Just a different take on storing the battery. I have used shrink wrap tube from electrical applications, gently heat the ends…Easy to cut off when needed. Thanks Doc. (As an aside…I miss this back pages from Mechanics illustrated where they had ideas from every day folks.) this episode scratches that itch, a bit…

I’m a Gransfors Bruks fan, I own the large maul, American felling axe, small forest axe, and the Scandinavian forest axe. I also picked up an actual double bit with a five pound head that was for commercial use when they were producing axes for the logging industry, mine is from the sixties. It’s a beast to use.

I've had some field dressings alcohol wipes and duct tape, stuffed up the handle of my X7 held in place with a foam bung, for years,, Always handy to have first aid items handy, when using an axe,, imho..

There's a lot of dead space in those sheaths. You could easily add a ferro rod/striker, button compass, whistle, tinder, razor blade, maybe some type of sharpening element, sail needle wrapped with threat, snare wire, etc. and seal it with candle wax or something and still wrap paracord there. Then you could fit that lighter in the handle with a whirl pack, micropur mp1 tablets (or other individually sealed tablets) maybe some tin foil or a small fishing kit. Or you could leave the handle the way you have it and just add backups to the sheath. And a para cord loop so you can hang is from your belt in a pinch without having to threat it onto your belt.

I agree - a lot of those things could be incorporated or stored in the handle, freeing up space in the hatchet handle, which could also have a sharpening stone. Consider waterproofness re spare battery. Perhaps the most compact waterproof battery storage capsule is actually a 2nd flashlight?! Rather than a fixed blade knife inside the handle consider a Swiss Army Knife - with all the tools and features it provides?

If you've never taken a look at polymorph you really should. It's a low temperature thermoplastic in granular form that melts in boiling water and sets like nylon. You can mold it with yours hands even. Incredibly versatile. Cheers

What does the swinging and impact of using the hatchet do to the compass? Or the flashlight? Both seem like they could be affected by repeat hard impact, even in the handle.

Maybe a fish hook in the bag with the cotton fires starter. Possibly some small gauge wire as well.

Given the handle is open to the elements, the spare battery should probably be in its own heat-sealed bag. Also helps in case the battery leaks from age or impact damage. Is there room for any edge maintenance tools like a mini diamond file, steel or even quality wet-dry sand paper you could wrap around a flattened stick?

Best way to avoid battery leakage is just not to use alkaline. Lithium, as he's using here, don't have the same problem as alkaline.

For what ? According to their site, the N10, x5, xa2, and general purpose scissors are the only cutting tools they manufacture in Finland. Sweden ? Sure mora knives are a good value, but GB axes are overpriced overrated and underwhelming compared to American made axes from the heyday of the north American logging industry in the 1st half of the 20th century. Mass produced axes will never be better or even as good as they were back then. For axes made new today the GB axes are a good product, but a lot of people just don't know what their missing.
