What's incredible is there is no genetic blueprint of how to arrange their body plan, it just spontaneously divided that way and it's amazing how it compromised so well. Almost perfectly. Almost like the body knew when to divide and when to share. Obviously hundreds of other cases go wrong and don't work out like this, but it's still amazing.
@lost4468yt3 күн бұрын
People think of genetics as some kind of blueprint. But in reality it's much more like a procedural generation algorithm (and has to be given how evolution works). Structures are built up on a bunch of different simple rules. There is even a case of two girls being conjoined at the head, and their brains are connected through an entirely new structure that runs between them. Data is transferred between them, e.g. even though they face different ways the other can often react to what the other one is seeing through their eyes. Hopefully when they're older they will be open to allowing scientists to study them (ethically of course), it could potentially tell us a lot about brain structure and even consciousness. Given their coordination is so good, I wonder if there's also cross-communication here, obviously much lower bandwidth, but still. There's definitely some funny wiring given the stomach thing.
@alexojideagu3 күн бұрын
@@lost4468yt Yes, but the fact a body can work around the algorithms and ADAPT spontaneously is what's amazing. There is no algorithm for wiring 2 brains together or 2 nervous or 2 digestive systems together, but it happens and can work. The fact it's even possible is incredible. Obviously countless times it goes wrong. So there is a lot of probability and luck involved.
@lost4468yt3 күн бұрын
@alexojideagu I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I'm saying that the way bodies are built is by stacking a bunch of simple rules together. Cases like this work as the rules are still in play and wire everything together with them. E.g. how are their circulatory systems wired? Well they could each release signaling chemicals, and then when in range the vein etc starts pushing new cells out in that direction. Normally this generates a system as we normally see, but in this case those simple rules would work to join up both systems. A similar thing applies with the CNS and PNS, except it seems like the stomachs got wired to the opposite, potentially because the simple rules directed them in that way. Think of it like Minecraft. The map isn't created by the developers like in most games, instead they created a bunch of different rules, and by doing that it can just generate countless maps. The developers never told the game explicitly how to connect each biome to each other type, the simple rules just automatically create a transition that works between any of them (and you could add a new biome and it would also just work and fit in). If you're interested in something more concrete, look up the Perlin noise algorithm and Voroni diagrams - these are both used in Minecraft's world generation and are good examples of significant complexity from simpleish rules (or other examples would be fractals, fluid dynamics, etc). This is also why you see evolution change species in a weird morphing type way. E.g. if we look at giraffes, it didn't explicitly come up with the design, it just adjusted the rules in the neck region to grow much more before stopping. Before maybe it would grow 5 units up for every 1 out, and now it might generate 30 units up for every 1 out.
@alexojideagu2 күн бұрын
@@lost4468yt Sure. Even in the 1990s there were videogames that could spontaneously create new maps or race tracks from a set of rules. But the Brain and Nervous system and Digestive systems are incredibly complex. So the rules that have emerged are beyond high level. We also don't fully understand how a brain remaps itself after injury either and turns one function into another with the same brain matter.

I’ve read several journals from medical professionals of the time, and I’m still unsettled by how little was understood and how little could be done for what we would now considered simple issues. This also means that the alive one would loose ability of controlling the other side of the body but I believe that with proper rehabilitation one could still be able to control the whole body nerves and possibly take over the body. The fact such a system is not only able to sustain itself, but also to thrive on essentially a 1 in 1,000,000 coinflip is insane. Conjoined twins often don't develop strong internal organs and thus a lot of them unfortunately die from complications. So it's amazing to see.. essentially a system split in two. One can only imagine how many invisible adaptions have been made within the body or brains to accommodate for such a miracle of... well I don't know what this is a miracle of. Glad to hear they're doing well. I hope somehow their existence helps us to better support other conjoined twins in the future.

I'm totally stunned and confused and in absolute awe. And I have countless questions in my mind. How do they coordinate the intake of food, for example? They have TWO stomachs, but ONE system of intestines and ONE blood circulation system. How is the feeling of hunger regulated? Does, what one of them eats, influence the appetite of the other one, with regard to nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates etc.? Do they have to consciously coordinate WHAT and WHEN they eat? Or: Which brain controls the shared body parts? Let's say, the bladder is filled - so BOTH of their nervous systems would inform BOTH of their brains about that fact and they BOTH would feel the need to go to the bathroom in the exact same moment? Or would they have to communicate about that? And what about sleep? Two brains and two nervous systems could entail two different sleeping patterns, right? And if one of them awakes or moves during the night - how does that effect the other one? And so on, and so on... I just have NO CLUE, what that situation might feel like, and how one could built a concept of identity under those circumstances. Where's the line between "I" and "you" and "we", "mine", "yours" and "ours"? They are truly a miracle of adaptability and I have huge respect for how they manage that unfathomable challenge!

@NightBazaar7 күн бұрын
@@haroldmccarty1333 There has been the thought that the living half could possibly be saved by a massive surgical procedure to remove only the parts of the deceased half. However, there's no guarantee of success. Also, the twins might not want to undergo such a procedure and prefer that if one dies, the other will die as well shortly after. At their current age, the psychological trauma of being separated would likely be profound.
@cookieblaze5547 күн бұрын
Well, if one dies, it would be like a brain dead. Due both share same circulation system, that means, the organs of the dead one nor are going to get necrotic neither stop working. Also the brain, even if it's dead, isn't going to get necrotic because of the nutrients and oxygen supplies from the circulation system. That means, if one dies (due a brain damage), 'her' body will still be alive and working since the other sister will be alive and sharing nutrients to the other's organs.
