I spent most of my childhood summer holidays in Hastings and St Leonards as my grandparents lived there...many a happy hour on the beach....the fun fair looks a lot smaller than in the 70s and 80s...and I didn't see the crazy golf, which would be roughly where the ferris wheel is now...the underground area just past the pier used to be a swimming pool, then ice rink. I haven't been back for about 25 years, was very run down and shabby looking then, good to see the place has had some money spent on it now. Thanks for memories!

Hastings, back to a place we’ve visited. A trip around the West Country on honeymoon and three years visiting Austria then our first born arrived and two years later the shock of twins. This led to flats in Filey and Lytham St Annes but in 1987 when the three lads had got a bit older we ventured Darn Sarf, to stay in hotels, a couple of years in Cliftonville, Margate then Bournemouth, Eastbourne and Paignton in following years. In 1988 we visited Battle, and then on to Hastings, we parked near the tall black buildings and went up the cliff lift before walking to the pier, by this time it was dark, and we watched the rather underwhelming display of the Armada being defeated. As in most of you wonderful walks much has changed over the last forty odd years, the black net buildings were actually on the shingle beach then. Sorry for the life story, again, but your walks have the habit of stirring long lost memories.

Used to holiday in Hastings every weekend and major holiday back in the 80'2 and early 90's, Hastings was way better then. hate the look of it now. often loved to walk from St Leonards on sea down into hastings then back and over the cliff to Bexhill and back. hate the look of bexhill too going by that video - glad I have not been there in over 20 years.
@stephanieevans9413 жыл бұрын
As ex resident of Bexhill, I know Hastings/St Leonards equally well and it was interesting to see a few changes since I left, plus you mentioned some facts I didn't know! The best fish and chips I think, are to be found at Rock a Nore, plus there is a great pie and mash shop/restaurant there, which comes highly recommended. I remember the pier fire in 2010 very well, started by a couple of naughty local lads who were never prosecuted for it. I haven't checked all your Sussex vids, but two places I'd love to catch up with after many years, are Hove and Rottingdean. I lived in Hove (prior to Bexhill) and loved it. At same time, I worked in estate agents (for 13 years from 1974) in Rottingdean, so daily drove all along the coast road which took about 25 minutes (longer in summer!). Rottingdean has much history, plus very pretty, with a pond in village centre and a green. A pub called The Plough, situated right by pond, where I used to work some evenings. Village has connections with Kipling, Byrne Jones and Black Beauty! Another great place for a video tour would be Rye. I also lived there for some time, working as receptionist at the well known Mermaid Inn, where the infamous Hawkhurst smugglers gang hung out! It was destroyed by fire but rebuilt some years later. It is said to be haunted and staff were encouraged to promote those stories! Lots of guests would tell me, when checking out, they had seen or felt odd things during the night (oh er!!) There is also a secret staircase from one of the main bedrooms to the bar downstairs. Rye has lots of things to see and do and Camber is also nearby, with its sandy beach. Thank you for doing a great job! 😁
@GimbalWalkTV3 жыл бұрын

@@GimbalWalkTV that's brilliant, thanks so much! Oh, and if you are ever in Devon, I lived in Dawlish in the 80s, it's the town with red cliffs, and the trains run all along the coast, beautiful views.
