@JakobusVdL2 жыл бұрын
@@paulcarpenter885 you need to listen as well as react, "he was 58 when he lost his factory job" and that was 30 years before Thatcher's death. So he's not saying he was unemployed for 30 years, unless you expect people to work until their 90's? Government's (especially Thatchers) and employers are famously NOT keen to retrain or even employ people in their 50's. Large parts of the UK had unemployment rates over 20% in the early 1980's (higher for over 50's and under 25's) because industries were shut-down with no thought to how those jobs would be replaced - Thatcher simply didn't care. We can't know if Julian was lazy, but your opinions certainly are.

@@JakobusVdL It never says "he was 58 when he lost his factory job". He was quite clearly 58 at the time of recording in 2013, so he would've probably been 29 in 1984. Regardless of your political leaning, unless you have a disability, not having held any sort of job for 30 years likely indicates some level of laziness.

well to be fair to julian many of the places worse hit by thatcher's reforms still haven't recovered. I know where I live they haven't (reciently one shop opened with 4 positions available.... the cue for applications stretched the best part of a mile... and honestly I wish I was exaggerating but sadly i'm not) the mines were closed, there's only a hand full of factories, the next town over from where I live is practically a ghost town, what used to be a busy shopping centre now has a pub, 2 banks, and half a dozen shops, two of which have only been open for a couple of years. in the last 10 years I've had a hand full of one off jobs lasting a week or less, one job lasting 6 months, and spent the rest of the time doing volunteer work while looking for jobs until I decided to start my own business as there are no other options in the area
