I'm Sixty Five, I was taught by my father, and that goes back 10 generations. He told me there are 1000 or more ways of doing a job, and whatever you choose someone will tell you you're wrong. He also shut down the arguments about bonding by saying, There are only two bonds, 1/2 and 1/4 everything else is a Pattern! If it's structural, It looks good and the customers happy to pay you for the Job then she's a goodun!

I can see some logic in that but as you say we all have our opinions ✊

I started in 1960 and the bricklayers would move frames a couple of inches to make things work better. This became a no go as time went by.

Yeah work we do we can quite often move things with in reason as most of it bespoke frames etc etc

Also another reason why you are correct about flemish bond detail is the reason they like to keep same bond on each reveals is more often then not the reveal stretch , the header and closure would be formed in a different colour brick to form a feature, so this would then confirm your argument that the bricks either side of a reveal would need to be uniformed , for this detail to work . 👍 so a broken bond double header etc under or above openings doesn't matter as effectively you are forming a quarter bond anyway, which is what a flemish bond is. 👍

In a fair few cases yes but the blue headers were the bricks in centre of the kiln hence the glaze so to save waste they made a feature 😊

No hating here my friend 🙌 good Chanel, proper brickie / tradesman, problem.is these days kids taught to lay and pay , all about qtys not quality, my lad is being taught slowly but surely , a bit like yours , if hewants to go and be a site basher then he will be doing it away from me , I'm tough on my standards with him but he will thank me one day , when he is building the houses that most can't. 🙌 keep up the good work . 👍

Good video, you don’t need to look at many old houses to see that the reveals and the corners were the points of symmetry and the bond was either full or broken in between them. I think it’s not something which is taught because it doesn’t really work with stretcher bond if the spacing of the openings is awkward. (As in I think headers and 3 quarters jump out on stretcher bond) Also tighter perp joints than the beds always looks better (especially with imperials). Good to see this information out there and enjoy watching your videos but as for those types of comments you referred to… think that just comes with being online.

Thanks buddy, as I said I think I am just a bit naive 😂when you’re trying to do good it just seems ridiculous but that’s the world we live in I’m afraid won’t stop me 😂😂 when there are more people doing wrong than right that’s only gonna be passed on to the next generation 🙄

Looks good mate ignore the hate! Only thing I would of done different , which you still could do is on the very far left and right where the header should be but it looks like a 3/4 is in the middle make it header, closure, half closure half. Not telling you how to suck eggs but that’s what I would have done. But it does look tight to do it. Any way still looks tidy so what does it matter😂👍

I considered that but you would then have the appearance of English bond plus on the left the wall is out so to give a better appearance and not highlight the wall being out I kept a header against the wall so the brick in the middle diminished, so then for symmetry I did the same both sides and it has more of an appearance of Flemish but that my opinion as I said it’s a catch 22. I don’t think it’s wrong either way really and the haters don’t bother me but it just shows how our world is fucked

If i were to make an observation, what we see on the youtube bricklayer side of things is a mess. What have we got here...lads who cant go three videos without going on about their massive wages while saying how they only want lads who are learning because they dont know to expect to be paid what they are worth, lads who cant keep a workmate or apprentice for more than a month because nobody wants to work as hard as them apparantly, lads who make massive shows of being perfectionists while complaining non stop, lads who's persona is just being as loud and plastic as they can be with the most dead eyes in the world, lads who put on the persona of being ultra traditionalist with the flat caps and shirts, and you stepped into that bed that was already made. It was never going to be easy. Thing is they all know what they are doing, cant knock their work any one of them, and i wish them the best and watch their stuff on occasion to see if theres anything i can pick up 19 years later. God help me if i ever started a channel like yours cause id get eaten alive 😂 only last week i got chewed out for putting cavity socks in wrong, all the disgruntled sods would be coming at me having a field day at the newest upstart who thinks they know enough to be telling the world how to do it. So dont let it get to you, you're doing good stuff here showing a few ways to get through trickier stuff that isnt talked about much. Its refreshing. Id eat my trowel before believing that plemty of others dont think the same way. Its especially important to put out information on how to properly set out different bonds - all newbuilds are basic half bond and rare is even english garden used on sites. In the past year ive met three bricklayers who cant set that out right. So keep it up.
