HBO Max's Velma is worse than anyone could have imagined.

Velma is a raunchy adult take on the classic Scooby-Doo characters. Just without Scooby, or any of the charm that made the franchise endure for so long. The humor is awful with an over reliance on self awareness that is somehow completely out of touch and they say b!tch like 40 times in one episode. Yeah, it's bad.

Neither were the protagonist, the single most important character, that's Scooby. The IP carries his name and it revolves around him; the others are major and main characters, but not the protagonist. Fred, Daphne, and Velma have been omitted entirely from multiple installments across the 80s. And that the network denied letting Mindy have Scooby for this shows how little faith there was in this project, they did not let be a real Scooby Doo product.

Simple, they cared less about the IP, and more about chasing trends. It's just another example of "immature adult cartoons", but with a pre-established IP stabled on to its flesh, and I say that because all references to Scooby-Doo is only skin deep.

I find it unbelievable how Velma went from being a detective comparable to Batman (in the crossover they had a long time ago) to in the end when she got a solo series she was in the hands of a person who turned her into the opposite of everything she had ever been. Am I the only one who’s guessing that Velma’s mom is the villain? I mean look at it, they’re constantly slapping us in the face that it’s her. Velma’s mom goes missing, her mom despises her daughter after she had basically ruined her life by being a terrible daughter, she’s the main focus of all her hallucinations, plus the killer is clearly trying too frame velma. Her mom would probably be the one trying to frame her daughter for these deaths cause velma ruined her life, targeting the high school students that velma hates too put the blame on her and ruin her life like velma did hers. Like it wouldn’t have been so obvious if they didn’t just slap it in the viewers face on the very first episode. Bet they’ll act all surprised when it turns out it’s her when this plot/story was so predictable

Also how an Asian ended up being a brunette? And being named Daphne? Sell drugs and morally okay with that? Daphne personality seems geared toward being a hoe, her name suggests it was not her real name but stage name or something, it just unnatural.

My favorite Scooby Doo thing ever will always be Zombie Island. The whole cast felt their most complete in that movie. They got along, didn’t follow stupid tropes, Daphne had a great personality and had her own show with Fred helping her, Velma was smart yet willing to believe in ghosts and such, and Shaggy and Scooby did their thing. It all just worked really well and the villains and atmosphere was a special highlight. This is downright pathetic. Thank you for reminding me these characters are 15 in this show. Now I’m even more disgusted by the constant sexualized nature of the female characters, and the downright hateful nature towards Fred what with violating his privacy, making him sheltered/dumb, constantly making reference too his body in a weird way and then being publicly humiliated and stripped naked in front of millions of reporters. AT 15. Wtf what these writers on? I have to go watch Zombie Island now.

I think what happened is Mindy Kaling presented her new animated “comedy” to HBO and they thought there is no way it could make any money, but they have to release it regardless. So, quite cleverly, they rebranded the show to tie in with Scooby-Doo so it already had a base audience, and all the controversy surrounding it would bring in even more viewers. Doesn’t sound like a great plan, but when you consider that Mindy’s show would have gotten only 1 viewer (Mindy herself), tying it to another IP was the only way to get anything from it.

Even if the characters stayed white and Norville was called Shaggy this still be an mean, shallow in-name-only show. Shows like Mike Tyson Mysteries showed there you can do "Adult Scooby Doo" successfully and that was also a show that happened to be pretty diverse too. Also, Be Cool Scooby Doo deserves an apology. The art style wasn't great but had clever writing thanks to writers from Phineas and Ferb and respected the original source material. They even had an episode about Fred concerned about "being a man" that had a good moral about asking for help and wasn't raging about "toxic masculinity."

I maintain that _Mystery Incorporated_ and _Be Cool_ are the two best incarnations of the franchise and for opposite reasons. _MI_ got fairly dark and told a story with an overarching mystery and high stakes. _BC_ was a lighthearted and really witty comedy with fun mysteries to boot. Both incarnations had fun characterization, and different characters received primary focus ( _MI_ shifted focus around to each of the characters but was primarily about Scooby; _BC_ was primarily about Fred and Velma). I don't think that _Velma_ is atrocious thus far, but it's definitely got a lot of conceptual problems, and it leans way too hard on the fourth wall. The only character I find likable so far is Norville; everyone else, especially Velma herself, is really mean-spirited. As this is an origin story, I can only hope they develop out of this tendency.

I've been waiting for a good adult Scooby Doo series ever since hearing the original concept for the live action movie. One that could lean into the stoner elements and the absurdity of the adventures they go on. Either a reboot or a psuedo sequel set years after the events of the original series. Either way man, this ain't it. This is just... Awful. It's not even a bad representation of the franchise, it actively and aggressively disrespects it. It's a shame.

Here are some of my personal fave Scooby Doo stuff. What's New Scooby Doo: captured the spirit of the original and was fun. Also the theme song is catchy as heck. Zombie Island: Popular for a reason. Good animation for direct to video, real monsters, and some "holy crap!" dark moments. And "Terror Time" is a banger. Witch's Ghost: Tim Curry as the villain and the Hex Girls. Enough said. Mystery Incorporated: Terrible Velma/Shaggy romance aside, very good series with an intriguing overarching plot and darker tone at points. Kiss: Rock N' Roll Mystery: This one is my guilty pleasure. I predicted who the bad guy was by a mile away, but this overall movie was just so crazy and strange I couldn't help but enjoy it. If I had a nickel for every time an animated special had Kiss revealed to be magical space protectors, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

In Scooby Doo the point was that despite them all being different the gang was actually quite close and respected each others differences and encouraged each other in what they were best at. And yeah there may have been a running gag of Daphne being a damsel in distress a lot but there were times where she was just as integral I. Figuring out the mystery. I'm so glad almost everyone in the internet is trashing this disgrace for a cartoon. This is just a typical modern day adult cartoon with constant swearing, gore, and nudity just to "seem mature". I guarantee you if Scooby Doo was in this show, they probably make him a real dog but once they take drugs, he's the classic Scooby Doo, pretty much saying the dog we all know and love is an acid trip.

I really just like the old classic Scooby-Doo show where the mystery of the week always had some logic to it. There was a reason Old Man Perkins was trying to scare everyone off with a fog machine, some fishing line and a projection of some ghost. I also have a soft spot for "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo!" I admit a good chunk of that is getting to hear Vincent Price. I think maybe 13 is an unlucky number for cartoons though. Pirates of Dark Water had 13 stones to go for and it too got canned before its time. That said, if you have to twist my arm to more modern Scooby shows, I have go go with Mystery Inc. It not only had the monster of the day plots, but an actual supernatural element as well. It also gave the characters an overarching plot and real character development. Scooby and Shaggy - who classically have been both dense and scared, wind up needing to have a backbone which becomes more than just the inspiration of a scooby snack. The relationship with Velma and Shaggy is also good, since Shaggy's terrified that him really committing to the relationship could alienate him and Scooby, and Velma's patience wearing thin. Though the "trap" jokes may not have aged particularly well, Freds' obsession with them also caused problems for him and Daphne. While the ending of the show was a bit rushed, the Scooby Team proved that they were best together as a team and eventually settled their interpersonal differences. That it had a proper ending is also a good thing.

Oh, J, thank you so much for enduring this torment. I knew this reboot was gonna suck, but I never imagined anyone would massacre these characters so thoroughly! I've watched the original run of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? an absurd number of times, I know these characters in their first incarnation like the back of my hand. I could write entire paragraphs on how badly mangled this show's 'interpretations' are, though for time's sake I'll only do one, but the thing I want to point out is that they're supposed to be nice. Seriously, the original Mystery Incorporated gang is the nicest bunch of teenagers you'd ever meet, every single one is a genuine sweetheart. It really hurts my heart to see them characterized as mean, spiteful, shallow, assholes. And as for Daphne, I have things to say! Far from the eye-candy damsel in distress media often likes to paint her as, the original Daphne is actually the team's primary investigator, and I can prove it! I went through all twenty-five episodes of the original series and tallied up every single instance of clue finding, and the final scores are: Fred with 14, Shaggy with 19, Velma with 20, and Scooby and Daphne both with 23. However, that's just the total clues found. I also counted which ones were found entirely by accident, and which ones were a result of observation and intentional searching. Our final scores then become: Shaggy with 7, Fred with 12, Scooby with 14, Velma with 18, and Daphne with 19. For the record, ten of Velma's came entirely from the eight episodes in Season 2. Daphne finds at least one clue in all but two episodes of the first season, but only in three episodes during the second. While she was flanderized out of the role early on, Daphne originally held the job of clue finder. She was the most observant member of the team, and the best at searching the environment. Even when she was captured by the monster, which happened to everyone at some point, she often came back with useful information, demonstrating that she stayed calm and competent even in harrowing situations. I could go on for a long time about Daphne, but my point is to illustrate that she was created initially to serve an important role. Daphne was never the show's weak link. On a more positive note, my favorite run of the show is the original, if I haven't already made that obvious. There's something special about the first time the characters were ever put to screen, before the franchise became so steeped in formula and archetypes. Sure, the animation is embarrassingly cheap, but the plots are actually less formulaic than much of what would come later. The painted backgrounds create a lovely atmosphere for spooking, and the monsters are iconic. Every single one of them has such a unique sound; some roar, some moan, some laugh, but the sound designers put a lot of work into making an impression with each. And the characters may only have one run cycle, but they put as much personality as they could into each of them. They did a lot with very little!

My friend suggested that Shaggy not THIS poser but the actually one of the rich one and him and the Original Daphne are family friends since they run in the same circles. And I could see that idea working well because I always thought they saw each other more as siblings since they did have that series without Freddy and Velma. I don't MIND Shaggy having a cute crush on the ORIGINAL Velma she was SWEET and smart...a little clumsy but kind. Having the idea of him going out of his way to learn all these things like in the classic show to impress her. While she could find him odd but a loyal...but both too shy or it takes them time to realize they genuine like each other. While Velma and Freddy on the other hand I feel like they are neighbors that stuck up a good friendship they have different taste but they don't mind each other. They all cared for each other...and scooby didn't feel like SHAGGY'S dog it felt like it was THEIR DOG. That dog loved them and that was his family. I remember an old Cartoon Network bumper, back when classic Scooby still aired in the nineties. The voice over was Fred complaining about how he and his friends are always called 'meddling kids', saying he was in his early twenties. Now in my thirties, I see the early twenties as still a kid and eighteen as a pretty arbitrary age to be considered an adult; there are plenty of actors in their twenties who can and do pass for their teenage characters. All that said, at least twenty-two is of legal age, so sexualization wouldn't be that bad. Just change the high-school to a collage, no harm, no foul.

3:10 that maybe it's only saving grace of Frank Welker voicing Fred's Dad in this Velma Series but it's Just NOT the same without him voicing Fred or Scooby-Doo

Probably the worst thing- I mean, everything is terrible, but one really basic thing that I really don't understand, is that Velma isn't actually smart at all? Like you said she doesn't ask any questions or look at clues. This is bizarre

How much do you want to bet that Velma's treatment of Norville is the reason he starts doing drugs and picks up the nickname of Shaggy?

This is why I tell people not to Hate Watch. This show is an utter disgrace to animation , to Scooby-Doo , to Hanna Barbera , to fans and to anyone with eyes and ears.

So... one thing I like about the trailers that serves as a very damning thing to Velma as presented in this show is that *SHE* claims that all of this, is *HER* story. Told from *HER* point of view, in *HER* way, as *SHE* sees it. So. It's entirely possible that everything we've seen, every terrible characterization, every extremely inappropriate sexualization of a minor, is *ALL* how *VELMA* interpreted the events going on. It's possible, in fact, that Shaggy 'Norville' isn't a simp willing to sell his organs to fuck her, that Daphne isn't a borderline-psychotic drug dealer slut, and that Fred isn't an insecure trainwreck -- this is just how *VELMA* sees *ALLLLL* of her friends, and of course, herself. It's like... that framing device was used as a way to turn this into a women's empowerment thing. But... nobody considered that by portraying all these characters in this way, and the story is being told from the POV of Velma, the portrayals of all these characters is how Velma sees them. Which means its VELMA marginalizing all these people and reducing them to these charactures. Our hero, ladies, gentlemen and anyone and everyone else.

I love how you said that the only thing this show has in common with Scooby doo is the clothing! The problem here, as far as I see it, is that they made a brand new show, and are just using the Scooby Doo IP to sell it.
