The point of prison was to dissuade and deter crime. The prisoners are supposed to serve their time, reflect on their actions, and leave with the belief that they will be welcomed back into society and hopefully become a more positive influence on it. Our system instead encourages a "you did something bad once, you will pay for it for the rest of your life." It's no wonder felons become repeat offenders - they literally don't have any options left to them if they don't want to die of starvation, cold, or intense heat.

@kacidy13 күн бұрын
That's supposedly the point. Every iota of data we have shows this isn't how it works. Nobody who commits a crime is doing the calculations like "if i commit x crime, y is the punishment. Is it worth it?" There are 2 reasons people commit crimes: they feel like they have no alternative because society has failed them, and thinking they will get away with it. Some degree of both reasons usually. The severity of the punishment is just not a factor with either of these so deterrence is a non-sequitur. The only effective way to handle corrections is to treat it as rehabilitation and the data supports this fact.

In Sweden, our prisoners train for specific trades etc and get employment (not always) in Sweden. Not perfect but close enough. These guys on the other hand, gets more work experience than any other want to be firefighter, working in conditions like these? They are hardworking, and it looks like the US needs more firefighters. So it really boggles my mind that they will get criminal records for the rest of their lives, not being able to WORK as a FIREFIGHTER. What is the point of all this? What is the point in going to jail if your life is going to suck when you come out? You will just go back to do the things you did before to earn money again. If you want to reduce criminality, GET PEOPLE JOBS! Good paying, secure jobs. Also, 100 something dollars a month. lol.

Håller med. Would still make it hard to find a job as a firefighter afterwards simply because of social stigma, and hard to explain away your multi year absence from working and sudden firefighter education even if you don’t have a public criminal record. But would be better than being branded a criminal for life after both serving time and serving your community to prove you deserve another chance at life.

I’m currently in a California fire academy and will try to get on with cal fire when I graduate. I’ve worked with many inmate firefighters and maybe I can weigh in on something. In order to become a firefighter you must first become an EMT so that’s the first hurdle. Someone with a felony conviction can become an EMT depending on the crime, how long ago it was committed and whether it’s expunged. There was an ex felon in my EMT class who served time in prison, so it is possible, albeit much more difficult. If you are approved to become a nationally registered EMT, it should be smooth sailing after that though. This would be your first and biggest hurdle to overcome as a ex felon getting into the fire service.
