A chippy tea used to be a nice cheap treat. Chip butty with peas and a can of pop would cost 2-3 pounds. The same order in my local chippy right now is over a fiver easily. A fish costs 9£ on its own. I feel the prices of the food has ruined it. Well thats the case for me at least. If im going to spend £40 feeding my family, it wont be on mediocre fish and chips im afraid.

Coming from a Catholic family Fish & Chips was a Friday night staple pretty much! These days I don't think many even practicing Catholics stick to the "fish only" and no meat Fridays! I guess this must have had a pretty big impact on Chippies.... also so far far more choice these days!

Hey guys, so I had a little bit of a scheduling conflict so I decided to grab my phone and talk about something that I’ve been asked quite a few times. What’s the video? Let me know what you think, are more or less people going for fish and chips? How do you explain the perceived lack of popularity of one of the U.K.’s most popular takeaway?
@rapidblaze56649 ай бұрын
I also think another issue is that you got your local chippy charging you prices equivalent to likes of mother Hubbard and other big name places. My local chippy charges 5.00 for fish and chips and I swear they maybe using bird's-eye cod fillets.. so small fish. The food is nowhere near standard of mother Hubbard but it like they price matching them. I also agree I grew up across from fish and chip shop back when it was like the front room of a house converted into a chippy ..I remember it was like 1.40 for chips and fish back then 2 quid for fish chips and peas I get times change but nit that much where your average chippy should charge you a restaurant price

Friday was fish and chips day, even in a Asian home. But this younger age group don’t know about this, the chicken shop has taken that role now. It cheap and more assessable to the working class, where the cost of fish and chips have priced itself out of

Interesting video but it does show some poor trends as more and more takeaways go for high turnover low cost pizza and kebabs plus plenty of second rate Chinese. I think most places are concentrating on other foods like tikka, doner, etc rather than the classic fish and chips. Also the price of certain fish has gone sky high to buy from wholesalers and it's not cost effective for them. Also shops now doing meal boxes with a few different items aswell. Honest as always heyman.

I love fish and chips, but like other people i'm not buying it frequently. The cost is prohibitive. The good chippies are charging quite a bit for fish and chips now. I understand why, the cost of fish has gotten really expensive as well as the cost of energy, but it makes it more difficult for people to go to chippies so frequently. In the past fish and chips was cheap and delicious, but today it's no longer cheap. You also make a good point about variety, I work closely with a chain of local chippies and they're the most successful in Derby. They're called Zan Fish, hit them up if you're ever in the city. They like other chippies still have a very traditional menu. They've got some burgers etc, but it's all the frozen stuff. I think they could easily do smash burgers, spicy dipped chicken burgers from fresh chicken, even fresh fried chicken. I've joked around with them about servicing milkshakes too. I suppose there is probably a restriction based on kitchen space to consider too - but the more modern takeaway does has a wider menu so when families order, they can get a variety of food, as opposed to just one type of food.
