I think we're all sleeping on the actual message. I think it's nice that the song is painting buying stuff for yourself or others as an actual good thing, which it is. Idk where the idea that having nice things or buying stuff that makes you feel good be a bad thing. "Don't be afraid to invest in yourself" is probably my favorite phrase in this whole song. What's the point of working hard for your money if you can't reward yourself or others for earning it? I just think it's a positive message on treating yourself instead of fearing what others might think and by proxy not enjoying yourself.

MariMitty I agree, but I think some people are worried that this song promotes overspending and excessive consumerism. The chorus of “Buy, buy, buy” reminds me of late night infomercials that want you to buy their products immediately, and the chorus line “Wanna be beautiful, buy, buy, buy” might suggest to some people that the only way to be considered beautiful is to stay with the latest fashion. The song eventually does remind us to not overspend (“Not materialistic, no, no, no”), but it comes half way through the song, at which point most people have already made up their mind about what the song means.

MariMitty I think the real message is an attack on excessive consumerism conveyed through an ad that is so over the top in its “message” of “buy, buy, buy” that we, the listener, should pick up on the fact that this is not really what is being proposed. You might be more familiar with what I’m talking about in the context of politics when someone of one affiliation, pretending to be of another affiliation, tries to muster support for a cause that is so over the top radical/fanatical that the person thinks those opposed to their political views will come to their senses. Not to drone on about politics, but for example, faction A wants to crack down on abuse in old folks homes while faction B doesn’t. A member of faction B, pretending to be of faction A, proposes old folks homes should have assassins assigned to every nurse at the old folks home to make sure they haven’t abused anyone and they should be executed on the spot if they do. I think a bone is also thrown our way when the line about how tiring it is to be self-absorbed and how an A.I. picks out gifts for others, removing the thoughtfulness of gift giving and making it an impersonal, lazy affair. I also suspect this is an attack on Chinese culture, considering this song has references to Chinese rivers, and their consumerism. However, I don’t know enough about that to say for sure. At any rate, I don’t think the lyrics of the song are being presented in earnest.

Every time I watch this I can't help but notice how unique the motion capped Dancer's movement is. There are a lot of really small micro movements that come of so naturally and actually make it kind of hard to reproduce accurately. Like just look at the timing between the finger pointing and the shoulder shimmy during the chorus.

personally, I think the song is about a girl who has a passion for online shopping. it’s just her favorite thing to do. but since online shopping is something you do by yourself, she gets lonely, and then tries to buy a present for a person she cares about as well.
