Hate watching didn't cause Velma to get a season 2

Velma has been greenlit for season 2 despite all the backlash and multiple other projects being cancelled likely for tax write offs. It's very disappointing. HBO Max is trying to pretend that the show was successful but that claim doesn't hold up to scrutiny and many are claiming this was the result of hate watching. I respectfully disagree.

Seeing Velma get a second season isn't too surprising, but hate watching isn't the reason. A lot of times if a company is so confident in their material it'll get greenlit for a second season ahead of release.

I wouldn't have minded an adult oriented Scooby Doo animated series. The way they went about it though was amazingly disrespectful. I'm surprised WB's only demand was to take Scooby out of it. My demand would have been to not maliciously make fun of the source material and the audience. Not surprised that this has a season two. Like you said, these were likely ordered way before production was underway. It's like Netflix She-Ra. Despite criticism, it was always going to continue, because Netflix did a full series order before Season 1 premiered.

The idea hate watching is THAT powerful has always been kinda a ridiculous concept to me- like yes a lot of people hate watch teen dramas, but these shows also usually have teens watching unironically. Yes a lot of political shows have people bashing on it, but usually there’s people on the other side of the political spectrum who love it. To have something so universally hated get a million views is a ridiculous idea to me- hate watching has never been THAT big that it could make up an entire audience, even when it is a “main demographic” they have other demographics seeing it. Velma has no side demographic- it’s hate watchers and the rare breed that like Mindy Kaling’s humor. I very much doubt hate watching could save a show that much.

Season "renewals" like Velma's is pretty common for a lot of streaming exclusive shows. This is the same practice that Netflix used for Inside Job and The Cuphead Show! (two shows that are vastly superior to Velma, btw); order season one, arbitrarily cut it up, and market them as "seasons" to avoid paying animators living wages. By this point, I think the best approach is to pretend that Velma never released and stop giving it attention altogether, even when "season 2" comes out, and it becomes trendy to discuss it again. Warner Bros Discovery only cares about what shows and properties will give them the most profits in the short term. They're not gonna care about why a popular show is hated universially, just that a lot of people are talking about it, and that must mean that they want more like it.

There are quite a few problems with marketing through hate-watching. Ragebaiting your audiences might be an effective promotional tactic to drawing in curious viewers attracted by all the media backlash, but people generally tend to get tired of hate watching after a certain period of time and move on to works they actually enjoy. Not only that, shows need to hook in a consistent audience, not one off views, in order to survive in the long run. Productions for films and tv shows also usually takes years to complete. Personally, if I really didn't enjoy the franchise, I probably wouldn't have the patience to wait that long for their future content.

No, it definitely wasn't because of that, it was always going to be renewed. They know full-well that the view counts were only temporary, they weren't from it being "popular", and hate-watching never lasts; you can see that in the drop-off in ratings after the first couple of episodes when people got their morbid-curiosity-fix and moved on, therefore it makes no sense to base its future on that temporary spike. That they victim-blame viewers is pretty sick though. 😒

I think that people often look over when they try to say that hate watching is what gave the show a second season don't realize that the way Streaming and Broadcast television Determine a show success are vastly different. Unlike broadcast television a streaming show doesn't measure its success by the ratings. It does so by the amount of new subscribers they get fornpeople to watch the show since that is a new income for them. If a show gets no one watching it then it's not really a huge loss since they still have people subscribed to them and pretty much already paid for the show already so it's not really a net loss. This is how Kevin Smiths He-man show was able to get away with what it did with Kevin not taking any responsibility at all for his awful writing and receiving a part 2 to conclude the series instead of being cancelled

Just take the example of Netflix's Masters of Universe.. when the first half came out (which is basically S1), people "hate-watched" it and criticized it heavily online but let me ask how many people actually went back and watched the second half.. Hence, corporates would like to lie so that common people think it's true snd watch their show but in reality common folks dont care.. Disney has done that many many times and look where their financial stability is..

Like, I get it, make money, sure, but at least hire people who care about the properties they're using. Is that really too hard to ask for?

Tbh, might of thought this that hate watching didn't caused this. I don't like pointing fingers, but I do blame the CEO of Warner Bros David Zaslav. He is the one that allowed this show and canceled a bunch of good promising projects for this and he was the one that announced season 2. This goes to show that not everyone is ready to run a company for entertainment.

I've been very steadfast in the argument that actively talking about a subject is what gets these things continued, without chatter on the internet, they can't use things like 'parrot analytics' to argue it's a success, but I also understand why people need to talk about it, I have and others have and I agree it needs to be discussed as it's both disgusting and just SO bad on every front. I'd argue a leaflet campaign sent to HBO's CEO would be the best result, you've got nearly 33 thousand people here, others like Disparu have a 100k, others like ItsaGundam have nearly a million. Together that'll likely reach to about a million people, if people were willing to spend about 100 dollars worth of their own money to have it printed, sent and delivered all with the same line 'we hate Velma, stop making bad things' that might succeed but most don't want to do that.

@@michaelfireheart8300 that's why I said have it be uniform and 'stop making bad things' then it's harder to find threat in it. But you are right, they'd either find a way to call it racist or sue for threats to them. I guess the only real response is - while insulting these shows - we push good content out there that's focused on creativity and likely as much based on the internet with small projects.

I dunno'; I'm still certain SOMEONE in charge wanted basically everyone under the sun to hate it. How could it have been greenlit and released without anyone knowing it was going to key-off basically literally everyone? And on top of that, all those other projects they scrapped or cancelled? Yeah; SOMEONE knew exactly what would happen, basically scrapping everything else that was underperforming and hoping the backlash from this would be enough to boost their numbers. I dunno' if that plan actually worked, but I'm pretty sure that's what it was

Most of the people inside the industry don't care if people hate it in a sense they don't care if their DETRACTORS hate it. They only care about the fans they do have that like it. There is no conspiracy going on with this show. It was made by incompetent people who felt they had a golden statement on their hands and more than likely had an ironclad contract that would have prevented the show from getting trashed (that and it was probably already completed making NOT airing it as a tax write off a complete waste). Sometimes it is just as simple as a bad show getting the light to be made and that's it. It's happened before and as long as there are bad writers let in, it will continue to happen.

@@SuperCosmicMutantSquid Here's something to consider; Mindy Kaling has a well-documented liking of... 'men of the fairer skin', let's say, which basically always bleeds into works she's a part of; and yet in a show that's seemingly meant to be yet another of her self-insert projects; she later rejects the only white guy in favor of both the Asian redhead and later the black simp. I'm not a connoisseur of pretty much any of Kaling's works, so I can't say for certain if this is actually consistent, but it does seem very strange, to me

Eddy essentially sort of sneaking into a movie to watch Morbious was indeed better than the actual movie, Morbious, the movie of all time that Morbed its way into our cold Morbious hearts. But for real, animation takes time and 2nd seasons are sometimes already in the works for a lot of shows and this isn't new at all nor is it a 'Warner' thing. This was going on with Paramount (Nick) and Disney as well when they announced that Rise of the TMNT got a second season not even into the first season's 4th episode and Ducktakes got 'a second season' not into its FIRST EPISODE. The only outlier in this was the PPG reboot because it did get a 3rd season, the season a lot of people agree is the one you have to work for, but it was so badly recieved that it didn't get a proper season send off like the first two did and it tanked the whole series from there. The thing that is so annoying about these reactions is that a lot of the 'cartoon community' is the ones spreading it, which is ironic considering that people who claim to know so much about the industry keep going nuts over something that isn't a hidden secret to anything so their reaction comes off as performative hysteria. On top of that, most people DIDN'T watch Velma on HBO max since the whole series was up on, ahem, CERTAIN SITES, as soon as the episodes officially dropped. That's how a lot of hate-watching is done now considering that companies have made it way too easy to pirate these shows by dumping all the episodes (or a big chunk of them anyway) all at once instead of properly waiting back in 'the old days' making the catch-up process a lot slower but also in a way making the anticipation for the next episode a lot better. The whole binge model has messed up a lot of ratings for shows that could have potentially gotten a lot more popular than they were given a chance to but OH WELL. It works for reruns but new shows could use the help of having some time in between for people to gain some excitement and hope for the payoff. Regardless of that, Velam's low chart numbers may continue to fall even if there is a second season because people are more aware of where they can get 3rd party access of it so..... Yup. They dun played themselves.

If this wasn't the result of corporate meddling, that means this... is her view on the world. This is all just OK to her. Not the ultraviolence done for comedic effect, but saying popular teenagers are you know what who should die (Literally a quote from the show). I think she legitimately needs help. She's disturbed.

It's Masters of the Universe: Revelation all over again. They reveal "season 2" and expect us to get excited for things to get better, but they never will because it was written by the same hacks who wrote "season 1". This isn't the result of hate-watching and negative attention being "equivalent" to any attention at all. It's just corporate stupidity thinking this would be popular enough to greenlight a second season before everyone realized that the chicanery that Ms. Kaling was perpetrating wasn't worth their money.
@kdubbss0583
@kdubbss0583 Жыл бұрын
I do agree that hate watching didn’t cause a second season, as it was already greenlit. However, I do believe hate watching is a problem. Now, if you choose to watch and make content for it, that’s fine. I’m not knocking the hustle. But there is such a thing as “return upon investment”. For example, the people that scream to the high heavens they don’t like Disney remakes because they’re “soulless cash grabs”, are the same people who will send money to go see it. Those films cost somewhere around $250 to $275 million dollars to make, not to mention the cost for advertising, trailers, etc. to promote it. And these films end making a billion or so dollars. So because Disney is making money off it, they’re gonna continue to make them, when they don’t need to. Overall, I think there should be a happy medium.

I really hoped that they were doing a big joke where it was just Velma living through life and becoming how smart she was in the show but then at the end few episodes, she would join the main crew and the end would be her going on mysteries with the gang, a sort of fun school story of someone getting smart and maybe some side detective stuff but then at the end, the main plot comes with all the skills she has gained and the mystery crew start their adventure, a good take on the story BUT WHY DID THEY GO WITH THIS DUMB PLOT WHERE THEY HAD THE OTHER CAST MEMBERS ON SCREEN LONG ENOUGH TO RUIN THEM, I WOULD BE ALRIGHT IF THEY ONLY MADE VELMA MORE OF A JERK BECAUSE WE COULD HAVE THE OTHER CHARACTERS AT THE END OF THE SERIES BUT WHY RUIN THEM ALL EXCEPT OUR LORD SCOOBY DOO! there is a very small, naïve part of me that really hopes that the second season will be a redeem arc where instead of fake-realizing that she is trash, Velma will get an actual reality check, pointing out all of her mistakes and how toxic she is. Technically, i hoped that would be a plot point in the last episode of the first season, where all of her "friends" that she abused and manipulated turn away from her. But it's dumb. Why expect something like that from a show that uses a "rock thrown in to the window" as their device of pushing forward the plot. The dumbest and easiest ways of literally handing people the clues. The original show was for kids, with silly, simple and naive plots, and it was still better in giving us an ACTUAL detective story, with investigation and plot-twists, lordy loo.

I feel like there's no need for anyone to worry about season two. Why? Well, season one had zero redeeming qualities. Everyone hated it. And we all actively hated on it and ripped it to shreds because it was new. By the time season two comes out, the show is no longer going to be new. Most people are going to be bored of it, and will likely not even bother tuning in. Hell, some people will probably forget it was getting another season altogether until half the episodes have aired. Sure, there will still be people making review videos of the new episodes, but it won't be nearly as many, because there won't be much left to say. Velma proved it wasn't worth looking at twice. The show will be old news and people will stop caring about it. Which will likely lead to it not getting a third season. (I'm with you; it most likely only got a second season because it was already in production and you can't exactly cut that short without wasting oodles of money.) It will be nothing more than an embarrassing chapter in the Scooby Doo franchise, and then we'll all move onto the next adaptation. Hopefully, it'll be a better one. (Then again, the bar is very low when comparing it to Velma.)
