"I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race." Oh, sweet heart. Damn that environment where someone feels that urge so strongly, anxiety and passion clutched, over such a subject. That cut my heart in just the way it probably needed to. She should have been treated with proper respect and kindness within her lifetime. To say "bless her", for me personally, just ... feels hollow. She's no longer with us, that precious consciousness that made up who she was is gone. Definitely an inspiration to treat others properly during that time that most matters; When they're alive to be influenced by one's kindness.

She was the only one in Gone With the Wind that was completely without flaws. This has always been my favorite movie. I loved it when she finally wore her red slip that Rhett gave her..I loved her so much in this movie. Every time she said a word or even gave one of her looks, it was definitely important. She seems to me to be one of those rare people who have a genuine heart and yet work miracles like winning an Oscar. Her speech is short but very touching to me. Rather than censoring films already made, we should take advantage of our chance of telling other, new stories never told before. Rather than erasing we should add ,so that the truth is told from different perspectives and history can be better disclosed in its complexity.
@do91382 жыл бұрын
I agree. The older works also give us an opportunity to discuss what was wrong with our thinking. GWTW is a great example, and Mammy makes that contribution. It is easy to say, "The wisest character in the novel was considered an inferior. Let's talk about how our doing that to real people by the thousands affected our culture." It's even better when we can add information about people like Ms. McDaniel and discuss her grace and dignity at the Oscars during an era when she could only sit way in the back in the corner because of her race. She wouldn't have been invited if she hadn't been nominated. Ms. McDaniel was a groundbreaking actress who opened the Oscars to POC as well as playing one of the most iconic roles in film.
@franci.f.2 жыл бұрын
@@do9138 "The wisest character in the novel was considered an inferior" . In the course of my life I have often been angry at this idea, which has a Christian basis (Christ is put on the cross by the Romans although he is God on Earth and asks the Father to forgive them because they do not know what they are doing) but can also be used to manipulate and convince people to suffer abuse. As the oldest daughter I was always told, tolerate what your sisters do to you because you are the wise one. It makes you angry to hear that and see it in a movie.

The wife of the dude who ran MGM was irritated that Olivia was acting that way and told her something along the lines of "Don't ruin this moment for Hattie by behaving like a child." @@do9138 Yea, agreed. Mammy is basically the architype for Oscar winning supporting roles. and without her or Pork or even Prissy, the movie would be a strange waste of time. One of my favorite little moment is when Pork is asking Scarlet about her financial situation because he over heard some talk about a $300 tax and Tara. Even Big Sam literally saves her life. @@TheRealDarrylStrawberry Yes, and I am so thankful for that. I have loved this movie since I was in fourth grade. As I matured, I grew concerned about liking it because it appears to support the racist Confederacy, so I watched it with careful attention to the African American actors, how wonderful they were, and how the entire plot would fall apart without them. When I learned McDaniel had won an Oscar, that made it a little better. I still hate the implication that slavery was ever acceptable. But I am glad that the movie helped make history for African American actors when McDaniel won an award she so richly earned. That isn't an entirely SAVING grace. But it helps mitigate the racism.

Secondly, when she's walking away, and wiping her eyes, she's holding the tissue in her right hand, then next screen she's walking off holding the tissue in her left hand, and her oscar in her right. If you watch other videos, you'll see she's already holding the oscar when she's giving her FAKE acceptance speech, yet the original shows her setting it down before she speaks. I'm so happy she won, I'm just disappointed in the way they treated her. It's a shame she had to re-enact her acceptance speech. My 2 cents.

I have researched this. They didn't do any close-ups on the night, so the stars went over to Warner a few days later, and re-enacted scenes from the Academy Awards.
