A katana could damage a wooden stick if it has a chance to make a clear cut on a stable and stationary bo like tameshigiri, but it's quite hard to chop it through like in movies, especially with good quality wood. As you can see in the techniques, there's not much chance for that kind of a clear cut anyway. Skall also did a video on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXfEXmadis2reZI A bo, with its speed and power can also really damage a katana if it hits it the right way, so the result of a clash between a wooden pole and metal sword could turn out quite different from what we see in movies and anime. Also, bo techniques can be used for defense while carrying a big stick, but they're often practised to be used with a spear or naginata.
