I want to take an old ATX power supply and follow along for training. Thank you for the video and including the scope! I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but the scope should be isolated from the mains power and ground via an isolation transformer if possible or use care not to destroy the probe, scope, yourself, or all three! I'll watch this again when I get everything set up. LOVE the light bulb idea. I test every unknown device this way. I use a 1000 watt light bulb with motors with unknown large transformers. Great as always! 🙌

Can you cover the case where 5Vsb is present but the power supply main stage shuts down shortly after the green wire is connected to the black wire at the connector and the power supply used an output voltage monitor Ic to shutdown the power supply if the output voltages are too high or too low . It is difficult to trouble shoot because the power supply turns off the outputs very quickly after the power supply turns on , so it is not easy to see which output is causing the problem or if there is a fault with the voltage monitoring chip or circuit . Have you advice for this case ?

I hope I don't get taken the wrong way. I mean this in a good way. There is short (as in short circuit or a short person, etc.) And then there is chard which is a type of beet, a vegetable. Short rhymes with sport, abort, distort, etc. Chard rhymes with hard, card, etc. Say "short circuit" and "chard circuit" and see which one is the one you mean. Just being helpful here. You are a wonderful human being and I know you won't take this the wrong way. I have a hard time saying "h". I say "itch". It is not. It is more like "ache" as in having a tooth-ache rhyms with rage, age, page and not "itch" as in scratching an itch. :-)

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it is accent, as i am pakistani national (mother language Punjabi, in schools Urdu, in Office English, and with friends Arabic) so it is big mixture like cocktail in life. you are absolutely right sir. as it is our routine, "this power supply is short", "this mosfet is short", "this transistor is short" because the life is much busy and we try to save time by saying "short" instead of "short circuit" actually the best suitable and perfect term is " *short circuit"* so i am sorry for that, i will try to use proper terms in future and please accept my best regards and special thanks

@9:40 minutes in... This series light bulb trick only works with 220V supply voltage ....am i correct?
@HaseebElectronics3 жыл бұрын
yes dear, it is 220 volt 100watt tungsten filament lamp it limits the current due to any failure in troubleshooting process
@drbsr19483 жыл бұрын
@@HaseebElectronics OK I understand, So when you have the bulb in series with the 220 volt supply and you apply a ground (simulating a fault), that puts full 220volts at the bulb, I assume what you were doing with the jumper since you only showed the red lead. I don't have a power supply with a 220v/110v switch so again this trouble shooting technique, series bulb protection, would only work with a 220 V supply at the supply side of the series bulb. We use 120/240 volt supply here in US. For PC,s and other small appliances 120V,and 240 V for A/C, Hot water heaters,Oven,Dryers. Typically , windings on secondary of transformers to house is center tapped, center tap to each outer leg is 120 V with 240 volt across outside legs, so if you have a 240v feed on one side of the series bulb and ground/neutral on the other side, that would only be 120volts across the bulb. I guess the typical transformers in Pakistan household feed are single phase one winding on secondary side? Maybe you could kindly draw a sketch including the transformer for electrical service from the utility and one could better understand how this works. Thanks

if you have made a short circuit between purple and black (+5v STBY) in normal cases it have no problem, just the power supply will fluctuate or turn off some models have 7805 regulator IC to give regulated 5 volt for SB so if there is 7805 (3 pin regulator looking like a transistor or mosfet) will damaged surely, try to replace it

Sir, I want to remind some atx computer power supply on the purple wire give 5 volt but green wire give 2.4 volt, some atx psu purple wire give 5 volt and green wire give 5 volt according to manufacturer, is this true ?
@HaseebElectronics3 жыл бұрын
yes dear, it is true, basically it depends on ATX supervisor IC. when is PSON pin is less than 0.8 volt approximately, it turns ON the power, the voltage value above than 0.8 volt is considered logic high, so this IC will stop switching on green wire if we find voltage above than 1 volt normally above 2.5 to 5 volts. it is logic high. so it is okay, if we find 2.5 volt or 5 volt because we have to connect green wire to ground to drop its voltage to ground potential, so that the ic will start powering ON

Salam M.Haseeb, i tried to troubleshoot a PSU that has no output. Thanks.

there is a current limiting resistor which is connected between purple and green wire, check that resistor in some power supplies, the atx supervisor ic provides voltage on green wire (which are provided by the atx supervisor ic, as TL494, SG6105, and if the ic is fail to provided regulated reference voltage , in that case you have to replace atx supervisor ic)

okay sir, if we have 5 volt but we don't have 3.3 volt and don't have 12 volt, what should we do? Where is the problem ???
@HaseebElectronics4 жыл бұрын
in this case the secondary power section is not turning on. most of time there is a supervisor IC that monitors the output section, when any output goes beyond its allowed limits, in that case the smps section remains off. in this case if we want to repair it, first of all disable its protection for 3.3 volt, 5 volt and 12 volt and turns on the PWM IC directly and after repairing reconnect protection network
