I'm not straight-edge, but vegan and bands like this I have so much respect for. Vocalise and apply passion to something that you have firm beliefs about. I'd like to be straight-edge one day, but where I live there is just no release from what builds up inside. Having a good scene locally would really help me, but the nearest small venue to where I live is an hour away. Having that energy and support in music like this is what brings people together and living 'out in the sticks' makes it hard to feel involved.

Maybe could've worded it differently...

I take meds for my OCD and anxiety and they keep me level but I'm straight edge in not smoking or drinking but some straight edgers include veganism and I'm by no means vegan. I dont take recreational drugs but I (while some will argue I dont have to) I have to take meds to keep less on edge because I acquired my OCD and anxiety through a rare neurological disorder. But he probably means shit live advil or tylenol. But even then who cares? Everyone has their own meaning of straight edge. Just like me.
@robertlanterman99833 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. It's immature and misguided. The pharmaceutical industry is an awful money grab profiting off of people's problems, but some people REALLY need pharmaceutical drugs to live or manage their lives due to mental and physical illness. The opioid crisis is awful and there are some really shitty doctors out there making a buck off dying kids, but having a platform like this and making such a blanket statement is pretty irresponsible in my opinion. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater might be a life/death situation for some people.

I can’t help but feel like he meant to say “recreational drugs”. I’m straight edge and take pharmaceutical drugs for anxiety and because I’m transgender. I’ve never heard anyone say this before. @@_mynewcareer - back in the 80s when hardcore bands started playing more shows in bars/large commercial venues, the owners of the establishments had to find a way not to sell drinks to underage people attending these shows. they settled on drawing an “X” on every kid at check-in. but this wasn’t associated with straight edge until bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and Project X popularized it, and so whenever you see somebody at a hardcore show today with an X on their hands, it means they’re straight edge

Started with Minor Threat. Ian, his brother et al. As below. They were playing shows and trying to promote all ages (rather than 21 years of age) as most music venues etc at the time. The ‘X’ was a clear signal of underage but went to symbolize more than just that. Think bands like SSD, Minor Threat, DYS, 7 seconds, Uniform Choice predated Project X and yeah The Bad Brains weren’t SXE.
