I bought some of those little hooks. Then I went to the craft store and bought several colors of grosgrain ribbon. Now I am looking for a way to make trad looking (with a bow) swappable hatbands for Western hats. Any suggestions?
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
Look at a bow, copy it, practice it like crazy.. it takes time to get it neat... make a band. Leave the ends hanging, don't sew them down. Then make the cross peice to connect the ends and to cover the seam. Make a bow afterwards.. use an iron, and a needle n thread.. make a few before u go for it.. practice. Has to be videos on it somewhere

Kevin, 1st off I think your videos are very helpful. I think I made a mistake? I inherited a few old hats from my father. One is a Fedora Hat by KNOX OF NEW YORK. It’s a touch small. So, while I was looking at the sweat band, I thought undoing the bow in the back of the leather sweat band would give me more room. How do I retie it back? Or do you have a video on how to do this. I wish there was some way to send you a photo. Thanks
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
Doug Harlow u need to sew it on with a stitch or two. and it’s no big deal, u can just leave it off, it just shows u where the back of the hat is.

Oh i see you say i should just replace it. Cool.

This is awesome. I installed one of those add on bands on a crushable hat. I just can't seem to get it to stay in place without the original band being exposed. Is there any harm in my removing the original??
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
No harm if you'll never use it, if u think you may want to wear it w that underneath band sometimes, keep it on, try double sided tape to keep it from riding up. Or yeah, just cut the underneath band off w a razor, 9-10 stitches,easy to do

I have an ancient cowboy hat, I picked up at *_Sabas,_*_ in Arizona_ about 40 years ago, that the leather sweat band has finally disintegrated, and fallen apart. Roughly, how much would it cost, to replace the leather sweat band, if I ship it to you?
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
I'm home now.not the work. I think a leather sweatband replacement is $40 plus $16.50 shipping.,it could be a couple more bucks to ship a western, . But u can call 800 622 1911 they will tell u. I'm home now & don't have the prices here.. , speak to Benji in mail order, or Van the hatmaker for details

Okay so i have a a beaver outback hat, hi dollar, that i bought in Australia about ten years ago. The sweat band is now wrinkled to the point where it doesn't fit.....how can i fix that?
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
Sounds dehydrated, that shouldn’t happen, I can guess it wasn’t being worn and it was in storage for a while? Just wearing it keeps it flat and supple, you will probably need to have it changed

Dude ! I didn't realize I could have bought that hat from you ! I bookmarked the site , Cool ! I've watched this vid before , but thought I'd check it out again , then thought , I wonder if Kevin has a Website , looked it up . Still Iffy , may go with a fedora , or Campdraft , next , but I've got a 6x Open Road Silverbelly Stetson . ... me and computers , and thinking about checking ... not good ... . Great variety , styles , brands , etc. !

Hi! I was wondering how to stop a ribbon from gapping when I put it on a hat
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
The right way is to stretch one side of the ribbon, it’s difficult to explain, but u can try setting the entire band and letting it dry, it might shrink to fit

Kevin i seen your video on installing a hatband by putting another hat band over the existing one. You anchored the new one to the old one using the small metal hook, but what if the hat doesnt have a already hatband to anchor it to.That's my issue the hat band i'm trying to put on has the small metal hooks like yours in your video.Any help would be great

Can you trim a 2 1/2 inch brim to 2 1/8 inch on a straw hat?
@rickcroucher4 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention it is a straw fedora “genuine shantung” on the stamp.
@KTGHATS4 жыл бұрын
U can, but we trim bring on felt only.. straws are tricky,u would need good,fresh straw,in good shape.. and it must have a ribbon bound edge after the job is done. So...no,we can do it,but just on felts.

Hi Kevin, wondering if you could help with a problem I have with a red felt fedora I have made by the Susquehanna Hat Co here in the UK. I have a very large head and the hat is a 62cm. It fits fine size wise but the problem seems to be that the crown is too round to fit my oblong shaped skull. The end result being is that I get the rippled bends in the brim around my ears when wearing it. Is it possible to have the brim reshaped to eliminate this problem?
@KTGHATS7 жыл бұрын
Matt Awbery hat must be stretched to be way larger..then reshape and fix the brim u can do this w just steam, but if u are in nyc i can fix it free if u are long oval,but a hat a size bigger then pad it down to size, or buy stiffer hats that won't flex so easily.

Where can I purchase the bands?
@KTGHATS3 жыл бұрын
Most bands are made from scratch from ribbon, custom, ready made ones like this don’t really exist , only what they call pug bands, that clip on, they’re ok for straws, or leather western bands, otherwise, u need to send the hat to us or any hatmaker,and get it custom made www.jjhatcenter.com

Kevin, how do I get sweat stains out of my creme fodera? It's not felt.
@KTGHATS9 жыл бұрын
You'll probably be unable to remove them. If you have stains around the hat band area, u can simple change th band, ten bucks. the new band covers up the stains, and acts as an absorbing material to wick away stains and keep the sweat away from the actual hat. That is the purpose of a hat band, the band absorbs the sweat,and you change it before it spreads further.. The band gets changed for $10 and the hats lives on The hat band is on the area where the head makes contact with the hat, it's usually dark and wide on a summer hat,to hide and cover stains. the idea is to change the band before the sweat gets to that point, prevention is all u can do Once it gets past the band and spreads beyond it, there isn't anything u can do. I'm usually up for a challenge, I'm the guy who says, " let me give it a shot" when everyone else says it's a lost cause.. But most likely you'll have to just accept the sweat stains, there are folks who chemically clean hats, These things have EPA regulations..proper ventilation,spray booth, u have to wear a mask etc Very few people do it, it isn't cheap, so if it's a $20 hat it may or may not be worth it to you. You can try calling Van Dyke Hatters in Brooklyn,NY And Optimo hat co in Chicago. They clean felt and straw hats, only You're looking at a nice bill though If the stains are not on the band,you're unable to really do much else.

yeah, there was a customer waving and knocking,trying to get my attn before the shop was open, I had to stop the vid short, I plan on making a part 2 and combining the two videos.. it's funny, u can see me stopping and looking over my shoulder in a LOT of these videos, often I try to come in early,before work hours, and close the gate and start filming..and EVERY TIME some dude will come up to the window,pointing at some hat,knocking on the window aggressively and mouthing,"HOW MUUUUCH IS THAAAT???" Over and over because he thinks I can't see him. I'd never get anything done, so I go on speaking,ignoring them.. and they sometimes get louder and louder,and this was an example of me just giving up...hitting pause.

I heard a man's hat should never touch his ears, you obviously disagree. What are you thoughts on it?
@KTGHATS5 жыл бұрын
TheOneWith TheRedTop right, it shouldn’t obstruct the ears, a classic fit is a little space between ear and hat, but if the hat just grazes the ear,barely touching, but not getting inThe way..that’s ok too, everyone likes a different fit, it’s subjective. The old men like it super tight to the point where there’s a big red line on their foreheads,they “don’t like it to blow away” is the stock answer.. younger, or more casual guys go oversized, many women go super,super oversized,wear it way down, over their ears..u can’t argue with these women, or old men and say, “you’re wearing it wrong” they know what they want in a fit, and I can tighten the super XXL hats up for the ladies who insist on taking the largest size for fashion.. but I accept that different folks have different ideas of a good fit, u can go bigger, and tighten up the hat for enough friction to stay on, when I go oversized, I tilt the hat severely to one side,tuck one ear in, one ear out..wear it at a slant, that solves the ear thing. But in general, the hat should clear the ear, or just barely touch it, that’s a modern,classic fit...like at least 75% of customers are in this zone.

So where are you located? I just bought a hat on ebay that has a worn sweatbant
@KTGHATS9 жыл бұрын
310 5th ave in NYC, JJ hat center. We are here since 1911 ! Oldest hat shop in NY www.jjhatcenter.com we can put a leather or ribbon sweatband, replacing those w new leather bands will almost always make the hat tighter, so if the hat is already in the tight side, consider putting in a ribbon sweatband, leather will generally reduce the fit by almost an entire size, keep that in mind.
