your eyes" message. This goes down as the worst PC purchase ever. Generally my experience with the Crystal has been positive. I came from the HP reverb G2 and what I am lacking with the Crystal is a better implementation of motion reprojection/smart smoothing compared to the G2. The headset is bulky and heavy as it presses on my face and nose, I have ordered the Apache headstrap to see if it gets better. The auto IPD works but what I find a bit strange is, that the measurement can change somewhat, I guess it is continous work to improve the software. I think Pimax should have scrapped the standalone mode, as I think they try to focus on too many things. People will use it for PC mode 98%. I don't think that the standalone will ever fly. Other than that great visuals, great audio, love the over the ear solution as with the G2, no issue with battery life as it is charged all the time. I think it is great that there are competitors out there that push the boundaries of what the headsets can achieve. Pimax should learn though to wait with releasing the headsets before they are out of a beta as the get a lot of grief before launch that is really unnecessary.

I think Pimax is deliberatley releasing the headset this early to have a lot of feedback. As they say: "The best testers are users". But I agree that Pimax should a least iron out the big flaws out of thier software in the future.

People always seem to complain about the amount of plastic used in VR headsets... what material are people wanting them to use instead? Plastic is used to keep the headset lightweight so it is comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. If they used thicker or heavier materials, people would just complain about how heavy it is instead.

As a Pimax owner I don’t think it’s reasonable to recommend them to the general public. The customer service is terrible, the software is buggy, and they require a LOT of tinkering to get things tuned in, and even more tinkering to keep them tuned in. All that said, the hardware and experience is phenomenal when it IS tuned in.

I was extremely sick in VR at the beginning. But you can overcome it. You need to try VR for couple of days, but take off the headset immediately once you feel something is wrong. Do not wait until you are really sick. After a couple of sessions you will be able to use it for a longer period each time. Now I can be in VR for many hours, and it is OK.

PS VR is NOT representative of modern VR. Frame rendering time and positional tracking is incredibly important for it to “work” and PSVR just sucks in those categories.

It all depends on the game ur playing, games where u use vr controllers and are standing up i get sweaty n sick after about 45 mins, the more u play the better it gets tho. In simracing like gt7 i can play in vr for almost the entire day 8+ hours n not feel even slightly sick.

I think the future of VR hardware will be micro OLED displays with pancake lenses. So, even though Crystal has the best visuals right now, it will be outdated pretty soon. Regarding tracking, base stations will be eventually replaced by improved inside out tracking by every manufacturer. My dream headset would need to have 4k per eye bright micro OLED displays with pancake lenses. Valve Index FOV, eye tracking and reliable inside out tracking. Currently every headset has only some part of it.

Before that happens engineers will have to find a way to reach good brightness levels and low persistence, two of the most evident drawbacks of micro-oled with pancake lenses right now. So no, I don't think that the Crystal will be obsolete "pretty soon", at all.

Crystal has 104° FOV so same as Index, clarity is the best on the market today. You must not be aware of small prototypes of aspherical lenses. The Pimax is bulky becuase they chose to keep the old headset shape to save costs. You can have the same lenses in the Somium VR1. And I don't have issues with edge to edge clarity. Pancakes have limitations too. In the end it really depends on your expectations and use case. Id' say if you are in for a smaller factor go for the big screen beyond but its 90Hz and a slightly smaller horizontal FOV.

Is it just me, or when I see something like “update successed” (note that it is also in lowercase), I immediately realise the company can’t make good products, if they can’t afford to a) find out a proper translation b) care enough about the users to start new paragraphs with capital letters, following the default, usual, commonly used ux/ui guidelines? I simply can’t even think about such companies/products anymore after I realise that either they can’t do that (no resources) or don’t care to do that.

When it comes to the company Pimax I´ve learned a new lesson: Don´t you ever preorder and buy a fresh released Pimax VR headset. I had similar issues with pimax just like you and the first one (Pimax 8k x) didn´t show a picuture anymore after using it for 4 weeks.I had to wait three weeks to get a new one and dealing with the customer service is just painful because i had to send them too many pictures which haven´t something to do with the damage of the headset. Just an anooying process which make ii for me harder than it had to be. But i found out that pimax always promise more things that they actually deliver on release. The missing features have to wait for a lot of months which is for customers who are paying for a premium product a lot of money not acceptable. We are not their unpaid employees for qualtiy assurance. And the things that they delivered are not working porperly which is a sign of a product that hasn´t been fully tested before the release. So I´d rather pay more for an Varjo Aeero which met my expections perfectly. Thank you for sharing your experience to us. :)

I have received my pimax crystal about 2 3 weeks ago so far my rating is 10/10. My first vr headset was the reverb g2. So that was great. However the pimax crystal is out of would amazing best you can buy in my opinion. For starters I'm a dcs vatsim guy. I don't play other vr games and don't intend to as I don't care too. That out of the way the only real issues I had with the crystal was setup as it took me about 4 hours to get it going. However I will take the blame for that as it should have only Been about 2 hours However I didn't allow thr batteries to charge fully before trying to use it so 2 of the 4 hours was my fault. As far as the rest of the setup goes. If you have any IT/computer background you should have zero issues downloading the software and getting it started to enjoy. Obviously fine tuning the settings to get the best performance can take longer However that is true with any headset or GPU. Second issue with it and it's one of those depending on the person However I like to have the headset on my head tightly. I make it so it don't move around when I play dcs and after awhile I would feel it on my forhead. However I was able to mitigate that issue by adding additional padding to help so no more issues there. As far as the size and weight go the thing weights what less then a pound more then the g2 so that's not really a factor. I could see how it would be a factor if you have other issues going on However I'm that case any vr headset would be an issue. As far as the size I like it because it gives off the vibe of a fighter jet HMD and that's cool 😎. As far as the visuals they are stunning to say the least. The experience is amazing with it. The first time I loaded on the deck of the carrier in dcs in the f18 it was stunning how great it looked. I did some pvp dogfights and missle fights and I was able to spot other players panes at approximately 20ish miles give or take 2 miles. I was also able to spot the smoke comming off the missles they lauched at about 20 miles as well. I could not do that with the g2. Stunning isn't the correct word However I don't know another would I can use to describe it. You just have to experience it for yourself. A through the lense video doesn't do it justice. The audio I will say this the base audio it comes with blows compared to the g2. The upgraded audio solution you can buy with the crystal that rivals the g2 and is very good in my opinion. Now onto the elephant in the room. The Pimax Crystal is expensive no doubt. I think I paid $1500 for mine give or take 200 bucks. I will say this you should only buy this headset if you meet these 2 requirements. A you can afford it without getting into trouble. B You have a high end PC that can run it without any issues. My pc has an i9 12999k ddr5 ram 128 gig. And a 4080. Yes I have invested money into my pc. If you can't meet option B I wouldn't recommend getting the crystal as it would be the equivalent of buying a Shelby cobra and putting an eco boost in it. You will not get the performance that its capable of. At the end of the day option A is negotiable as you can subscribe to the buy once cry once mentally. In conclusion the pimax crystal is definitely worth the price of admission if you are a VR guy. I use it for both dcs and vatsim and it's fantastic.

I've had Pimax Crystal now for 3 months and no luck. I have only been able to use it for 2 hours in total, somewhere around 2.5 months ago. Then I updated the software and it never recovered again. I even bought a new hub, no luck. It's not detecting anything at all. I think I am sending it back for a refund, this is not serious.

I'm afraid I can't recommend the Crystal (or Pimax) to anyone. For me it has been nothing but problems. In the end it turned out to be a faulty cable (a very common cause of problems as I have understood it). The worst thing is that Pimax don't stand by their product. From the conclusion that the cable was faulty it took two months of endless communication with Pimax support. They are utterly horrible. They don't speak/understand English, it takes 3-10 days between every single message in the ticket and they simply don't seem to care at all. After two months I finally received a working cable and I can at least start the headset. But know that 1) this is not a finished product and 2) Don't expect swift support or any support at all from Pimax if you buy this thing. If you have any alternatives - consider them - HARD. With that said, the visual quality is great, when it works.
