Being very specialised in a specific field doesn't make you any better in a quiz. General knowledge is a bit of an equaliser. Simon likely has a higher IQ than most quizzers from The Chase for example, but they'd perform much better than he would in a general knowledge quiz

I can't think of any Scot heroes that were Irish, but James Connolly was born in Scotland but played a big part in Irish workers movements and The 1916 Rising. St Patrick was from some part of Britain

Oh, I just finished reading the time machine the other week! He goes soooo far into the future it's ridiculous, and man, it got a bit intense, I couldn't stop thinking about that story after I finished it. It was very good though! Also, I'm so glad you all got Simon in to play with you, this was great! Some of these questions seem pretty obscure, so I wasn't completely sure he would win, but I was hoping, hehe, and he did it! @@wildbore_ It's The Time Machine by H.G. Wells Depending on what length of stories you like to read, it is a little long, it's about 11 chapters, but I really enjoyed it! It was one short story in a large collection of H.G. Wells short stories I bought, so I would say it's worth it, lol, but I think only you can determine if it really is worth your time or not, haha

My best guess is that he half-remembered that the Scots themselves came from Ireland. According to medieval codices, the Gaelic "Scotti" invaded northern Britain after the retreat of the Romans, and drove off the native Picts and Brythons. So, the term "Scotland" is of Irish origin, if nothing else.
